Two Ways of Praying
Published in Paperback by Abingdon Press (February, 1995)
Author: Paul F. Bradshaw
Amazon base price: $13.95
Average review score:

Excellent survey of cathedral and monastic prayer
This book should be required reading for anyone not appreciating their liturgical heritage. Bradshaw has written a readable, slim volume describing cathedral and monastic prayer - their appropriate use, history, the need for both in a full spiritual life ...

Cathedral prayer is the communal prayer with fixed roles, use of external signs, etc. generally oriented towards the benefit of the world at large. Monastic prayer is the private prayer with temporary roles, external signs only as training devices, generally oriented towards the benefit of the one praying. This distinction derives from early church practices.

Bradshaw shows that either practiced to the exclusion of the other is harmful - to the church and to the individual.

Consider this an essential book for anyone interested in prayer, liturgy or spiritual direction.

A Different Look
I found this novel while shifting through volumes of books on the peace corps in my college library. While I was skeptical at first, this novel proved to be a real joy to read.

The author was a volunteer in Nepal a while back and gives a fresh perspective to not only the village and job he had placed before him, but also his life and attitudes and how they changed.

Nothing is sugar-coated in this book. Phil, the author, keeps it straight and real while maintaining enough direction to keep the reader interested. I would recommend anyone who is considering joining the peace corps, as I was, read this factual and human account of two years in Nepal.

Typhoon and Other Stories (20th Century Classics)

essential writing
The stories in this book are sea tales in Conrad's tradition of pessimistic, psychological fiction. Typhoon is particularly good, but the other stories are interesting as well. If it seems like Conrad is just writing adventure stories, well, that's just not true. He's writing about the most important themes, and setting them against a backdrop of exciting seafaring and travel.

If a reader finished Heart of Darkness, and enjoyed it, then that reader might want to pick this book up next, and give it a whirl.

Good Stories and Grammar
This book has many excerpts from Zola's "Thérèse Raquin" and explains many of the exceptions to rules of grammar in the latter half of the book. A good book for those wanting to learn French through both stories and exercises.

The truth, keenly rendered. Skip the Prefaces.
This quiet gem ought not to be overlooked by anyone interested in beautiful writing combined with unsparing, intelligent self-consciousness. From its brilliant title on, Unbecoming is Rousseau's Confessions for the age of AIDS. Skip the various prefaces by well-meaning but uninsightful people (I'd have given the book five stars if the editors had been wise enough to let Michaels speak for himself), and go straight to the journals of Eric Michaels, an American academic teaching in Australia and dying of AIDS. Here you'll find the unmistakable voice of a chastened, ironic, post-'sixties sensibility, a man reflecting on eros, liberatory politics, and moral truths. Though hip and funny, Unbecoming is also painful to read, its cover illustration and author photo painful to look at. But anyone who values self-awareness as much as Michaels obviously did owes it to him or herself to enter into this testament.

Unit Operations and Processes in Environmental Engineering
Good and well organized book for a graduate class in environmental/sanitary engineering. Unlike the traditionally used book, it is organized for easy reference and study. It includes most of the unit processes to consider in the desing of wastewater and water treatment plants. I wish it would expand a litte more in the water part. The wastewater is covered very well. It is a good book to keep as a reference. Answer to key problems are provided for easiness of verification of process. Couple of formulas are outdated in the air transfer chapter, not major problem.

Paul McCartney Goes Too Far
Ian Peel methodically tracks McCartney's experimental music work going back to Revolver and detailing many half-forgotten, odd Wings tracks, B-sides, and side projects. Not just about his avant-garde career but looking at his musical career beyond its pop context. It would have been better had it explored the fascinating dynamic of his simultaneous experimental/avant garde work with his classical composing, which is not given much space. Only other hesitation to five stars is at times it is too laudatory where more critical writing might have been more appreciated. Still, quite an achievement. This book goes very far (Paul McCartney Goes Too Far was the title proposed for a Beatles era experimental Stockhausen/Cage inspired work he never finished) toward giving more appropriate weight to what Paul was up to all those Wings years outside of the pop spotlight.
