An easily accessed encyclopedia of basic information
Illegal Drugs: A Complete Guide To Their History, Chemistry, Use And Abuse by Dr. Paul M. Gahlinger (Professor of Medicine, University of Utah) is a comprehensive, easily accessed encyclopedia of basic information surveying the vast variety of addictive, incapacitating, and/or deadly chemicals that have plagued human societies. From opiates to amphetamines, anti-drug laws and drug testing to legal psychoactive drugs such as alcohol, Illegal Drugs provides a wealth of information in a direct and easy-to-look-up matter, further aided by the extensive index. Written in terms the non-specialist general reader can easily understand Illegal Drugs is as complete and thorough a reference as one can find without consulting college-level textbooks or professional medical references. Highly recommended for personal, professional, academic, health agency, and community library pharmaceutical reference collections.

Accurate, But Sometimes a Little Annoying
I'm not going to throw rocks at this book, because there is an incredible dearth of good information on this subject, and in the information in this book is excellent. But when Gahlinger says "complete," he is not kidding. This is a great resource for the sophisticated student of the subject, with history, sociology and legal issues as well as medical info, and lots of coverage of obscure drugs. For people whose interest in the subject which is either more casual or practical (e.g. "Is this stuff dangerous?" or "What's my kid getting into?") the book may be a little overwhelming.

I cannot stress how thoroughly superior this book is to Andrew Weil's "From Chocolate to Morphine."

Accurate, No-nonsense Information
In the vein of Andrew Weil and Winifred Rosen's From Chocolate to Morphine, Gahlinger's Illegal Drugs exemplifies a complete, 'safety-first' approach to discussing illicit drugs and drug use in this country. Gahlinger goes beyond simply explaining the effects of various drugs on the body and mind; he explores the non-physical -but equally important- aspects of drug use/abuse, including extensive information on the legal consequences of involvement with drugs, drug testing in the workplace, economics of the drug trade, and the origins of U.S. drug policy. Perhaps most outstanding aspect of Gahlinger's book is his thorough, no-nonsense instructions for detecting a drug overdose and seeking efficient, timely medical care for the victim- knowledge that could, one day, be the deciding factor between the death or recovery of a friend or loved one. The accurate, rational information contained in Gahlinger's Illegal Drugs is an invaluable gift for any young adult today.

A great book for real seekers
Do you really want to wake up? Then this book is for you. Full of practical reccomendations from someone who's really there. No philosophy or esoteric jargon, just down to earth 100% practical suggestions for daily life -to wake up. But you really have to want it, because, for one thing, you'll have to start telling your truth! And that's not, as you know, always comfortable and convenient. But the truth liberates... Great book, even more practical and useful than Paul's previous title, The Experiment is Over.

ONE WHO TRULY WALKS WITHOUT LIMITATIONS !
Paul Lowe is a man of such courage and inspiration that I find myself constantly returning to his pages . Out of the dozens of spiritual books I have encountered, there is no one who touches me so deeply with such profound unwavering truth as what this man does. Life becomes so much better when we are "in the moment" and "invitational to the next level of ourselves". This book is a gentler approach than his previous "The Experiment Is Over", which was not for the feint hearted.

The only book on life and consciousness you may ever need.
This is probably the clearest book I have ever read on life and existence. It has inspired me to change my perspective on everything, challenged all my assumptions about how things are and guided me back to what is real. Paul takes complex subjects and makes them easy to understand and practical to apply in life. He does this in a supportive and fun way. It reminds me of the book "Conversations With God" but simplier and with a more direct style. Be prepared for an adventure in consciousness!

This book is a godsend.
I always wondered if I was the only person in the world who was blown away by products like "Armour Pork Brains in Milk Gravy". Paul Lukas has proven that a) I'm not alone and b) if I was more talented I could have made money writing a book about bizarre products. My only complaint about this book was that it ended. I was ready for hundreds of more examples, particularly the weird foods.

This is the ultimate product!<BR>Bryan Allison
As Sigue Sigue Sputnik so weirdly proved back in the '80s, _anything_ can be a product (even a rock band). This well-written, researched and hilarious book takes us from Thirst and Musk LifeSavers (a favorite in the former penal colony known as Australia) to microwave pork rinds and the smoker's robot (read to believe). The perfect read-to-your-friend-in-the-car-while-roadtripping book

This book is awesome
Paul has a talent for looking twice at products we usually take for granted. It's the "how did we ever miss this?" attitude he takes that makes his book and writing so fun -- he's got a great wit and eye for the absurd in everyday life. After reading his book (and his zine, Beer Frame), I've never been able to go to the supermarket in the same way again

A great improvement on an already excellent book
The book itself is a well structured process of developing a business plan that has served me well. By adding the downloadable software, it greatly enhances the process, making it easy to use and improves the likelihood that users will create a professional business plan. It is so much easier to tailor something than to start from scratch. I think the book is an excellent value.

