The book is aimed at children in 4th - 8th grades; however, I've received mail from readers between the ages of 5 and 15. The book contains many experiments that can be done at home--with items commonly found around the house. Each experiment is preceeded by a short mystery story to entice the reader to perform the experiment, because the experiment solves the mystery!

Readable and reassuring

Kropp has real-life advice for parents who believe, as he does, that reading is one of life's great joys. He emphasizes the importance of building a literate household--where fiction, nonfiction, magazines, and newspapers abound--and everyone reads. While you can't pick up a mainstream parenting magazine without seeing an article on the importance of reading to your baby, Kropp deals with keeping your child out of reading slumps throughout school and with or without the support of an 'A' school and teacher to lead the way.

It's a quick read (ironically) and a great resource for parents.

Very informative in helping parents over "rough" times

I liked and used many of the author's ideas on how to raise a child who loves to read. In particular, the suggestion to keep reading to a child who does not want to read on his own was a very good idea. Definitely a worthwhile book to add to the library.

FrontPage 2002 - A Fine Book

Sam's How to Use FrontPage 2002 is an easy-to-use guidebook to the latest version of FrontPage. I upgraded from FrontPage 98 and found the 2002 version much easier to use. Many of the oddball features of the 98 version have been eliminated. 2002 is a much simpler program to use.

This book uses many illustrations in color to show you what to do. These are well laid out and the text is simply and effectively written. I found the index quite adequate although I supplemented it myself with several items that I thought I might require again in the future.

The only time I didn't follow the recommendations given by the authors was in dealing with images. I find it often easier to copy the images from scanners and other sites and to move them, also, by copying and pasting rather than by some of the methods suggested.

Highly recommended.

Short, Sweet and to the Point

A concise yet sufficiently detailed guide to using FrontPage 2002, this book is a gem. It's well organized and chock full of helpful hints and how-to's. Perfect for beginners, it's also a visual tour de force. I was able to create and publish a surprisinly decent website for my office in less than a week. Overall, a very impressive work!

Witty and heartwarming

This book is beautifully written & illustrated. Every child with a sibling will identify with this book--and so will their parents! It sends a great message, too. Best of all, "Hugs and Kisses" shows profound wit and characterization that's lacking in many modern kids' books.

On the run from the Soviets

This book, first published seventy years ago, is a harrowing account of the author's escape from the Soviet Cheka shortly after the Russian Revolution. He was the leader of a group of rebels in Turkestan, and as such was a much sought after prize for the Bolsheviks, who wanted to eliminate him and all other opponents of their regime. The story is told in such a low-key way, however, that often it becomes a mere travelogue rather than a tale of action. For all of that, the underlying terror comes through, and the danger and hardship which the author faced appears very real to the reader. In addition to the main story, this book is also full of geography, geology, zoology, botany and history. The author was certainly a well-rounded individual, in addition to being very, very brave. We don't see many heroes such as this man in our times, and it's rewarding to read that such people were more than wiling to risk everything to combat tyranny.

An amazingly good read

It is the story of a White Russian who was worked against the Bolshevik's during the Russian revolution. It provides chilling insight into the reign of terror but also fascinating information on life in Central Asia during the 1920's. Highly recommended

Inspirational

As a true Alabamian, and a die-hard Crimson Tide fan, this was a must have. That being said, if you are anyone who has to teach, show, guide, anyone else in anything. this book will be useful. If you want to get more from yourself than you currently think possible, these quotes will help.

Finally--Bear's quotes all together

you don't have to be a sports fan to love this book. The quotes are inspiring. If you're looking for a motivational book, this is it.

A celebration of theater, echoes of Barrymore...

This is a witty, rakish, stylish tribute to all actors in general, and Barrymore in particular. It's a wonderful play for a local theater group (I say that from experience). If you're an aspiring playwright, this is one you'll wish you had written. Rudnick's "Notes on Production" are very informative.

Be ready for a challenge, actors: "Dying is easy. Comedy is hard."

Hilarious!

The author's introduction is almost as funny as the play itself. Required reading for anyone about to attempt acting Hamlet! (for essential comic relief, if nothing else)

Read this book if you want to be a mathematician

I found this book to be a highly interesting biography of a good mathematician and great writer. I say good, because Paul Halmos denies the claim of being a great mathematician in the sense of Paul Cohen or Irving Kaplansky. Rather he says that he is a "professional" mathematician, and this book describes his professional life. But it does it in such a personal way that one cannot help but find it fascinating. I feel that this book not only influenced the way that I think about mathematics, but even the way that I think about life.

Wonderful look at mathematics, the times & the author

A Fantastic Book -- this 400+ page manuscript nicely mixes mathematical science with a historical view of the development (1930's through early 1980's) of mathematical research in the United States. This book is highly readable, extremely enjoyable and quite straightforward with details and opinions. One gets a first hand insight into how the author approached his research, his career, and his life. Halmos has always been a brilliant and skillful writer but his contributions have mostly been in the technical arena; this time he has provided a volume we can all enjoy. I found it difficult to put this book down once I began its reading.
