The Pony and the Missing Dog (Pony Pals)
Published in Unknown Binding by Bt Bound (March, 1901)
Authors: Jeanne Betancourt and Paul Bachem
Amazon base price: $11.55

Pony pals #27
This book, like all Pony Pals books, was pretty good. The series is repetitive in the sense that the books always end happily, and there are really no plot twists. This book was no different. Overall, it was well-written, but a little boring.

Post Mortem: New Tales of Ghostly Horror

Average collection of ghost stories.
There's nothing really bad about the stories in this anthology, but there's nothing exceptional or revelatory, either. One story in particular is kind of old hat (war victims haunting a U.S. soldier). All but one of the tales are contemporary. I found the more memorable works to be from the following authors: Charles deLint, Thomas Tessier, Kathryn Ptacek, Melissa Mia Hall, and David B. Silva.
Recommended only if ghost tales are your particular area of interest.

Good effort, but cryptic
Somewhere in this book Monod has a good point. The problem is that his writing is cryptic, and the point is hard to find. Even if you manage to do it, you will probably find that it was not worth the effort.

A Practical Guide to Analog Behavioral Modeling for Ic System Design
Published in Hardcover by Kluwer Academic Publishers (November, 1998)
Author: Paul A. Duran
Amazon base price: $139.00
Average review score:

Heavily oriented toward the MAST modeling language
Although it provides a comparison of the different languages which you might use for modeling analog systems (Verilog-A, VHDL-AMS, spice, etc), this book is heavily oriented toward MAST. It has many examples, but all use MAST as the description language. As such, this book is likely to be of little or no use to someone using Verilog-A, spice, etc. If you use MAST, however, this book is probably all you'll ever need.

The Prince of the Quotidian
Published in Paperback by Wake Forest University Press (September, 1994)
Author: Paul Muldoon
Amazon base price: $5.95
Used price: $38.00
Average review score:

Hardly quotidian, but...
An odd little book, this is more of a journal in verse than a collection of independent poems. It was published at about the same time that Farrar, Straus and Giroux published Muldoon's THE ANNALS OF CHILE, and the style here is quite similar to that book's long poem "Yarrow." Like "Yarrow," this sequence is highly allusive and makes plenty of inside personal jokes as well; you don't so much hope to understand it as just go along for the ride. What mitigates the opacity somewhat is Muldoon's playful approach to form: the entries often fall into sonnets, and there's always some kind of rhyme scheme to trace. Muldoon's trademark playful pararhyming is very much on display here, as when he criticizes an Irish production for making Chekhov "more Irish / than a rush." Anyone who already enjoys Muldoon should read this, but it certainly shouldn't be the first thing you read by him.

Well researched and written........
This book is an expert treatise on the Roy Moody case. Any person who is interested in Explosive Investigations would find this book a compelling read. Several photogrgaphs, including device xrays are included. It would be a good used reference book for a library on the subject.

Pulp: The Illustrated Story
Published in Paperback by Hal Leonard (September, 1996)
Author: Paul Lester
Amazon base price: $14.95
Average review score:

An short but interesting biography on a very talented group.
With very few books available on this band, it is perfect for diehard fans who like to read about the band's background in short form, as well as have lots of full-color pictures to look at. The book contains well over 100 pictures, ranging from the early 80's which the band spent floating around in obscurity, to their launch into superstardom in 1995 with the release of their critically acclaimed masterpiece, "Different Class". The life story of frontman Jarvis Cocker fills many of the 80 something pages, while smaller sections are devoted to the other members. I guess my one complaint is that the book is very short, and while it offers some background, it doesn't really elaborate on much. It can be called the "Coles Notes" of Pulp's story. What it lacks in depth, it makes up in pictues, but I would have prefered a more complete history rather than to look at 100 assorted pictures of Jarvis Cocker. But why nitpick? It is one of very few books on this great band available.

Queen of the Elephants
Published in Audio Cassette by Chivers Audio Books (February, 1996)
Authors: Mark Shand and Paul Shelley
Amazon base price: $54.95
Used price: $32.22
Average review score:

Queen of the Elephants
A good read if you are a seasoned traveller in India and a fan of 'Travels on My Elephant' the cracking original which inspired this follow-up. However the book is disappointing in many ways as it seems to repeat the story of Shand's apprenticeship as a Mahoot only under new circumstances and a new teacher. Much of the mystery and adventure of the first novel could not translate into this sequel. On the plus side the prose, the plot and the writing craft unfold in a very readable way and one wonders why this author has not published more than three books.

It's Pronounced: Ralph One To Foresee For One!
This is the seminal work in sci-fi by the man who's editing direction shaped the modern genre, Hugo Gernsback, the guy they named the Hugo Awards after.

A future where everyone wears electric roller skates, has a number instead of a last name and cities have moving side walks... One of theose travelogues of the future extrapolated by a writer from the very beginings of the pulp era. The gadgetry seems almost Victorian, the philosophy seems dated, yet somehow you'll never forget this book.

I read this book in the early 60's and it was already very quaint and dated even back then. But somehow I've never forgotten it and parts of this book come to mind even now almost 40 years later. If you've ever seen the 1930 film "Just Imagine," then this is the literary equivalant.
