Tanous is a well-known financial consultant and an investment banker.Rubinstein presumably is a corporate lawyer. Both these real life experts in their respective fields have together written this novel which is a racy,taut,well-written thriller that one feels like finishing in one sitting. The story;
Saudi Arabia reeling under the onslaught of the superior armor of the Iranians is worried about Iran's intentions and desires to make itself invulnerable. The western educated, new generation oil minister and the finance minister come out with an ingenuous plan. Now they need a trustworthy investment banker in U>S who can help them carry out the plan.
John Haddad 32, an American of Arab origin, is a corporate lawyer working with Thomas Caldwell- an investment banking firm. Haddad is chosen after a detailed investigation & scrutiny of over 200 prospects.
Haddad is given an assignment, a dream come true for anyone on the wallstreet, to organize the takeover of the biggest company of the world!...General Motors!
Then start the cloak and dagger operations, the maneuvers, machinations, manipulations, counter techniques, blockades and blackmail. The whole mechanics of a takeover procedure is laid bare. GM obviously does not like to be taken over, that too by Saudis. They plan their own strategy and go on an all out war. Haddad and Saudis are no stupid, they too have their own counter tactics. Iran and the dreaded SAVAK step in to prevent the takeover by "any means". The Unions, Senators, Lobbies, and even US President take sides. Haddad and his family members are under threat.
Despite all this, through a clever action plan, Haddad accomplishes the task of getting theSaudis what they really wanted,gets nominated to the GM board, and in the process earns a profit of millions of dollars!
Haddad's employers don't like this entire glorification, they want to sack him! What will Haddad do next? Prepare for another takeover! Who is it this time?
Last page is as exciting as the first page. Within the main plot is a small but subtle love story of Haddad, which climaxes at climax of the deal.

This is an interesting anthology of articles and replies. Some of the more important articles here deal with Strawson's views in the philosophy of language (namely speech act theory) and in metaphysics.
Here are some highlights: R. Millikan, "Proper Function and Convention in Speech Acts," Haack, Between the Scylla and Charybdis of Apriorism" (excellent), McDowell, "Referring to Oneself," Blackburn, "Relativization and Truth," Pears, "Strawson on Freedom and Resentment," Putnam, "Strawson and Skepticism," and Searle, "Truth: A Reconsideration."
