Entiendes?: Queer Readings, Hispanic Writings (Series Q)

mediocre book about a potentially great subject
This anthology looks at "queer" themes in Spanish-language and Latino cultural productions. Unfortunately, like many gay Hispanic books, there is too much focus on tedious Spanish materials and too little focus on the cool stuff that gay and lesbian Latino artists are currently doing. I prefered Munoz' "Disidentifications" and Manrique's "Imminent Maricones" much more than this. However, this is one of the first gay Hispanic anthologies, so I must give it some credit for its originality.

ok, but...
i think that the guide that came with my book, which shows pictures of the slides that professors are supposed to use was completely usless, if you have to purchase this book for a class, try and get a used copy. It is not worth the price you have to pay. There is another book by Breyli and Meyers titles Corporate Finance which is much more comprehensive and much better.

An older military handbook with a new cover.
I like to be fair and open minded but I don't feel that this book is that practical for the average reader. There is good information here but I have seen this book at military uniform stores for years and I just don't feel that it is that "readable". For the price you can get it at on Amazon.Com it is worth it but there are technical aspects of this book that the average reader will not be able to do without hands on instruction in my opinion. Photos are OK, font and writing style are below average. Would I want to this manual in the bush with me? Yes...but personally I wouldn't expect it to be the "tell all-how to" handbook on using knives.

When your world becomes strange
Survivalists are not crazy and not necessarily paranoid. (Viz.) There's martial law, the bad guys have poisoned the water supply and your neighbor is stalking your belongings. However unlikely, this nation is not immune to what history teaches can happen anywhere

Here is a book that involves other people and not just you against the world. This author introduces you to hard times when interdependence takes on new meaning. He talks about pre-establishing a team. Each individual has a necessary talent to contribute to group survival. Everyone understands the necessity to pull together in tough times. It's quite good actually.

Prepare by becoming incrementally self reliant in advance of a crisis. It just makes sense, even if you live in earthquake country. Who and what equipment will you need? Where to go, how to find your way around, eat like an aborigine, shoot like Earp and defend yourself and property. What about morale and sanity? By preparing far enough in advance, you'll have accummulated the staples needed immediately then later you can augment supplies off the land or by barter.

It's all practical information given interesting slants based upon the author's having lived the experiences he is teaching. For more serious consideration you need to complete the knowlege base by buying his other books which he references. In my experience each of his books has merit. His military use of acronyms as memory aids is an effective tool for committing information into memory.

I found myself becoming aware of a world, albeit again unlikely, in which I could suddenly find myself. Survival afterall has a bomb shelter morality.

I'm uncertain I'd choose to continue in an instinct driven world but I could do so more certainly thanks in measure to Don. Don preaches survival as an ultimate goal. He's not extremist. He's a reasonable thinking man discussing the practicalities of a less than pleasant subject, one which exists in the gray area of possibilities.

Faith in History: Armenians Rebuilding Community (Smithsonian Series in Ethnographic Inquiry)

A remarkable accomplishment
Academic prose can often be boring, but anthropology usually has some at least some interest; if the author can't write, at least the people he studies might be interesting. This author's accomplishment is therefore remarkable: writing an anthro study with no insight and no interest.

The subject is an important one: what happens in a diaspora of a diaspora? Armenian refugees in Cyprus become Cypriot-Armenian refugees in London. All the more reason to demand a thoughtful and insightful treatment.

Faith, Obedience & Perseverance: Aspects of Paul's Letter to the Romans (Wissunt Zum Neuen Testament)
Published in Hardcover by Delft Univ Pr (December, 1994)
Author: Don Garlington
Amazon base price: $69.12
Average review score:

Nice effort, but highly un-Protestant
This is a highly exegetical work by D. B. Garlington on the themes of faith, obedience, and perseverance in Paul's letter to the Romans. Though it is very exegetical many of those who are still loyal to the fundamental teachings of the Reformation will consider this work...hmm...unorthodox. Garlington has serious issues with the way typical Lutheran and Reformed exegetes have always understood Paul's view of the law and its relationship to the believer's salvation. In fact, Garlington has this distate for the Reformation view that Christ's obedience is imputed to the believing sinner in a forensic manner (he, instead, opts for "union with Christ" and confuses justification with sanctification--a very serious error). He argues (on page 1) that only the "doers of the law" will be justified at the last day. He argues this based on the idea that Paul borrowed the idea of judgment according to works from his past religious background--Judaism. Unfortunately, according to Garlington, the believer is justified not because of Christ's complete obedience to the law, but because of our incomplete obedience to it (of course, Garlington immediately states that our obedience to the law is God-given). Garlington also equates "faith" with "obedience" and thinks that holding to Christ for salvation is also holding to the law in obedience for salvation. Garlington's interpretation of OT law passages are also disturbing (like Lev. 18:5). Contrary to most (if not all) Reformed exegetes he states that Lev. 18:5 is possible to fulfill for salvation (since it only deals with covenantal loyalty, and not perfection) and cannot be seen as a passage to lead us to despair. This also relates to how he sees Adam as our representative head. In fact, Garlington does not see Adam imputing his guilt to his offspring, but that non-believers merely don't have the Spirit of God within them (hence, non-believers are merely weak and spiritually deprived, not thoroughly depraved and corrupt). This work should cause concern for many in the Reformed tradition. Garlington's creative exegesis of the passages may bring fans to those who like to overturn the Reformation (Roman Catholics and professing Protestants), but one should realize that the Gospel is not something to tamper with. Considering that there are many heresy trials and investigations going on within many Reformed congregations today this book should be read by all ministers in Reformed congregations to a good idea of what the "other side" believes about justification. Garlington (like many today) likes to call apples "oranges" and oranges "apples". Fortunately, this book will alert the Reformed community on the dangers of teaching a different view of justification taught by the Reformers.

Cover is misleading
I was browsing the interior decoration section and came across this book. Misled by the cover, I bought it. It is a coffee table book that shows lots of palaces, mostly exteriors. Not a lot of domestic interior photos, and what there are would not interest someone searching for an interior decoration book.

stay away
I really hate to say it , but this book is just not worth 1/20th of any other major respiratory care book (for example Egan's fundamentals of RC or Dean Hess et al, RC: principles and practice) I feel bad saying it since I know how much hard work it takes to get a book to be printed. The whole design, bad fonts, cheap paper, and organization of the book is really bad. You could gather 2 or 3 chapters that are decent, but we all know that for the book to be successful it must have at least 3/4 of its material acceptable to read and enjoy. I doubt this book will make it into 2nd ed.

Neat little book
This sturdy book contains six precut stencils in a medieval theme. The pages are durable and easy to remove, and there are lots of uses for them. I used them to make more pieces for my feltboard, and sometimes I'll color them onto my windows with dry-erase markers (Instant stained glass!) The designs included are a fantastic gargoyle, a crossbowman, a great dragon, a castle, a knight on horseback, and a jester with juggling balls.
