This book is about nuclear winter, and what scientists have determined it will probably be like. Before I say anything else, let me state as clearly as possible that I am not an expert in this topic. Sometimes it isn't always clear, reading Amazon.com reviews, whether the writer is an expert or just someone who read the book. I am in the second of those categories. Let me quickly mention that I have also read Lydia Dotto's "Planet Earth in Jeopardy: Environmental Consequences of Nuclear War," and I found that to be quite helpful as well. This book is one of the scariest things I've ever read. It clued me in on entirely new things over which people should be losing sleep. Did you know that one of the major threats of nuclear war is the threat of strikes on oil refineries? Such strikes can release unbelievably quantities of sun-blocking smog into the air. Did you know that radiation caused directly by nuclear bombs is relatively insignificant, compared to the radiation that would be released if such bombs fell on reactors? Reactors have fuel rods and waste which will remain lethally radioactive for DECADES after the radiation from a nuclear war reached tolerable levels. This book is full of information like this. It is all presented quite accessibly. Also, there is a fantastic question and answer section at the end, which includes back and forth sessions between eminent scientists in related fields. This section alone is worth the price of the book.

Let me point out that the main author listed for this book is only one of many cotributors. Paul Ehrlich has a lot to say here, but it is always made clear when he is writing, or when it's someone else, e.g. Carl Sagan or Lewis Thomas. I make this point here because I wouldn't want anyone to decide against buying this valuable book, because of Ehrlich's old reputation for being an alarmist. In the 1970s, as a member of the "Club of Rome," Ehrlich made some irresponsible statements about the dangers of population growth and energy shortages. Time has shown that he actually wasn't entirely wrong, but his timetables for his predictions were often overly pessimistic. Be that as it may, Stanford University has seen fit to keep him on their faculty, so he can't be seen as wholly out to lunch.

At any rate, this book is certainly worth wrestling with. Ehrlich bends over backwards, to be as conservative and non-alarmist as possible, in his writings here. Carl Sagan, Lewis Thomas, and other contributors take the same approach. Nevertheless, as cool-headed as they are, the underlying horror of their message is unmistakable. Nuclear winter would be an unprecedentedly horrific experience, and there's basically zero chance that anyone reading this would survive it. Please buy this book, get copies for all your friends, and find a way to get involved.

I love horror, always have. But I have gotten tired of the traditional writers. You know the ones, they're the ones you see on the book shelves at every book store. I think it's time for some new blood in horror and with Cold Storage that is exactly what you will receive. Cold Storage showcases some great stories of imagination and fright. Cold Storage is a great book, one I recommend to anyone who enjoys horror.

This book skillfully captures the essence of how to effect change in large organizations in a rapid and integrated manner. It weaves together many of the key concepts of organizational change while highlighting how to apply them in ways that will facilitate lasting and significant shifts in how large numbers of managers and staff go about their business. It is an easy to read reference that can be consulted over and over again as new organizational challenges arise.

One of America's most prolific poets, Paul Laurence Dunbar wrote at a time when there were few African-Americans being published and praised by many of the literary elite. This volume contains the poets's most respected works. Dunbar wrote in a variety of styles, but is most remembered for the use of "slave dialect" to express the humor, the pathos, and hardships of the condition of the black man in America. Highlights include "When Malindy Sings," an entertaining opus to a "sistah" with "nat'chel" singing "o'gans," "An Ante-Bellum sermon," which features a subtle commentary on slavery, and "The Colored Soldiers," a haunting piece that delves into the inequalities of servitude in the United States armed forces. The words, though a century old are just as timeless today as they were when they were originally written. For me To cite just three in this work of so many excellent verses is a gross understatement. All the "treasures" here should be read and re-read to fully appreciate the gifted mind of this literary master.

The nation and the world should be grateful to these important social commentaries of verse by one Paul Laurence Dunbar. I know that I, as an American, am enternally appreciative.

A collection of prose, some unbelievably brief in length, by Paul Celan, one of Europe's foremost poets. Celan, who was scarred by the concentration camps, pushed language to its every edge -- and beyond -- in his poems. The essay "Meridian," in this volume, is his longest commentary on what poetry is, and what it does. It is a remarkable essay, dense yet readable, provocative, erudite, astonishingly full of insights on the relation between poet and history, between poetry and the "altogether other" (as Celan puts it). "The poem is lonely. It is lonely and en route. Its author stays with it. Does this very fact not place the poem already here, at its inception, in the encounter, in the mystery of the encounter?" I find I can meditate on what he says at great length, and with great richness. As a teacher of literature, I cannot think of an essay that blows me away as powerfully as this one. Although it claims to be about poems, it is about living in a social world, a world that exists in historical time; it is likewise about how each of us faces into language, how we face ourselves, how we face the other human beings who live around us and whom we contact through language. Here is Celan at his richest and best: if this excites you, you will want to read this book. And if not, not. "The poem holds its ground, if you will permit me yet another extreme formulation, the poem holds its ground on its own margin. In order to endure, it constantly calls and pulls iself back from an 'already-no-more' into a 'still-here.' This 'still-here' can only mean speaking. Not language as such, but responding and--not just verbally--'corresponding' to something."

This is a great collection of some of the most important papers of E.P. Wigner. It contains his famous paper on representations of the Lorentz Group, as well as a lot of articles on Group Theory.

Was Khlebnikov the greates russian poet of this century? With Mandelstam he probably was. At least he was the most futurist one and of all the avant-garde poets i'd believe he's been the greatest. His influence has been extraordinary on artist in this century. I can recall american artist Richard Serra considering him as one of his favourites poets and in Spain, Jorge Oteiza wrote once that the russian was the greatest poet of the century. Celan, Mandelstam, Khlebnikov and Cernuda are my poets.

This expansive book covers almost all areas of physics. It has incredible detail often doing full derivations with calculus. To facilitate this there are also many examples. Well-thought problems accompany every chapter, with answers to a few. This book gives an incredible introduction to physics if taught properly, and can also act as a reference after the introductory course.

this book is one of the most concise and clearly thought out atlases on histology that I've encountered so far. It is amazingly easy to use and is chock full of only relevent information...no rambling. Three thumbs up!

This book was used with my daughter's American History curriculum. It held her interest and provided her with more than just date recall. I will use it again with my other child.
