Troubleshooting HPLC Systems: A Bench Manual, by Sadek
I thought that this was an excellent book. It provided lots of the practical kind of details that I was looking for. This book is great for someone who has either limited or no experience in HPLC. It would also work as a refresher, for someone who has been out of the field for some time.

Definitely the best Revere biography to date
In "A True Republican," Triber successfully transforms the larger than life Revere of legend into a living and breathing American. This book is both readable and detailed, utilizing an ocean of facts to flesh out Revere's life while proving a central thesis.

According to Triber, Revere epitomizes the development of republicanism in postcolonial America. What does this mean, you ask? Revere believed in the "American Dream," and tried to create a country in which individuals could achieve economic and social prosperity, and even political office, as long as they possessed the qualities of virtue, merit, and ambition. If this sounds trite to you, please realize that it was a novel concept in Colonial America, a land of hierarchy and inflexible social classes.

Revere's life as a silversmith, patriot, and would-be merchant illustrate his devotion to republicanism. The son of an immigrant, he had to depend upon his own skill and drive in order to succeed, but he possessed these traits in abundance. His life took many twists and turns, and he failed to achieve many of his goals, but at the end of his life he was a successful businessman and patriarch of a huge and fairly prominent family.

One quibble: I wish the book had focused a bit more on the last 20 or so years of his life. Many of Revere's later technological achievements are covered in less than thorough detail, unlike the earlier chapters. No book can cover every angle of a subject, of course, but I personally disagree with this aspect of Triber's emphasis.

Whether you want a great biography, a study of early American social mobility, or just a great read, please give "A True Republican" a try!

Trying Out the Dream: A Year in the Life of an American Family

Try Out Trying Out The Dream
This book is a time capsule: a portrait of a family mired in 70's suburbia. I must have read this book 5 or 6 times when it first came out. The family portrayed is drawn with great clarity and sensativity. I've always surmised that they lived on Long Island in New York State but the real location of their home and their names are never revealed. Its really "Anywhere, USA" and the author's narrative is knowing and compasionate but never intrusive. All those great themes thrown in the forefront of American culture by the social activisim of the 60's make very real and sometimes bittersweet appearances. I only wish that Wilkes would write a sequal. I've always wondered what happened to the 3 kids in the family.

Tupolev - The Man and His Aircraft: The Man and His Aircraft
Published in Hardcover by Society of Automotive Engineers (December, 1996)
Authors: Andrei Kandalov and Paul Duffy
Amazon base price: $29.95
Average review score:

An excellent book on Tupolev Aircraft.
If ever there was an excellent book on Soviet aircraft to emerge from the post cold war era, this is the one. Not only do the authors have a lot of knowledge on these impressive aircraft, but also a collection of photos never before published of many little-known aircraft. Some of these aircraft are truly impressive such as massive bombers from the pre-war period to the Strategic Bombers fielded by the former Soviet Union. Tupolev is also the constructor of most of Russia's commercial jets and the book is therefore useful for anyone interested in civil aviation. there are also tables giving the production levels of most Tupolev aircraft and also others indicating the registration numbers of Tupolev airliners. But most of all it describes the personality and contributions to aerospace of Andrei N.Tupolev, one of the world's greatest aircraft designers, who dominated his country's aircraft industry for much of this century.

Turkish Archery and the Composite Bow
Published in Hardcover by Buckingham Mint (June, 1994)
Author: Paul E. Klopsteg
Amazon base price: $45.00
Average review score:

The classical book on Turkish archery
First, this book consists of two sections, one about Turkish archery, by Klopsteg, and another "Modern Methods in Archery".
For me the second part is not worth the book, it is just curious, not very informative, so I'll skip my comments and concentrate on the part about Turkish archery.
It makes a complete overview on the different aspects of Turkish archery, it is not a "how to" book, if you want a how to, better to try Thomas Douvernay's video about Korean Archery or Jeff Schmidt video about Asiatic composite bows. The second can be ordered at Amazon, and both are available at Three Rivers Archery.
There are different chapters describing bows, arrows, the strings, performances, and also a "recent addenda" that is more helpful to who is willing to build his own bow.
It is the best book about the most fascinating bow. If you're lucky enough to get a copy, go for it!

Dick B.'s Most Ambitious and Comprehensive Historical Work
I've watched Dick work with alcoholics, bring people to Christ, study the Word of God, and teach the 12 Steps and Big Book in their historical context. I've also seen and personally helped him gather many of his research materials, particularly those from James and Eleanor Newton. This monumental work, not the last or the latest or even the last to come, is still his finest and most comprehensive history of A.A.'s biblical roots. There is nothing like it, and it is very helpful to Christians looking at, into, or out of Alcoholics Anonymous and toward the Bible

A FABULOUS story encouraging verbal expression.
I'm an elementary speech-language specialist and I use this book every year. I am picky in the books I choose to use in therapy, but this story allows for critical thinking, retelling, inferring, predicting..all the things that look for in interactive literature. Kids root for the turtle and love the "villian" characteristics in the monkey! Highly recommended. I have so much fun reading it that my kids can't help but catch the excitement! They all ran to the librarian begging to check out a copy!
