needed insights for theologions and missionaries
This book is a great eye opener for those studying religion and missions. Everyone involved in (cross cultural) ministry needs to reflect on his or her own christian worldview and come to the understanding of the influence of western culture on western theology. This book is from an anthropological perspective well documented on folkreligion and from an evangelical theological perspective well balanced in dealing with the occult. In a curriculum for worldreligion this book is included in a christian bible college in the Netherlands, not only for missionstudents; all students in ministry need this subject on how religion from below affects the daily practises of people.

Connect with what people really believe!
Don't be misled by the title. Don't be tempted to think this is a book only for missionaries ministering in contexts of tribal societies or among Folk Catholics, Muslims etc. What this book deals with is a plethora of religious ideas and questions that you will confront in any society, urban, rural or tribal. It is concerned with the everyday problems and issues experienced or sensed by ordinary people in any culture, and how they answer them with their folk beliefs (within or outside the stream of organized religion) -- what the writers call the "middle zone" between the high level divine/supernatural realm and the material/tangible world.

The book looks at how Christians can address the questions people raise about this middle zone and it deals with four main areas: (1)What is the meaning of life, and how the living must contend with the problems of death; (2) The "good life" of health, prosperity, safety, welfare and progeny/descendents in the face of poverty, ill health, suffering, danger, disaster, infant mortality etc; (3) Concern for knowledge of the past, understanding of the present and insight into the future, in order to know how to live; and (4) Questions of morality, right and wrong.

I highly recommend this book. It is comprehensive in scope, theological as well as missiological, and above all it is practical and well illustrated with mini "case studies" and examples from the cultures the three authors are familiar with.

Make sure the Gospel answers THEIR Questions
Don't be misled by the title. Don't be tempted to think this is a book only for missionaries ministering in contexts of tribal societies or among folk religionists. What this book deals with is a plethora of religious ideas and questions that are commont in any society, whether urban, rural or tribal. It is concerned with the everyday problems and issues experienced or sensed by ordinary people in any culture, and how they answer them with their folk beliefs (within or outside the stream of organized religion). The book addresses what the writers call the "middle zone" between the high-level divine/supernatural realm and the material/tangible world.

The book looks at how Christians can address the nitty-gritty questions people raise about life and how they seek answers in this middle zone. It deals with four main areas: (1)What is the meaning of life, and how can the living contend with the problems of death; (2) We all desire it, but how can we assure the "good life" of health, prosperity, safety, welfare and progeny/descendents in the face of poverty, ill health, suffering, danger, disaster, infant mortality etc; (3) Everyone is concerned with their past, and wants to understand the present and gain insights into the future, in order to know how to live; and (4) We all have questions of morality, what is right and what is wrong.

Understanding Folk Religion gets to grips with these basic questions. It is comprehensive in scope, theological and missiological, but above all it is practical and well illustrated with mini "case studies" and examples from the cultures the three authors are familiar with in Melanesia, Asia, Africa and North America.

Not for the slacker!
This is a great method book that takes you from absolute beginners to moderately advanced levels. Great for someone who is really willing to put in the extra time and effort. A Rock in a weary land
This book takes you on a journey filled with the miracles of faith and power of prayer. You can feel each trial and tribulation in your heart. I have visited this church after reading this book and the warmth and love is all over the church. This pastor has endured much, in order to dedicate his life to his calling. I was inspired to reach out and believe me it was a rock for me as a child of Christ and I was able to dedicate myself to the cause of Christ. It is a must read for all, young and old. My children, and my childrens children will read this.

A story of faith, tribulations and victory
This book chronicles a Brooklyn church and its community amid the crime, drugs and despair of the black community. However , faith and learning to believe in the Lord and his ultimate plan for an individual and his community makes this church an oasis amid the storms. It is a story of a pastor, with his own demons, trying to be resopnsible for the souls of his congregation and the thin ice on which he must tread. This book will make you look at the inner city and its churches in a different light.

A powerful, challenging account of contemporary Christianity
This book was well written and well resourced and led me on a pilgrimage to this black Mecca.

