Important book, impressive author on Canadian issues.
Maybe Canada isn't perfect after all. Palango shows some of my Country's warts but I am still glad to live here. He is a superlative investigative reporter and writer and it shows in this important work. Canada is a better Country for having him, and others like him, keep an eye on complex and often hidden issues.

Before travel became tourism...
Time was when travel was as memorable an adventure as a stunning love affair, a divorce, a personal catastrophe. That time was between the wars -- the Great War and WW2 -- and no group of observers was better positioned to write of it than the great British travel commentators. You will think differently about the activity and meaning of travel after you read this captivating, if occasionally slow-going book by one of the finest observers of the 20th century at work today. And not least of all ABROAD takes you back into the world of T. E. Lawrence's time, when ships were the only way to cross the seas.

An extraordinary collection
This book should be on the desk of every policymaker ! As a deacon in the Roman Catholic Church I would also hope that deacons, animators of justice and peace in the local Church, would read and ponder this difficult and complex problem. After 20 years of my own study of the problem of war and peace in the nuclear age, with the end of the Cold War, there seemed to have emerged more questions than answers for myself and others.

This collection of essays gives the reader insight into the multilayered complexity of what to do with nuclear weapons, how useful are they, and what can we do to get rid of them in the future. I was impressed by the depth of the essays from each of the contributors, even when I disagreed with some of the assumptions or conclusions. This book forces one to wrestle with the unfinished agenda of human survival and thrival. As a Christian theologian, the ethical argument opposing nuclear weapons forces one to grapple with the complexity of this issue as an act of love. It is a struggle directed to understanding this seemingly unsolvable problem and the possibilities for living in a more just and peaceful world. This cannot be accomplished without knowing something of the world and problem of nuclear weapons. This book offers a superb overview of this most important and vexing dilemma at this time in human history. We cannot hope to secure some level of peace and justice without study and discussion of the emerging constellation of problems and developments surrounding this issue. This book helps us to understand.

Great Book!
I teach the gifted at an elementary level and they LOVED this book! We first "read" it and determined the code. Then we created our own abstract alphabet book. Some are doing books of people, foods, or places. Two boys are doing an abstract alphabet book about themselves. It's a great springboard for creative thinking. I hope to see more books like this in the future.

Al Sijistani, Neoplatonism and Ismaili doctrine
Al Sijistani was a leading visionary during the Ismaili Fatimid period. This period was marked by a strong scientific spirit, a rational approach to the universe and a markedly humanistic view of mankind's key place in it. Al Sijistani was among the group of thinkers who coopted both rationalism and the philosophical sciences and answered that religious revelation reflected not merely a separate realm, but the whole of knowledge. Hence reason or the intellect was accepted as a valid source of Islamic understanding. Al Sijistani in fact argues that intellect can never be overconsumed, but thrives on being spent. Learning in a variety of ways improves the soul, giving it strength by adding to its share of intellect.
In reviewing this book, clearly the most interesting aspect of al Sijistani's thought is his combination of Neoplatonic ideas and Ismaili doctrine. This book is in contrast with others on the Ismaili movement that tend to focus on the mystical (batin) aspects of the faith. I have read this book several times and really enjoyed reading it because of its rational approach to the Ismaili faith. I was quite surprised by the sound, readily defensible, theoretical foundation that he was able to build for central and critical issues of Ismaili doctrine.

Everything you don't want in a manager
If you have ever had a manager you hated, you will be sure to find his/her leadership style in this book. I know I did. This book provides a humorous guide on what not to do as a manager or leader of people. The cartoons used to illustrate the text will not only stick in your mind, but will make you laugh out loud. You may also find a desperate need to use the tear outs to leave around the office. I highly recommend this leadership book!

Academic Tribes and Territories: Intellectual Enquiry and the Cultures of Discipline
Published in Paperback by Open Univ Pr (09 November, 2001)
Authors: Tony Becher and Paul Trowler
Amazon base price: $30.95
Average review score:

Disciplinary content determines intellectual perspective!
In this creatively conceived and well documented study, Tony Becher explores the notion that the content of an academic discipline determines the kinds of perspectives which emerge from the study of the discipline. He found that this influence can be so pervasive as to shape social structures within disciplines and political and social relationships between disciplines. His work predates Teirney & Bensimone's observations regarding differential faculty socialization processes among disciplines, and directly support's David Kolb's findings regarding the relationship between learning style and academic content, and Anthony Biglan's findings (1973) regarding qualitative differences in the nature of academic work. After reading Academic Tribes and Territories I found it very difficult to ignore its implications for the study of student subcultures, the delivery of student services, and the assessment of educational outcomes. I strongly recommend this book to anybody considering the study of faculty or student subcultures in higher education. If Tinto's (1975) assertion that socialization is essential to persistance is valid, further research should reveal qualitiative differences in how students successfully socialize into the various academic disciplines. Academic Tribes and Territories provides refreshing insights into the subtle dynamics which underlie this process. It is a scholarly book, which takes the topic far beyond the insightful if ungrounded musings of Hazard Adams' entertaining work, The Academic Tribes (1976). Tony Becher has produced a gem. Read it!

Must have for homework
My professor assigns homework from the Accounting Principles textbook. These working papers made doing my homework incredibly easier by saving me the time of having to draw out the lines needed for journal entries and such. I definely recommend this for anyone tempted to drop out of their accounting class because the homework takes so dang long.

Learning to think like Einstein and Bohr ...
I use Activphysics 2 in the community college physics classes I teach. Activphysics 1 & 2 show students how to solve problems by using physics concepts, pictorial and graphical representations, and only then by translating the problem into mathematics. Emphasis is placed on conceptual understanding throughout the process. Students will need to have a basic understanding of Algebra and Trigonometry, and a good introductory physics textbook, such as those by Randall Knight.
