Cynical
Here Keith Ewing and Connor Gearty have gone for the tactics of cynicism producing a title with no substance or relevant critical analysis. This has the effect of making the book little more than a talking shop for bitter old hacks like Keith and Connor.

I Hate Cornell: 303 Reasons Why You Should, Too
Published in Paperback by Crane Hill Publishers (January, 1997)
Author: Paul Finebaum
Amazon base price: $5.95

What?
Geez ... I can understand hating Harvard or Yale or even Penn, but Cornell? It's the un-Ivy Ivy. Every year more intelligent, caring, and patriotic people graduate from Cornell than all of the other Ivy League schools combined.

Paul should be kissing this fine institution's..., not denigrating it. It's truly sad to see such un-Americanism - especially in these times.

This Book is Horrible!!
This book doesn't even deserve 1 star!! It is the worst book that I've ever read, and is completely false in it's statements. Everyone knows that UNC is the best! Obviously, Mr. Finebaum is clueless and should stop writing books on subjects he knows nothing about!

A ROOT CANAL WOULD BE MORE HUMOROUS.
Complete drivel. His puerile "humor" lacks both class and imagination. Most of the "jokes" don't even pertain to anything specific about Princeton, rather they are rehashes of old put-downs with Princeton references inserted to add a semblance of relevance. In a number of cases Finebaum does not even bother to maintain that facade of pertinence (what does Don Imus have to do with Princeton?!?).

I expect that his other entries in this ill-conceived (and then published) "I Hate" series are as equally lacking in taste and comedy. Caveat emptor: a ride on the subway affords more entertainment than this offal (and would be cheaper). The most disappointing thing is the realization that I will never get those 10 minutes of my life back. Save your time AND your money.

I Hate Texas Tech: 303 Reasons Why You Should, Too

This book should be banned!
This book unfairly portrays the true Texas Tech. This author has a chip on his shoulder and should belittle this fine institution. One should blame himself for his own academic short comings, not the institution that tried to teach him.

Why I Hate Paul Finebaum
This book is yet another example of Finebaum's dry, tactless attempt at levity. This is book is but one in a series of formulaic, unfunny commentary (I won't use the term humor since none of the books in the series are at all humorous) books that propitiate baseless stereotypes about colleges around the country.

What a Waste
A friend of mine bought this for me prior to attending a USC-WSU football game. I wish he would've bought me a program or even an overpriced beer. The "author," if you can call him that, is making way too much money from these "I Hate" books. Save your money.

Icelandic Essays: Explorations in the Anthropology of Modern Life
Published in Paperback by Rudi Publishing (October, 1997)
Authors: E. Paul Durrenberger and Shirley Crisler
Amazon base price: $12.95
Used price: $6.00
Average review score:

Modern Icelandic society for the non-academic reader
Paul Durrenberger is a US-based anthropologist who has made modern Iceland the focus of his academic research. This book is not a scholarly treatise, but rather a first-hand narrative about the author's experiences as he tries to learn the Icelandic language while working on a farm and insert himself into day-to-day Icelandic life. Although it's not exactly a page-turner, since modern Icelandic life isn't all that exciting or weird, this would be excellent reading for someone planning on visiting Iceland, who wants to go beyond the hackneyed tourist sites and learn something about the people. The book's fatal drawback is Durrenberger's insistance on inserting his left-wing opinions about US politics at every opportunity; he doesn't seem to realize that people are buying the book to learn about Iceland, not to get a lecture about US politics.

In the Days of Paul: The Social World and Teaching of the Apostle
Published in Paperback by Paulist Press (January, 1992)
Author: Anthony J. Tambasco
Amazon base price: $6.95
Used price: $4.17
Average review score:

Awful
Tambasco is a name-caller. Everyone who isn't theologically liberal in an extreme fashion Tambasco refers to as a "fundamentalist". While I refer here partly to his lectures, his book reflects this bent. Tambasco often engages in pseudo-intellectual bullying. It is his common method. And what is this about Paul not believing in Jesus' sin-erasing sacrifice? In the context of the entire New Testament -- my goodness -- this is not scholarship, but intential obstinacy, methinks.
