A Coffee Table Must!
Beautiful pictures, great descriptions and it gives you a feel that only you can know if you love New Orleans, or are about to fall it love with it.

Beautiful
Capture in pictures and in words that New Orleans still has much beauty and history. Don't miss the beauty.

Wonderful acocunt of the life of Peter Paul Rubens
If you admire Flemish Baroque art and admire Rubens, this book is for you. An intertesting and educational documentation of his life. See parts of him you never knew. Excellent source for studying and guide for Baroque art.

Well worth reading
I bought this book because I was researching some of Rubens more obscure paintings. It was a great help though I will admit that it has been written for the intellectual reader who already knows a fair amount about Ruebens, his life and work. Svetlana Alpers presents the reader with various paintings and sketches and discusses them in detail throughout the book. This is not an easy book to read but if you are patient and are willing to read it in several sittings then you will definitely benefit from it. A good solid read for anyone wanting to research Rubens on a more scholarly level.

Malebranche: The Search after Truth : With Elucidations of The Search after Truth
Published in Hardcover by Cambridge University Press (June, 1997)
Authors: Nicolas Malebranche, Thomas M. Lennon, and Paul J. Olscamp
Amazon base price: $85.00
Used price: $30.00
Average review score:

Good book, but not an introduction to Malebranche.
While Malebranche does give a virtually complete account of his system in the Search, it's in bits and pieces throughout the (lengthy) work. If you're looking to learn what Malebranche's system was, I recommend instead getting his Dialogues on Metaphysics and on Religion, which are a much more concise and direct explanation of his system. Indeed, I'd recommend reading that book before this one regardless of your ultimate aim, since as this is a translation of the last edition of the Search, you'll find Malebranche himself often points the reader to his dialogues rather than go over everything again, and I'm not one to argue with the author!

So now you're probably wondering what this book actually is. Well, it's a treatise on method, much like Descartes' Discourse on Method, and shares much the same view as that book; hardly surprising given that Malebranche was a Cartesian. In other words it's an argument for the Rationalist method of enquiry, that is, starting with self-evident truths and deducing new truths from those. Malebranche also gives other pithy advice, such as not taking every word ancient others say to be true just because it's highly respected on so on. In addition he also goes into some detail about how Original Sin supposedly messed everything up and made us slaves to our senses.

And that's pretty much it. I recommend you read it at some point, particularly if you have a Rationalist bent yourself, but make no mistake, there are many other works that are better and more important to read before this one. What ultimately lets it down is that it's simply too long for the amount of material contained within.

An important work in Early Modern Philosophy
Malebranche's importance as a philosopher has been rediscovered in the past 50 years. I say "rediscovered" because Malebranche was extremely influential in his time--garnering disciples both on the continent and in Great Britain. Locke, Liebniz, Berkeley, Hume, Reid, et al. owe much to his work. In the Search we find Malebranche's main arguments for the doctrine of vision in God and occasionalism. This latter theory held a prominent place in the 17th century as a solution to Descartes' famous mind-body problem. Of Malebranche's work, the Search is the most important, containing a nearly complete account of his philosophical and theological system. One note of caution, the Malebranche of the Search after Truth did have a tendancy to ramble (not unlike Locke). In reading it, one will have to wade through tedious sections on the psychology of those who take themselves to be witches or werewolves and the optical illusion of the moon's image on the horizon. However, Malebranche's opus is worth reading, especially for anyone interested in the development of philosophy during its most elegant time.

Good book for beginners
Like most of the books on the Registry, this book does a very good job of explaining how to use RegEdit and RegEdt32. But in my opinion, it spends way to much time talking about "how" to access the registry and doesn't go into enough detail on what's in the registry. There's no comprehensive list of registry entries. If you are an NT administrator, there is some of the best information I've ever seen on policies here.

If you don't own any books on the Registry and you need a beginner's book on "How To" access the registry, this is the book you want. Otherwise, there are much better books on the subject.

Complete, useful & accessible treatment of WinNT registry
This book meets O'Reilly's usual high standards. I write books about Windows NT, and thought I knew the registry pretty thoroughly, but I learned several new things in almost every chapter.

Weight is not for stars.
How many visuals does it take to make a book useful? This book seems too fat for what it offers, namely some great tips that would have served me just fine in a much smaller book. I feel like I wasted my money because this didn't help me to learn, and I doubt it can serve as a reference. I think Master Microsoft® Office 2000 VISUALLY is a case of too much being too little.

An intelligent book meant for intelligent readers...
This is a really first-rate book on Office 2000 that is straightforward enough for beginners yet possesses a breadth and depth which will keep the interest of advanced users. Wonderful graphics, well-written text, all the ingredients needed to capture and keep the attention of all those fortunate enough to read this book. This book provides all the ins and outs and tips and tricks of the other books without the tedious verbosity and mind-numbing attention to obscure details of interest to literally no one but the author. The authors that write those huge 2000 page tomes write as if they're being paid by the word. Thankfully, Ms. Maran doesn't fall prey to that particular temptation. Turn to this book when you've become thoroughly disgusted with the others, you won't be sorry.

Memoirs of Sergeant Bourgogne

Fantastic
I have always been fascinated with military history and most of the books I have read concern the German Wehrmacht in World War 2. I make it a point of collecting personal diaries of ordinary soldiers experiences. Burgogne's book is one of the best war diaries I have ever read. He recounts his experiences during the capture of, and more importantly, the retreat from Moscow in vivid detail. This is an important work because he is able to articulate these experiences in his book so the reader feels as if he were there. The similarities of this work and Guy Sajer's Forgotten Soldier (World War 2)are amazing and well worth the purchase for any military enthusiast. Other good accounts of the Russina campaign are by Philippe-Paul De Segur and Armand De Caulaincourt.