Outstanding! Poker, sex, social snobbery, cynicism, revenge, redemption!! All you need for a great read and more. Lots more. I could read a book life this every day for the rest of my life

Almost as good as a trip
Just back from Venice, how I wish I had owned and studied this volume which re-tells the story of Venetian art and architecture, placing it securely within the development of other Italian art of the periods it covers. The reproductions are delicious and the analysis accessible to anyone who is interested enough to do a little digging. Well worth its price.

Invaluable for enriching a trip to Venice
Having spent a month painting in Venice and planning a return painting trip, I began reading Mr. Hills' book and quickly ran to get a note pad (and a dictionary). His evaluations of so many rich aspects of Venice, visually and historically, were illuminating, and his blending of these various fields into one another fantastic. Notes in hand, the return trip was magnificent, as was the city. The language can get a bit dense, but as I looked up unfamiliar words, they were the exact word for what was being described.

Venetian Colour, Marble, Mosaic, Painting and Glass 1250-
Extraordinary examination of color, space, the transparent, the luminous, form, shade, shadow and how these interact to form a work of art. As the author states: "Too often art historians write of pictorial space as though it replicated physical space whereas Renaissance painting at its most refined is a process whereby thought becomes incarnate in design: in doing so space becomes luminous, self-evident, revelatory."

War: Ends and Means

Authors: Paul Seabury and Angelo Codevilla

Primer
The authors refer to their book as a primer on war. It is the clearest, most useful book for those who nothing of war (or who only know things which are wrong)I have ever read. I recommended it, to no avail, to a committee of faith-based Social Justice and Peacemaking types. They, no doubt clinging to their useful errors, avoided the subject. The authors specifically refer to those who know little or nothing of war (most students these days)and they say the book is written for these folks.

One myth or old chestnut after another is analyzed and demolished. Their use of simple (and I emphasize "simple"--nothing complex) logic and historical examples known to almost all of us--nothing abstruse here--are brutal in the rapid and total destruction of some of the most commonly-accepted misunderstandings of war. For example, they discuss the Phoenix program of Viet Nam days. While acknowledging that it turned sour, they make plain what those involved knew. The Phoenix program worked, killing the cadres, the troublemakers, without killing scores or hundreds of unwilling conscripts and unlucky civilians. While being successful, it deprived the anti-war side of their masses of civilian casualties they needed to make their case. It was a two-fer. Thus, it had to be, as it was, demonized. They make frequent use of Aquinas and Augustine and the Just War Doctrine. It is not that we like war, Augustine said, but that our enemy's peace may be deadly to us. People may be murdered en masse, as we see in this century, without being in war, and fighting to avoid that is certainly moral. This book suffers from one disadvantage: Those who need it most may feel themselves superior to its message.

The best war primer known to modern man
Angelo Codevilla introduced me to the worlds of war in the late 1980's and later to intelligence in the ealry 1990's, leading partly to my career.

This book is what a modern Clauswhitz would write. Speaking in plain english on diverse subjects, he collects the type of thinking necessary to war in one book. I give this book (which is hard to find, but I managed) to every student of modern affairs.

It is hard to find the correct praise to lavish on this book without gushing. It is simply the best book of a primer on war that exists anywhere. More than introducing the student to war, it introduces him to thinking in war's pragmatic thought patterns- to the necessity that war demands.

Better, Codevilla uses his talent in context of historical necessity, drawing carefully from a bevy of beautifully chosen historical people and sitations.

You can do no better on the subject. Start thinking about war with War.

Uniquely insightful analysis of human and political aspects
I suspect that this book may suffered from the fact that it was published in '89, as so many things changed quickly after publication. The author's do a good job of discussing technical aspects of weapons and military operations, but this book's real strength is its discussion of reasons states go to war, how and why populations fight, political aspects of war, etc. I have read dozens of books on war, each good in its own way, but this book fills a badly needed niche in understanding the overall human and political dimesion to war. Having worked as a defense analyst for many years, I know that Americans suffer badly from the notion that war is a simple contest between competing technologies, and that too little thought has been given to the simple question, "why people fight?" This book is the best I have seen in addressing this question. The author's approach is not overly psychological or philosophical, much of it is "uncommon" common sense richly supported by a wealth of obscure but important historical information. This book must be read by people who want to understand what war is about. Period.

