At least they're not cookie cutter
Short stories suffer from being a little too experimental without being too justified. But considering the stylistic dangers, the high pretension quotient and all that, the stuff is pretty fun. But how many stories set among the firing neurons of Shakespeare's head can be written? I swear I've seen a lot of this stuff before or after, elsewhere, by different people.

Uncomfortable to think about, but needs to be talked about
The subject of physically abusing one's family has been secreted away throughout the history of mankind for many reasons, none the least of which is that men, who are by far most commonly the batterers, also "run the show" in society. Mr. Kivel addresses this dilemma in a straightforward, no-holds-barred (excuse the term) manner, and presents ways for men to unite AND work with women to educate men about what drives them to violence and abuse, and what to do about it. Mr. Kivel's qualifications to speak on the matter are unique, and while "Unlearning Violence" can be dry and a little clinical at times, it is thought-provoking and insightful.

Hard Latin
I am a sophmore in high school and in Latin III. For one unit we work out of this book. It is very easy to follow, but Latin is a tough language to translate. i would recomend it for latin scholars or people who knwo latin very well.

You had better be a fan
This is a great book if you are a fan. It provides lots of information that you can't really find anywhere else (i.e. the timeline). this book suffers however when it comes to the game. there is not a great deal of substance to the character development process. Not enough species, skills, occupations or statistical ablities. If you have no knowledge of the comic book Usagi Yojimbo, you should avoid this game. It is not for the serious roleplayer, however, with a little bit of help and a lot imagination this fairly simple game can be a blast.

Some are YUCK! but others are YUMMmm!
I got this book when my son was about 8 months old. He may not be typical, but by 9 months old he insisted on feeding himself rather than eat things offered on a spoon. The recipes in the 8-18 month chapter of this book are mostly soft, spoon-offered dishes which didn't get past his lips too often.

HOWEVER, the 18 month and beyond chapter is a real winner. Some of these dishes are so tasty I've served them to guests!

Damning with faint praise...
To say that the most intriguing aspect of Paul West's novels are the titles might be damning with faint praise. But the titles are great - "Bela Lugosi's White Christmas", "Lord Byron's Doctor", and, of course, "The Very Rich Hours of Count Von Stauffenberg". These all do what a title ought - tease you into interest. What about Lord Byron's doctor? And why the doctor and not Lord Byron? I think of Bing and white, not Bela and white.

Knowing that Von Stauffenberg was the man who carried the bomb into the meeting to try to assassinate Adolf Hitler, I was drawn to this book by the title. So it was not only the title, but also the subject matter. West chooses interesting subjects. The bomb plot to kill Hitler, the Jack the Ripper murders, Lord Byron (who, according to Caroline Lamb, was mad, bad and dangerous to know).

So, drawn by the subject matter, intrigued by the title (what was it that made Von Stauffenberg's hours rich?), I picked up the book. LOVED the cover.

I find it hard to describe Paul West's style. The closest I can come is to say it is a densely written book. There are a lot of words, and not all the words carry one forward into the tale. Indeed, in some instances one feels like one has stepped into a small eddy of words and only after whirlling about a bit does one spin out of the eddy and move on to the next. When not half way through the book I recognized we were coming upon the moment of Von Stauffenberg's demise, and given that the narrator of the book was Von Stauffenberg himself, I was curious to see how West was going to approach the second half of the book. I underestimated the man. The death of the narrator did not phase him for one moment. Nor did it cause a change in the voice of the book. Goodness. I hadn't expect that.

I have also read The Women Of Whitechapel - drawn again by subject, title and cover. But I give. As curious as I am about Bela and his white Christmas, about Lord Byron and his doctor, I'm gonna give it a pass

Designed for a specific level.
This book was extremely successful in reviewing subject matter for daily life. This includes travel, restaurant etiquette, personal relationships, and French literature. On the other hand, it does not give a very comprehensive review of grammar. Its presentation of the subjunctive was especially lacking due to its brevity. This book is most fit for more advanced students who have a handle on the basics, but need help in focusing on interaction with the world.

Okay biography
In this biography of the leading theologian of the social gospel, Minus does a good job of tracing Rauschenbusch's history and family. Less covered though, and something I felt was important to understanding the man, was coverage of his political and social beliefs - these are touched upon, but aren't the subject of much study. Minus also tends to overlook flaws of Rauschenbusch, preferring an overly praising view of the man. I have not read other biographies of Rauschenbusch, so this may be the best. If so, it is well worth reading, regardless of its flaws, as this is a man certainly worthy of study.

GOOD, BUT NOT AT ALL EXTENSIVE
I would have to say, having been a sannyasin myself for the past 2 years, that this is a pretty good book on OSHO and his teachings. Written from an initiates stand point, this is a deeply heartfealt journey into the Master-Disciple relationship. Although I enjoyed this alot, I wouldn't say that it is extensive...however, how can you put into words that which is beyond all form. If you are new to Rajneesh, or not, either way...this book is worth it!!!
