Ragaz: A Christian Socialsit
Ragaz is a Christian Democratic Socialist on par with Lenin and Trotsky. However, he is unheard of because of his pacifist convictions. While he was a major player in the Socialist movement, he had to give priority to what he believed was God's purpose in the state over his dedication to the state itself. This book is a challenge to be involved in this-worldly service to God. Ragaz sees the telos of the state and economic order as having two primary purposes: 1)to serve God, 2)to serve human beings. This book is a social commentary critiquing greed, exploitation, and unequal distribution based upon Biblical examples and mandates. Because the Kingdom of God has broken into this world, Ragaz calls us to have hope and to participate in God's work here and now. He is calling us to a concrete exegesis of Christ and his life rather than a spiritualization and abstraction of his life and teachings. He sees religion as a social construct which ends with God's presence. Ragaz is influenced by Wurttenburg Pietism, and he excersizes an unrecognized influence on hundreds of years of subsequent theology.

Sir Charles Grey, First Earl Grey: Royal Soldier, Family Patriarch
Published in Hardcover by Fairleigh Dickinson Univ Pr (April, 1996)
Author: Paul David Nelson
Amazon base price: $37.50
Used price: $25.00
Average review score:

A decent if limited book on a major British general.
Nelson has put in a decent amount of work and has written an extremely useful account of a major British 18th century military figure. He writes as an American and as such it is gratifying that his research is by no means solely concerned with Grey's role in the US Revoluiton or his conquest of the West Indies but goes into some detail about his role in organising the defence of Britain from the ever present threat of a French invasion.

What this book lacks is any great insight into Grey's character or any great insight into Grey's relationship with his better known son Grey the prime minister of the Reform Bill. Nelson's footnotes show that he has read both Derry and Smith's recent biographies of the prime minister but they have not helped him to investigate critical questions. Nelson suggests that Grey's career was stopped short of the glory he might have risen to because of a cooling of his relationship with his patron, the royal Duke of York, but nowhere does he suggest that he has even contemplated that Grey's son's contraversial position on matters of parliamentary reform, or his close association with the Foxites, might be responsible for this.

Nevertheless for any future historian of either fathre or son Nelson's book will prove invaluable because of his careful footnotes and wide research.

Good, but not great
The new Paul Kirk book "Smoke It!" contains some good recipes, many of which stretch the boundaries that we normally associate with traditional barbecued foods. The text that accompanies each recipe is pure Paul Kirk, but the beautifully styled food photos seem oddly out of place. Anyone who's met Chef Paul knows he's a down-to-earth kind of guy, and it's hard to imagine him serving up this food in the settings portrayed in the photos. Despite this bit of cognitive dissonance, it's a good book, though not as useful as "Paul Kirk's Barbecues Sauces and Rubs".

Good but there are better books for the cost
This is a good book for 4th - 6th grade children. I'm a 5th grade teacher (and a big astronomy fan). We have this book at our school. It has some nice pictures and information, but the price is too high compared to other books about the universe that contain better pictures and more information. For example I prefer The Reader's Digest Children's Atlas of the Universe. I've read it. It's a much better book. It has much more information, ideas, etc. I haven't read, but I am thinking of getting the DK Space Encyclopedia. It looks good too. I'd recommend either of these books first.

Chapter 5 details digging for facts at Borley Rectory
Details excavations at burned out Borley Rectory in the 50s. Two photos - one of the excavation. Information not reported in many other sources. Tells of a seance he attended where the audible message came through the medium, "Go away. Leave us alone." Explains how he, "gathered evidence, from reliable witnesses, of sightings of the 'nun' phantasm and other unexplained happenings in [several years]." One witness - Ethel Bull - told him, "What would be the use of an old lady like me, waiting to meet her Maker, telling a lot of fairy stories?" Ethel died in 1961, "still sticking to her story," of seeing a phantom nun.

political compromise receives a predictable poke
I loved Paradise Postponed. Even the name Leslie Titmuss makes me smile. Leslie reappears here, but the attention focuses on a wimpy candidate whom it's hard to root for. All seemed a bit tired, even the humor.

Detailed Brochure
This book does not give much information on implementing PeopleSoft technically. Rather, it's a book that advertises the capabilities of PeopleSoft and its different Modules. This book teaches consultants how to do project management rather than how to use peopletools. I would not recommend this book for technical people. It's a book for consultants, who wants to know things to consider in implementing peoplesoft, what resources are needed and how to go about with a project. But it won't teach you how to really use peoplesoft.

Provides basic information on Spice simulation
I use this book mostly for referencing command syntax. Most people don't hand enter Spice netlists anymore, but this book is still very useful if you want to no why and how things work behind the scenes. I would have liked more information about advanced device modeling.
