Good Story, Bad Development
For one of the first times, I am forced to absolutely agree with the review atop this one. Although this book could have been an excellent engrossing story, the author, Boston Globe reporter Eileen McNamara tries too hard to make it into a scholarly book and a cautionary tale- and does not truly make either characters come alive, or the reader understand the true nature of the relationship between Paul Lozando and his psychiatrist. The first chapters are almost exclusively based on excerpts from the court documents- and are quite boring. She doesn't know which is the relevant information to include and which could be left out- and the book is not even that long. So in other words, she does not get to the heart of the matter quick enough before the reader loses interest- I have read hundreds of true crime books- and for the first time, I lost interest enough to skim over boring section discussing the psychiatric profession at large. I did not want detailed descriptions of the medical board and its procedure- only the basic information so that I Could understand what was happening- and the truth was, that (maybe out of boredom) I couldn't figure it all out, because all of the information on the aftermath of the tragedy, in other words, everything that happened after Paul's death, is condensed into the last chapters. In short, not a particularly fulfilling read. I wonder if "Obsession", the other book on this case is better.

alarming story, but could be written better
Alarming story of how a noted psychiatrist (who was obviously very sick herself, read the notes she kept on the case) was able to turn her own demons lose on an already disturbed patient. The psychiatrist was obviously baby obsessed and serverly neurotic after nine miscarriages in four years. Her treatment of the patient reads like something from the journal of a madwoman, in my opinion. the only complaint i have (i took this book out of the library) is the pacing is way too slow, the author painstakingly goes over the patients childhood and his sister's conversations etc etc, and the final outcome is only dealt with in the last few chapters or so. i think the writer could have written a much more engrossing story if she had paced it better and gotten to the heart of the matter quicker, after all the doctors' notes are the basis of the treatment. anyway i think the story itself worked well, and i enjoyed reading it.

A Breed Apart a Tribute to The Hunting Dogs That Own Our Sou
I was inspired by the compilation of bird dog stories found within this book. If you enjoy the excitement, fear, despair, and elation associated with the training, ownership and running of all breeds of bird dogs, you will enjoy this book. The authors help you relive the moments you have endured with your own dogs in addition to helping you imagine the hunts you have yet to experience. This is a definite must read for bird dog enthusiasts.

For all dog lovers
I borrowed this book from a friend and had a tough time putting it down. Great stories from writers who truly love their dogs. A few of the essays are sad, but all of them allow us to share a part of a fellow dog lovers life with his best friend. Definitely a must read.

A Serious Disappointment
In view of the lack of modern books on this subject, and the failure to reprint the standard (and admirable) biographies, this monument of modern academic P & P (pedantry and pedagogy) is seriously disappointing. If you are seeking enlightenment about this motivation and methods of this most sublime of composers --- look elsewhere. This is a view through a microscope of the vast Brucknerian universe. You will, however, get a glimpse of current efforts to achieve tenure in academe. The standard works (in addition to Simpson, Schoenzeler, and Doernberg, perhaps the recent compilation by Stephen Johnson)remain essential --- so search the used book sites.

Bruckner Studies
It's wonderful and helpful to me.

Because, nowadays, I'm listening to his symphonies conducted by Georg Tintner.

Especially, chapter 4 of Part I is very impressive showing the annexation with NAZI.

But, I feel that this book is more general than I thought before I purchase it. Then, I can not rate this book as 'Five Stars'.

Anyway, this book should be helpful to who wants to know about the composer or the Man (Anton Bruckner).

A good reference
This volume provides a good reference for collectors of antique furniture. It includes a detailed chronology of styles and periods, coverering Europe and the US, and presents typical pieces of various categories of furniture, including details on construction. It is well illustrated. Unfortunately no relative values are provided. Also degree of rarity, popularity, etc. is also rarely mentioned.(A tip: I still think that Peter Philp's FIELD GUIDE TO ANTIQUE FURNITURE is much better. In fact, if you've got Philp's book, you don't really need this one).

Beautiful color pictures
Beautiful illustrations and detailed information about high-end antique furniture. Although it is unlikely that I could afford his museum quality examples; it is nice to see period pieces in thier purest form.