Warwick--The man and the image
A very balanced biography of this enigmatic figure. It presents his intense energy and desire for good government, but also as an extremely ambitious, proud man who allowed himself to be caught in the web of the great Spider King, Louis XI of France. I wish Kendall had not included his periodic flights of fancy (imaginary dialogue, going into the mind of a man long dead), but this is a highly readable and detailed book.

Good History, not the Tutor propoganda
As one of the two best biographies of Richard Neville, 16th Earl of Warwick, this book enables one to understand the complexities. He was not the "Last of the Barons" - especially since he was an earl ;-), as Shakespeare made him out, but rather a betrayed and fair person who did not want power, but rather good government. The book brings out the trials of a man betrayed and finally defeated, but his ideals lived on. A Warwick! A Warwick!

Gripping Drama
Excellent reading which you won't want to put down. Traces the life of THE KINGMAKER as he is buffeted by the winds of fortune, endlessly rising and falling until meeting his death at Barnet Field. Will make you feel Warwick's surging energy as he carries the fortunes of the White Rose on his back. His self contemplation before the Battle of Barnet is powerful stuff.

Closed this book and fell on my knees in prayer!
John Paul's words moved me, touched me, and inspired me to live closer to Christ. A man so filled with God's spirit is impossible to ignore and John Paul clearly shows us the way to spiritual intimacy and peace. An extraordinary little book!

Easy Comprehension
The book is a written record of a conversational presentation of two retreats John Paul II gave 10 years apart before he became pope. Unlike formal books, it is easy to understand and very relevant to our times and very useful. It gives a flavor of theologically where he is coming from.

Retreats for University Students
This is a wonderful book. It is unclear from the title, but the content of the book came as retreats for University students in Poland given by John Paul II when he was bishop (and cardinal) in Cracow. The talks are so down to earth and personal. I love theology also, but the simple message to everyday students really touches the heart more profoundly. A particular strong point is the two short chapters given to female, then male students. The way John Paul II upholds the dignity of women is amazing. The way he tells young men from scripture that our problems are summed up as: "male arrogance, scant willingness to give, and the spirit of conquest," shows how he hits home in a concrete way. He also addresses abortion and the man's role in abortion with no compromise. The whole book is hard hitting and direct.

it is the first book talking about Content Management.
It is more for Unix/Perl systems, but the ideas behind are great..

Fantastic for people with little time.
I've been bashing my head against a wall with learning Perl, and this book is the first that I've had any luck getting anything to work.

Paul's a great author and walks you through the steps fairly well.

The cool thing is, is that all the programs he offers in the book work together and will make you a pretty comprehensive site for a lot less headache than static pages and search and replace!

The best out there! No better on this subject!
As intermediate-level user, I found this book to be the bridge which could carry me to expert. This easy to read "toolbox" is a great investment in any web-designers future.

a friend recommended this book after having a workshop with the author. the whole concept of behavior problems that can be helped by retraining the ear is amazing. i was fascinated by the physiology of the ear and the fact that the ear brings energy to the brain, not just sounds. i am recommending this book to several friends, one of whom is a special ed teacher.

Help for desparate parents
The personal story of the author, his very troubled youth, and the man who helped him overcome his severe problems - Alfred Tomatis. After overcoming his difficulties the author started treatimg others with the same method. In a nutshell: the Tomatis Method relies on the ear and it's function (listening) to treat conditions as different as Autism, Hyperactivity, singing, reading and writing problems and many more. This is a facinating book for it combines a very moving personal story with a VERY CLEAR presentation of the method. Any parent with a child diagnosed as hyperactive or the like should read the book. Any person who is interested in a very unique and original approach to the way our body functions shouldn't miss this one. And actually it is a must-read for all teachers.