A must-read for Entrepreneurs
We have been recommending that the attendees to our seminar purchase "The Instant Business Plan." The book has been found to be one of the best presentations for new entrepreneurs. It is easy to make a business plan by answering the numerous questions presented. This framework of a business plan is then organized to make it a finished presentation following the sample plan as a guide. --Alex Grossman, Seminar Chairman, SCORE, Chapter #29, Miami

Internal Quality Systems Auditing
Published in Paperback by Customer Focused Operations (15 March, 1998)
Author: Paul F. Lewis
Amazon base price: $69.95
Average review score:

This book combines practical advice with real-world examples
In his first book "Internal Quality System Audits" (no longer in print) Mr. Lewis identified the basic fundamental auditing skills and techniques needed to ensure effective and efficient development, implementation and maintenance of "value added" internal auditing capabilities. Our internal auditing operations have been in place for over four years now and I still find myself referring to this book for guidance on regular bases. It is the most dog-eared of all my books on quality and quality operating systems.

His second book "Internal Quality Systems Auditing" includes and builds on these proven methodologies and has now replaced its dog-eared predecessor as my desk reference. The updated sections on development of audit programs and checklists, documenting audit observations and findings, and audit reporting techniques provide the latest guidance for addressing evolving quality system requirements.

The latest edition makes a great reference and helps keep my audit reporting on track.

An excellent teaching tool for internal auditor training.
The "Internal Quality System Audits" book has proven to be a valuable tool for our internal audit team. The guidelines and the checklists have been used by our company from the beginning of our ISO program, and all seven of our internal auditors have accomplished top quality audits with skill and confidence.

"Internal Quality System Audits" is an excellent teaching tool for internal auditor training.

A true "how-to" desk level document.
As a certified quality system auditor and contracted ISO 9000/QS 9000 quality systems consultant I use the auditing methodoligies, tools and techniques presented in this book when establishing internal auditing operations for my clients. I also use the book as a desk referencs when functioning as their lead internal auditor.

If your goal is to develop, implement and maintain an effective and efficient internal audit operation this book is a must have. Internal Quality Systems Auditing is truly a "how-to" presentation.

Amazingly comprehensive subject material
This is a tremendous book for those interested in Christian counseling. I already own one; I'm buying another for my father who is a pastoral counselor. I am currently a counseling graduate student at John Brown University and the variety of subject material that this book covers is simply amazing. It is by far my favorite counseling book, and I have read dozens. It does not knock science, as unfortunately some Christian counseling theorists do. It recognizes scientific truths, while remaining true to the Bible.

Outstanding and comprehensive study of general psychology
From the physical basis to counseling modalities, this is the obvious textbook of choice for schools desiring to teach psychology from a Christian viewpoint. This is great for upper division high school or a general course for college students.

Surveys introductory psychology with a Christian perspective

The Invention of George Washington
Published in Paperback by University Press of Virginia (March, 1999)
Author: Paul K. Longmore
Amazon base price: $17.00
Used price: $10.20
Average review score:

A deliberate, power hungry G.W.
Paul Longmore has written an excellent book for the serious George Washington scholar. George Washington is a difficult man to understand. After reading five books on the man, along with several published books and articles on the Revolutionary War, Federalist Period, and biographies of other people who were active in Washington's days, I still have a hard time grasping why such a diverse group of people universally looked up to and respected Washington. Edmund Morgan's book, "The Genius of George Washington" helped me to understand how Washington wielded power once it was attained, and this book helps to fill in the gaps as it describes how George Washington worked his way toward greatness.

Longmore's argument in the book is that George Washington was FAR from a minor player in his rise to fame. It wasn't through a series of coincidences or through fate that Washington became the very embodiment of the American Revolution and Federalist Era. Longmore argues that Washington had, in his youth, an insatiable lust for power...but would only seek to achieve it through socially respectable means (highly developed interpersonal skills didn't hurt, either). It is through an examination of what constitutes "socially respectable," Washington's writings, and examining the change in his tone as he matures that Longmore bases his premise. In my opinion, he does a very good job of it. His arguments are strong and backed up in an extensive end-notes section. The only problem I have with his research is that I would have liked to see Longmore's view on two major incidences that happened in Washington's early life and how they affected his rise to fame: the death of his older brother/patron Lawrence; and his marriage to the filthy rich widow, Martha Custis. In all, Longmore has written an excellent book that I would recommend to anyone who would like to begin a serious study of the early life of the "First in War, First in Peace, First in the Hearts of his Countrymen."