Astounding
This books is unforgettable. Sergeant Bourgogne was one of the very few French soldiers to survive the retreat from Moscow. The gruesome hardships he and his fellow soldiers endure is rendered even more horrible by the matter-of-fact style in which he relates them--as for instance when he describes in detail how they are forced to burn a bridge as their retreating comrades are still marching across it. Bourgogne's perspective is ground level: no tactics, no strategy, no grand designs. All you feel is the stripped-down horror of war. And although Bourgogne remains altogether stoic and patriotic throughout his ordeal, as an urgent cry for peace, his diary ranks right up there with "The Red Badge of Courage", "All Quiet on the Western Front", and "Johnny Got His Gun". But Bourgogne's account is not fiction, and considering how few men were left to tell the tale, it is a miracle we have it at all. It should be read and remembered.

Mermaids on Parade: America's Love Affair With Its First Women Swimmers

Photo Quality
First off, this book is not a hardcover as advertised. It's a legal size paperback. The photos would have made the book but they were blurred and extremely poorly replicated. The photo collection and newspaper shots looked like good choices. I only wish I could have see them clearly.

A fascinating compendium of stories and interviews
Mermaids On Parade: America's Love Affair With Its First Olympic Women Swimmers is a fascinating compendium of stories and interviews with more than two dozen American women who competed in Olympic swimming events and helped to bring the sport to the enthusiastic attention of the sports minded public. Buck Dawson's informative and engaging text is enhanced with a profusion of period photographs of the female athletes who dominated this women's sport event from 1907 to 1957 and rose to excellence in this competitive sport with grace, beauty and personality -- making generations of girls want to learn to swim and to compete. Mermaids On Parade is highly recommended reading for Olympic sports enthusiasts, women's studies supplemental reading lists, and anyone who has every thrilled to a women's swim meet competition.

Finally!
Professor Horsley has repeatedly offered us books impeccably researched and annotated in great detail. Yet despite the promise of those works, Horsley has too often hidden his gifts behind an impenetrable wall of technicalities and minutia. In his attempts to demonstrate his intelligence, Horsley has sometimes made his writing obtuse and inaccessible to the average reader.

This, however, is not one of his failures. Here Horsley finally gets it right. Here Horsley fulfills the promise of his other works.

Examining the politics, sociology, psychology and religion of the renewal movements founded by John the Baptist, Jesus of Nazareth, and Paul of Tarsus, Horsley and Silberman weave an exhilarating narrative that exposes the historical roots of Christianity. Thoroughly comprehendible by the lay reader, without sacrificing scholarship, this book demonstrates that the authors can strike an appropriate balance between academia and popular reading.

Social Reform
Harsley and Silberman provide a social and economic setting of the time of Jesus and Paul (10 BCE - 70 CE) and the "Jesus Movement". Without addressing the religious truth of Christianity, they describe its social context and the impact it had on Palestine and the eastern Mediterranean.

The authors draw on recent archaeological finds to present a picture of life during this time. Along with the Bible and writings of Josephus, they use non-canonical early Christian writings, and Roman documents and inscriptions.

Bibliographical Notes in addition to the Bibliography make it easy to refer to more original sources in topics of interest.

The book is somehat hard to read, visually. This edition uses a very light serif font, and the paragraphs are rather long. Some familiarity with Biblical accounts of Jesus and Paul would be helpful for the reader.

Methylation does it.
The previous reviewer, DiNapoli, said he was seeking additional information on Methylation. I agree that this book isn't quite enough. I was able to find a better explanation in Cooney's book Methyl Magic and at a site, iHerb. Both these gave corroborating information that was easier to digest than this book. If you can afford both books, then by all means, buy them because this one does have a little more scientific documentation than the other, but I have come to trust iHerb for not only their products, but for the books that they recommend . I have been on SAMe and their powdered Kava (shake with 8 ounces of juice and down quickly!) for a while now and am seeing marked improvement in my mental health and my quality of sleelp. It is exactly this methylation that is referred to in this book.

Nutrition is Where Its At
Dr. Frankel's book may just save your life. Making your way through technical descriptions eventually gets you to the point...Eat right. I liked the book and will make a change in my diet as a result of the readings. I'm searching for more information on the Methylation process.

Excellent resource, but....
Wonderful pictures, excellent descriptions- EXCEPT IT COMPLETELY MISSES THE HULL THICKNESSES! I'm trying to design and build my own sub, and this is an excellent book. HOWEVER- it only mentions the thickness of the hulls once or twice- one its "3mm thick" (German SeaHound) and the "X-Craft" it lists at "8 pounds", then "10 Pounds", then "10 Pounds S". Theres no explaination on what these dimensions mean. .... ...

"Great" Midget Submarines
This book of such famous publisher in the naval subjects is probably one or even the unique of its kind. Unfortunatelly naval subjects aren't much regarded by the international publishers and even those that publish this books use to forgot the subject of the Midget Submarines. The book itself is one excellent reference for submarines and midget submarines investigators and lovers. Starting with the birth of those ships in the early of the 20th century and detailling them during the critical phases of World War II. It is important to say that the book distinguishes three types of midget submarines: the Human Torpedoes like the Maiale or the Chariot; the Submersibles like the Molch, Biber and Kaiten; and the Midget Submarines like X-Craft and the Seehund. Tecnical details and historical information fulls the texts of the book with great credibility. Close in photos and excellent drawings by David J. Hill give us one dettailed overview of this small ships that have challenged greatest enemies and with few chances of survivability. It is the best overview book about this subject, it was too much too ask for a single book for a specific kind of ship or class of the Midget Submarines.