Hypocrisy and lies
A warning to all interested readers: take this book with a HUGE grain of salt. Gerry Adams helped organise a widespread campaign of bombings, kneecapping, and mass murders as leader of a group of terrorists, before he was justifiably sent to prison. Here, he uses the hardship of prison life in an attempt to arouse sympathy. Are we really supposed to feel sorry for someone responsible for such horrific crimes? The stories of prison torture are rediculous. I don't believe a terrorist, with a hatred of all things British will give a honest account of the UK justice system.

Excellent Book From an Excellent Man
If you want a reason why to support the Irish Republican cause, then pick up this excellent fast paced read. Gerry Adams is a hero to the men, women and children of NI. He knows what the people want, and that is freedom from the rude, ignorant, and selfish English.

Case studies? Yes. Context? No.
This book is a collection of articles that appeared in various issues of Campaigns and Elections magazine. Sections divide the cases of elections for U.S. Senate, House, state/local races, and ballot initiatives.

Alone, the articles are each reasonably well executed. But don't go looking for connective tissue. This book completely lacks any structure for comparison. The "case studies" are not composed in similar formats. An unfamiliar reader will have trouble understanding when events took place -- dates have been left out -- entire articles exist without reference to years that elections took place.

Articles written by managers or consultants for one candidate reject any balanced discussion of their opponents' tactics.

These aren't flaws of the writers. They're flaws of the collection. The book's editors appear to have made no effort to revise old magazine content. Chapters don't even begin or end with extra unifying information.

Long story short: this is little more than a disjointed re-packaging.

Fascinating campaign case studies
It's very hard to find good, practical case studies of political campaigns written by people who know what they're doing. This book is superb, and an excellent source for people who want to find out the inside story of how candidates win tough elections.

Chains of Deceit

Author: Paul C. Alexander

Disappointing
Somewhere there must be a gay writer who can combine escapism sex with a PLOT. He sure is not Paul Alexander. The storyline is there in theory: journalist Nathan Dexter goes undercover in the London Leatherscene to expose a slavery ring. He falls in love with a handsome young student who may be out to betray him. LOADS (ahem) of opportunity for rollicking sex and rollicking adventure. All we get is the sex, and after awhile it gets boring. It gets numbing, in fact. Mr. Publisher, I don't need to buy a book for this kind of reading experience, I can get these cheap thrills from magazines.

Nearly missed opportunities...
Okay, let me first point out that I ALMOST didn't buy this book, based solely on the review given here. Looking back on that moment of indecision, I shudder at the thought that I may have missed out on a great book for absolutely no reason other than a bad review. To be perfectly honest, I have to wonder if the other reviewer and I actually read the same book. Based on their comments, I have serious doubts that that is the case. I found the writing to be clear and concise, the plot (yes it actually has one) to be interesting, and the reading experience as a whole to be incredibly worthwhile. Had I not read this book, I would, quite simply, have missed out on one of the better books in this genre. Now, maybe it seems as though I'm according too much to what is essentially a book of gay porn writing. Maybe I am. But ultimately I found this book to be just as enjoyable to read as any number of books of varying themes. A solid read, and especially good if you're looking for more than just a cheap thrill. I can hardly wait to start into the second and third parts.

Dry but interesting
Interesting for someone just getting into this subject, it's more of a recitation of model-year features than an in-depth examination. Prose is a little dry, it livens up when Herd talks to actual designers or drivers.
Not bad, and at a good price.

Worthwhile addition
More of a coffe table book than a reference guide, this book touches on all versions of the cars including the Volare and Magnum variants. Dozens of beautiful pictures and original ad copy capture a time when horsepower meant everything. For some reason the author must have insisted every car photographed be red, I would have liked to see some of the other colors offered. A worthwhile addition nonetheless.

Out of date, short on maps, and lacking style
I've just returned from a visit to the Twin Cities. My wife and I picked this book up because it was the cheapest guide on the shelf. You get what you pay for. This edition, at least, is out of date - many of the places of interest noted in the book have closed down or changed significantly. The maps in the book are limited to a very small area of downtown St. Paul and Minneapolis - yet the book recommends plenty of places that are off the maps provided. Finally, having gotten used to Lonely Planet guides, it's hard to fathom how this author could make his topic as dull as he does. That's my two cents - I'd recommend against buying the book.

Excellent Guide Book
Small paperback contains all the necessary information to make the most out of any visit or long-term stay in the Twin Cities!

Crucial Information for Current Debates
This collection of essays provides immensely valuable information for those concerned by current debates over cloning, stem cell research, assisted reproduction, and the general march of technology in biomedical ethics.