By the way, this is not a cradle-to-grave biography of Washington, but follows his life from birth until about the time he takes command of the Continental Army.

Washington, a Complex Character
Paul Longmore's biography of George Washington is a superb book. It portrays Washington as a complex Virginian. Neither a stone-like figure nor an unread hero, Washington becomes an interesting and even vulnerable leader. Well written, Longmore's book is a must for people interested in Washington and in colonial history.

An excellent book on the origins of the Washington image
Paul Longmore's book, "The Invention of George Washington" is a wonderful book about the Washington that people have come to know over the years. Longmore looks at Washington's life chronologically and compares it with the image of Washington as the Father of Our Country. Longmore shows that one of the most important people in shaping this image was George Washington himself. Washington was constantly concerned with what others thought of him. He always lived his life as if he were on a stage with the whole world was watching. At many of these points, they were watching. Washington was setting the model for future leaders of the United States as Commander-in-Chief, and ultimately as President. Behind this image of a man doing the best for his country, however, is a man of ambition. Especially as a young man during his days commanding Virginia troops in the French and Indian war, Washington strived for recognition among his fellow colonists and from the British regulars that he was forced to serve under. As Washington matured, he was more successful at curbing this ambition. It was during these years that Washington built his reputation and became known as the Father of Our Country.

Wonderful array of photos
This book contains little excerpts from various speeches and works of Pope John Paul II. It also contains a brilliant collection of photos taken of the Pope over the years. It is an inspirational book, and a GREAT collection of photos, if you are looking for pics of our wonderful Pope.

Beautiful and Moving
This book is deeply inspirational. What a great gift Pope John Paul II is to the world! The photograph of the Holy Father and Mother Theresa smiling into each other's eyes is incredible. This book is a personal treasure.

-Very intense,astounding!...A golden light for anyone-
In his most recent account, His Holiness Pope John Paul the II is still representing a truly Christian view of not only Europe but the whole world. John Paul the II gives concrete examples of how you can be happy and live "joyfully" through the "living spirit". The Pope says that you must be humble and completely surrender to GOD. Only then can a "true beleiver" find a bit of peice in "the world of men". He goes on to site many examples, idieas , and even mentions some of the great saints in thr tradition! ...

Whether you are a professional financial planner or just someone who wants to know more about retirement planning, you will find something in this book for you. In 200 pages, this book covers the material that some of the other books who spend far more pages could not have done. In fact, the really complex material is covered in just about 30 pages and it takes some of the other books almost 300 pages to cover the same thing.

This book tells you exactly what you need to know, including the updates from the tax law in 2001 and how it impacts retirement savings. All the confusion with the maximum contributions and deductible limits with IRA and 401(k) are all explained. But it goes beyond that to include actual worksheets for those who want more details. It also explains some of the more thorny issues like Pension income and the 3 stages of retirement spending levels.

Overall, I would highly recommend this book.

Great Retirement Book!
I expected a typically, dry, boring book, but I was pleasantly surprised. It was well written and gave me insightful advice, including useful worksheets, tax advice, and many other ideas. I recommend it highly for anyone planning to retire.

J.K. Lasser's New Rules for Retirement and Tax
As a longtime fan of Paul Westbrook's, and having benefited greatly from his advice, I'm admittedly biased in his favor. I can say with all honesty that this book is a thorough, well-written guide, easily accessible to the uninitiated. It should be a boon to anyone who wants to understand how to plan his or her financial future.

Jim Peters - Friend and Mentor
As one who is friends with Jim Peters, I can recommend this book to anyone who is a Texas history buff, especially those with an interest in Ranger lore. Jim truly was a Ranger when "Rangers were Rangers".

I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
Jim Peters has had a remarkable life, and it's fascinating to read about his adventures as a Texas Ranger. The author makes you feel as though you're right there with Peters and the Rangers as they piece together evidence and track down the bad guys. The fact that these are true crime stories makes them all the more interesting. The ones involving coldblooded killers make you grateful for the courage and dedication of men like Jim Peters. Other stories involving lesser crimes and dumb or unlucky criminals are very funny. A neat book.

Entertaining True Crime
Jim Peters, Texas Ranger is extremely readable as it consists of great stories of the activities of this reknowned and capable Texas Ranger. The Rangers, of course, are the best of the best, and Jim Peters was highly respected by his fellows. He was involved in the resolution of a lot of high-profile cases and the book is an interesting piece of both true crime and history.
