Paraguay Under Stroessner
Published in Textbook Binding by Univ of North Carolina Pr (December, 1980)
Author: Paul H. Lewis

Average review score:

The Only Book On Stroessner
Paul Lewis wrote this book in 1980, almost a decade before Stroessner was overthrown after 35 years of rule, the longest in the Western Hemisphere and fourth longest in the world. Lewis devotes a large portion of the book to the history of Paraguay, which is fascinating, and he also explains the politics in Paraguay and how dictatorships have ruled the country almost since independence, continuing on to an explanation as to how Gen. Alfredo Stroessner took over in 1954, and has held power through 1980. Paul Lewis also writes about the transformation of the Paraguayan economy, and how surprisingly there was economic improvement due to the conservative policies of Stroessner, and heavy foreign aid. He also explains Paraguayan culture, and why the country is still heavily isolated from the rest of the world.

This is the only book to explain Stroessner's Paraguay in detail. It is unfortunate, because Stroessner is still one of the few major world leaders without a biography. I would like to see Professor Lewis do a follow up on his fine book, perhaps a full biography of the man who shaped Paraguay for over three decades. Nevertheless, Paraguay Under Stroessner is a excellent and exhaustively researched book, and should be on the bookshelf of anyone interested in Paraguayan history.

Part Way to Utah : the Forgotten Mormons

Learn how to witness to the Reorganized LDS
Paul Trask beautifully fills the void of Christian apologetics materials available on the Reorganized Latter Day Saints. He covers RLDS history, helps you understand their thinking, and helps you focus on beliefs relevant to RLDS, rather than on LDS beliefs. (Many Christians may not even realize the Reorganized church, also called "Community of Christ," exists.)

Trask has excellent analyses of RLDS scriptures, RLDS Zionism, and the RLDS priesthoods from the Christian perspective. He gives helpful, realistic guidance in winning RLDS members to Christ. This is an indispensable aid to Christian witnessing in this specialized area!

A Life-giving Consideration of the Trinity
This is a well-written and insightful consideration of a doctrine that is difficult but supremely important. The book's primary virtue is that it shows the value of the trinity by developing the doctrine in light of real life. It is a valuable contribution to the best recent thought on the subject, but it is accessible and helpful even to a theological novice as myself.

Fiddes mines the riches of Christian theology from the Capadocian fathers of the patristic east to classical Western theology from Augustine and Aquinas to modern thinkers as diverse as Jurgen Moltmann and John Zizioulas. With grace and care, he takes the best from the breadth of trinitarian thought and presses still further. He is especially conscious of Biblical texts, which he interprets with acumen and respect. In general, he is sensitive to the Christian community even as he urges it onward.

Through the course of the book, Fiddes deals with some of the most difficult tensions of real life and Christian theology. He has chapters on living in community, dealing with destructive authority, the point of prayer, the problem of suffering, the practice of forgiveness, death, spiritual gifts, and the nature of sacrament. He illuminates each of these profound problems through his model of the trinity as a dynamic community of relationship in which we may participate through the gracious love of the Father who draws us through the Son and in the Spirit. With insightful sensitivity and amazing grace, Fiddes shows how the trinity provides practical help, both as a symbol through which we may learn and as an actual, personal presence in our lives.

Where much philosophy and theology has little contact with life, Participating in God attempts to say something that will actually enrich real lives. It is rigorous and erudite, but it is also practical and accessible. Since it is cogent and daring, it is essential reading for anyone interested in the contemporary dialogue on the trinity; since it touches on all major aspects of Christian faith (including soteriology, Christology, and ecclesiology), it could serve as a compelling consideration of Christianity, both to the non-Christian and to the Christian wishing deeper immersion in their faith. To anyone interested in Christianity and willing to learn a little more, this book offers very, very much.

Fast moving,facinating,absorbing,comforting.
Reminds us that we are spiritual beings having a relatively brief human experience before returning to our real & eternal home. Reinforces that spirituality is truely present in everyone and transcends all earthly religions. Many wonderful stories throughout the book to support the love and freedom that our beloved deceased have found. Death will kill the body but not the soul. We can grieve the ugliness of earthly disease and death, but we cannot grieve about the love present in the hereafter. EN
