Powerfully Lyrical Poems...
Many of the poems in this book are (by nature of their topic) full of feeling to the point where any gay man will be brought to tears. Monette's poems have powerful imagery and a lyrical quality like that of dreams and nightmares.

The "Elegies for Rog" were written during the death and dying of Monette's partner during his bout with AIDS and will serve as comfort and empowerment to anyone in the face of despair.

After having fallen in love with Monette's poetry, I later came across his autobiography, "Becoming a Man : Half a Life Story." It brings out topics prevalent in homosexuality and coming of age which are too often supressed by the mistakenly common 'gay lifestyle.'

As a poet, I highly recommend both of these books.

It is a spectacular compilation of his work....
I adore his homes, and this book gives you the complete layout, including the floorplan---something I love in architecture books. If you can't visit the homes in person, this is the next best thing.

Fascinating!
If you, like me, flip right to the end of Harper's each month, then this book is for you.

Full of fascinating statistics (ratio of Japan's robot populatyion to that of the US's is 4:1), this stuff's not only illuminating, but it will also help you out when you make speeches for instance. Or have a paper to write.

Or do you just want to be entertained? Here are a few gems:
Did you know that R-rated movies have more violence than X-rated?
Did you know that the Soviet Union had 100 times more movie theaters than the US in 1990? (Geez, I can't imagine how bad their films must have been though!)

Helpful followup to "What Did They Mean By That?"
In this follow-up to the popular book, "What Did They Mean By That?: A Dictionary of Historical Terms for Genealogists", author Paul Drake has defined 1500 or so new expressions from the past. Like its predecessor, this book is a valuable tool and a desirable addition to the library of any family researcher.

Easy enough for my 3-year-old to understand!
I checked this book out from the library, and now I have to buy it because my son keeps asking for the "hamburger book". It has lots of pictures for the little ones to understand and both simple and complex wording for kids in different language learning stages. My son is so proud that he can say "epiglotis" and tell you what it is! This book certainly answers the question "where does poop come from?" in a child-friendly way.

Existential Literary Theory
I would recommend "What is Literature?" to anyone interested in literature, philosophy, and existentialism. Sartre explores why we read, why writers write, and the situation of the writer after WWII. Also included are several essays, one on Les Temps Modernes, and another on African Disporia literature. Particularly interesting is how Sartre traces the situation of the writer for the last four hundred years and his theories of writing as "praxis".
