very interesting
Patriarch Bortholomew I of Constantinople is a realist leader of the Orthodox Church (not to suggest that the other leaders are unrealistic.) He realizes that everything in the world doesn't fit into easy little boxes and that there are tough challenges facing humanity in general (regardless of religion) and he believes the Orthodox Church in some places can work together with other groups to address these challenges and at other times the Orthodox Church should be the leaders in addressing the challenges.

He speaks of while one doesn't have to agree with or believe what other religions believe that you must at least realize their right to believe and shelter and protect them from the persecution of others. He addresses fanaticism (both religious and secular nationalistic), drugs, AIDS, natural preservation, etc. Patriarch Bartholomew has revealed to the world that Orthodoxy is and has always been a very "eco-friendly" religion, one that has disdain for overdevelopment and the abuse of the planet and its natural resources.

The book covers a very wide array of topics, but shows a balanced, traditional, yet forward looking Orthodox Christian perspective on the challenges specific to the Orthodox Church and to the world in general.

The Contemporary Challenge of Modernist Theology
Published in Hardcover by University of Wales Press (March, 1999)
Author: Paul Badham
Amazon base price: $49.95
Average review score:

An Exciting Restatement of Theology for the Contemporary Wor
Professor Badham has written a vital and impressive account of the importance of the liberal Christian tradition and its relevance today. Full of the enthusiasm for which he is reknowned, Badham explores various areas of contemporary belief and life and relates them to classical expressions of Modernist theology. He clearly expresses the case he wishes to make, and the way in which ideas considered outdated a generation ago are now becoming important again and returning as valid answers to today's concerns. Whether one agrees with his conclusions or not, this book should be required reading for anyone interested in the place of Christian theology in the contemporary world.

Contemporary Materialism: A Reader

Fascinating Study/Reference
A fine reader on materilaist philosophy covering lots of ground and giving the patinet reader much to think about (as with most academic literature, the reader must slog through a dense thicket of jargon to get at the substance of the writing). Essays are included by advocates of non-reductive (everything reduces to physics in principal, but "special sciences" are needed to fully explain everyday phenomenon), reductive (everything can & should ultimately reduce to physics), and eliminative materialism (our current vocabulary of mental phenomenon should be completely replaced)as well as several critiques of materialism.

Excellant companion book for practice development
This book is written in an accessible and practical format. It assumes nothing but at the same time treats the reader as an intelligent participant on the journey to understanding evidence based practice.

It is up to date and I was especially impressed with the web address it gives to ensure the reader is kept abreast of any changes since publication.

It systematically explains the need and use of 'evidence', how to find it (the search advice is comprehensive and includes details such as search terms and the best search engines aswell as web addresses) how to evaluate it and also how to act on it.

All in all this book was great, and I would reccomend it to anyone involved in evidence based healthcare practice as it will guide you through the thorniest problems.

An O.K. Book
This book is pretty good. It can get confusing because it is dialog between Elton John, Bernie Taupin, and a interviewer, but it is still a good book and you can learn a lot from it.

A Great Read!
I first read Maxine Hong Kingston's Woman Warrior when I was in 10th grade and I fell in love with it! I am Asian American myself and I could relate to various aspects in the novel. However, a lot of the novel can be confusing so I was not sure if I had gotten enough out of it. So, when I saw this book, I had to buy it! I wanted to know her thoughts and feelings about the book and everything else. I was not disappointed! This was a great supplement to her novels and a great read in general. If you are a fan of Maxine Hong Kingston, this is a definite must have!

Cold Comfort
Paul Kemp's classic of the sometimes forgotten Arctic Convoys during WW2 is still good reading after so many years.

He goes into detail about each convoy including their route of travel, their stops along the way and the dogged German resistance they encountered.

A full chapter is devoted to the often touchy subject that the Arctic Convoy system is now infamous for, that of the PQ17 debacle and the recriminations that still exist today. Many blame high command for the famous scatter order, but as we know the message was misread and the results are tragic. All the while the nation receiving this aid, the USSR, did nothing to help or assist in any way what so ever. In my opinion a very selfish and ungrateful act.

Photos are provided and are well discribed.

The Corinthian Women Prophets: A Reconstruction Through Paul's Rhetoric

Technical
If you have enough technical background into biblical criticism, this book is a treasure trove because Wire looks behind the text to see what the women in Corinth were up to--regardless of Paul's judgement of their activities. Unfortunately, the general reader will quickly become lost.

A Bible for Collectors!
For lovers of T.G. Green's timeless Cornish Kitchen Ware, this book gives interesting information about its history and production. It's a very slim, soft-cover volume and, proportionately, pictures do outweigh the text. However, I have to admit that if there were only pictures to look at that would be enough for me! Atterbury has had access to some of the most comprehensive private collections of Cornish Ware that exist and the photos offer a glimpse into the world of the avid collector. Saying there are more images than text gives the impression that it's only a pretty picture book. Not true! Peter Atterbury has obviously put effort into finding tidbits of history, information on imitators, the other designs T.G. Green produced, Cornish Ware's cultural presence in Britain and insight on its future (yes, there is one!). I love this handy little reference book. It's helped me make up my mind about which pieces to buy and which to leave, and it's feeding my dreams of finding treasures I didn't even know existed before I read the book.
