A short story that will leave you thinking for a long time.
If you're a fly fisherman this is a must read. A masterfully written tale, light, hummorous, and thoroughly thought provoking. A great gift for the fly fisherman and or fly tier you know.

Excellent study of the man and his work.
It is a commonplace observation that the Great War changed Western culture fundamentally and ineradicably, lending to formerly respectable sentiments like Horace's "Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori" an indelible bitterness.
Sassoon, one of the most prominent figures among Great War writers, produced a influential body of poetry and memoirs which are accessible and worthwhile today, yet the man himself is largely unknown, partly due to his own reticence. Moeyes, a Sassoon expert, in this admirably readable work traces the elusive writer's life and career with examples of his poetry and prose, examines his relationships with contemporary literary figures, and places his work in the context of Georgian poetry.
Highly recommended for students of English literature in general, and Great War writing in particular.

The long-awaited sequel was worth the wait
Those operaphiles who know Jackson's first volume, "Saturday Afternoons at the Old Met", have been waiting a number of years for this sequel. The format and style remain the same. One problem faced by Jackson in the sequel was the sheer magnitude of his task. In the earlier book many of the Metropolitan Opera broadcasts between 1931 (they began Christmas Day 1931) and 1950 were not preserved. Virtually all of the broadcasts (and then some) between 1950 and 1966, the years covered by this book, are preserved. Naturally, Jackson notes the highlights, those afternoons that live in the memories of those who heard them, but he also fairly notes those that, for whatever reason, fell short of the Gold Standard. He also shows the slow decline of the Met that began when true operatic giants like Bjoerling, Melchior, Flagstad, Bodanzky, and so forth left either no replacements or the replacements were in the hand (or, rather, throats) of a select few, such as Richard Tucker who upheld the standard for many years before his death. Mr Jackson not only provides an excellent narrative but also an appendix listing broadcast dates and casts. Highly recommended. The only sour note comes from the Metropolitan Opera itself whose Brownshirts work to prevent the legitimate sale of these out-of-copyright treasures except those that the Met sells at outrageous prices. Recordings of these are available in Europe and are well worth the effort to read Jackson's words and hear the actual performance.

This book contains the anwers to all my questions about life
This book has recently be translated into Dutch; title: "Stilte van het hart". I am amazed about the fact that it appears to answer all the important questions about life I have--even the ones I wasn't fully aware of until now. It may be especially helpful for people who feel confused about matters of religion or faith, but also for people who chose a spiritual path and are satisfied with their choice--just to enlighten things that are not yet fully clear to them. (As a student of A Course In Miracles, I am among the latter.)

The best resource you can find about raising a deaf child
This is a PHENOMINAL resource for any parent who has just discovered that their child is deaf and doesn't know where to turn. Paul Ogden does a wonderful job of introducing the many options that are available for raising deaf children, as well as helping parents to deal with the emotional aspect of having a child that is deaf.
The Silent Garden is a must read for parents of deaf children as well as for those who work in Deaf education, counseling or in any related field of study.

incredible fun
The Silent Miaow, Translated from the Feline and Edited by Paul W. Gallico.

It's just exactly as fun as it sounds. The author writes about how he "found" the manuscript, then translated it. The book itself is a first-person "how-to" book from the perspective of a cat.

There are chapters like "Tidbits at the Table" (go for the man first, then everyone will give in), "Take Over" and "Doors" (if you learn to open them, never let on, or they'll stop waiting on you). Some of it's a bit much, such as the way to butter up men. (And the "Food" chapter is positively Machivellian.)

Since it's all in good fun (and occasionally quite sweet), I enjoy this kind of thing. There is some actual facts, but they never get in the way of the flavor: pure fun.

Lots of black and white photos complete this funny jaunt. This book would be enjoyed even by people who believe cats _are_ controlling like this.

Excellent book!
Gives a well-written and concise treatment of developments in an area of topology that has seen considerable progress in the past 50 years. The only other general expository books in this area are more than 20 years old. This is particularly important because the book unifies many seemingly disparate results and approaches. Even classic constructions (like the Hurewicz homomorphism) are give modern (and very concise) interpretations. I strongly recommend this book to students and researchers in algebraic topology.
