The Greek Stones Speak: Archaeology for Dummies
This book, a companion to MacKendrick's work on Roman archaeology, The Mute Stones Speak, is one of those books you will find yourself returning to frequently, particularly if you ever travel to Greece. It is an overall view of Greek archaelogy, art and architecture from the early Minoan-Mycenaean period through the classical and Hellenistic periods. I read it in 1966 in high school Ancient History class and can actually remember the photographs and subject. It is probably not a book for the scholar but will give the lay person with an interest in archaeology an introduction to the subject, particularly how things connect together. I can still remember different characteristics about classical sculpture as opposed to the more refined Hellenistic stuff. So, if I can remember this much detail from a book I read more than 30 years ago, it must be pretty good. The part about Crete and the discovery of the Palace of Knossos is fascinating and makes you want to go there to see it in person.

Conan the Barbarian meets Wile E. Coyote meets Rube Goldberg
Ostensibly written by an evil troll who delights in his skill at designing booby-traps, this book is filled with copious illustrations and descriptions for designers of dungeons and other dangerous locales for adventurers in any game system. Non gamemaster/referees can enjoy it as well by simply laughing at the cartoon-like overkill quality of many of the traps, or admiring the elegant complexity or simplicity of the many ways the book lays out to fold, spindle, mutilate, and staple pesky adventurers who insist on crashing into carefully designed dungeons to rescue the princess/slay the dragon/steal the gold/all of the above. Many of the traps are designed to catch the jaded adventurer who has seen all the generics. Trap lethality is measured by number of skulls printed next to the title. Helpful wide margins permit extensive modifacations and precise notation of how much damage a trap would cause in a particular game system. Amusing and engrossing. Followed by sequels Grimtooth's Traps Too, Grimtooth's Traps Fore (I think), Grimtooth's Traps Ate, and Grimtooth's Traps Lite

Korean War veteran critiques films of the conflict
In his compact book, veteran Paul M. Edwards has written eight essays on various aspects of war films in general and the Korean ones in particular. He discusses the political ideology of the time, the isolation of the war, how Hollywood handled the subject and why not many of those films are very good. The second half of Edwards' book is a listing of eighty-four films (at least three of which have nothing to do with the war but take place in Korea before or afterward). These listings feature brief credits and incisive commentary regarding the films' authenticity, popularity and quality. Also included are a chronological list of the films, appendixes for actors and actresses (and one dog), producers, directors, and screenwriters, and - most welcome - an extensive list of documentary films about the Korean War. The book also features a bibliography and an index. While the book isn't comprehensive, it certainly covers most of the major films and many minor ones as well. It's easy to read and Edwards makes many thoughtful comments throughout.

Guide To Fishing West Canada Creek And Its Tributaries
Published in Paperback by Mid York Sportsman, Inc. (01 April, 1997)
Author: M. Paul Keesler
Amazon base price: $12.95
Average review score:

A Succinct, Essential Reference
For many fishermen, the sport isn't so much about catching buckets of fish as understanding the water and the factors that contribute to the piscine life within it. This short, micro-published book adds vital information to that ideal, at least with regard to West Canada Creek, one of the top trout streams in New York.

There's a short, precis-style history of the river and its fisheries and a section-by-section rundown of the most popular and/or productive areas of the river and the streams that feed it. More importantly, there's solid advice about river-reading and fish behavior, gleaned from several life-long West Canada fishermen and the author's own long experience on the river. It contains special advice for fishing with bait, lures, and flies, including a consensus on the top choices for each.

The writing is clear and concise, but it could use more editing for grammatical errors. Likewise the maps are in a confusing order and are difficult to use, but they provide the relevant information well enough to use them with supplemental maps.

The best thing about the Guide is the author's efforts to dig deeper into the river's fishing lore and to explore its upper reaches and smaller tributaries. It's much more than a list of the most crowded fishing spots: its insights open the whole river to the angler's imagination.

The first time I wet my pants in years
I read this book at night and was so scared that I didn't want to get out of bed to pee. It brought back some wonderful memories of my childhood but cleaning it up was a pain. Also, my wife was pretty upset. I was almost successful blaming it on her but the center of the stain gave me away.

I have used a lot of these creatures in my space/fantasy/old west campaign. The creatures are very creative and the outstanding artwork alone is reason enough to buy this book.

I didn't really wet my bed. But I thought about it. Maybe tonight...

Gurps Cyberworld: High-Tech Low-Life in the One-And-Twenty

Excellent material, but not enough
Steve Jackson Games has done it again. Yet another excellent roleplaying supplement has come off their press. Cyberpunk has all sorts of things to spice up your GURPS game. There is one problem though: There is not enough room in a 128 page book to cover the breadth of the cyberpunk genre. While providing an excellent introduction to cyberpunk roleplaying, it does not have the depth of other supplements. If one really wants good cyberpunk in GURPS, buy Cyberworld with this one.

Hagiography of Kievan Rus' (Harvard Library of Early Ukrainian Literature English Translation, Vol II)

Not the same as the original
For those unable or unwilling to read the original, this is an excellent source, certainly ranking with available Russian translations. The background information is meticulous. Would I suggest adding it to one's personal library? Only if you are a serious student of early Russian literature or Kievan Rus' fanatic.
