Beyond the Ridge
I absolutely love this book! My 4 year old son picked it out of the library at random. I believe he was lead to read it. Each time we have children friends who loose a loved one, we give them this book. It helps my children understand death in a very enlightened way.

The Best Book About Loss
Paul Goble's "Beyond the Ridge" is a beautiful, comforting, simple book for children of all ages who have experienced the loss of a loved one.
This book is taken from a Native American story about the death of a woman and her journey beyond the ridge into the realm of spirit. Voices call her, and animals guide her, and the familiar scenery nourishes her as she travels home from the mundane world into the land of her ancestors.
The beautiful illustrations, simple and direct language, and comforting nature of this story encourage us to regard death as a process of adventure into greater territory than our bodies can permit.
I keep copies of this book in paperback to give to friends who have experienced a loss (because I so frequently loaned my own hardback copy that I feared it would break down from overuse.) I replenish my stock by ordering a few copies at a time, and I keep them on my bookshelf to share with others when words fail me. Everyone who has received (or borrowed) this book from me has reported feeling consoled and uplifted - even as they faced the death of their loved one - by the beauty of this simple childrens' book. Adults often become childlike when confounded by grief, and the nature of this book is to approach the issue through simplicity and grace, so it works for all of us.
I never want to be without a copy of this book on hand.

Dealing with death
I used this book to ease my young sons through the deaths of their maternal grandfather and paternal grandmothers about 10 years ago. I found that I was the one gaining great comfort! Unfortunately we are now going through another round of deaths. I ordered 5 copies and have given them to friends and relatives to help ease their pain.

Must Read First
This is an outstanding novel. Shows what happens underneath the badge. This is a "Must Read Book" for anyone wanting to become, or understand, what BEING a police officer means.

I couldn't put this book down.
This is the only book that I could not put down. This book gives insight to how times have changed from the law enforcement of yesterday, to the modern law enforcement of today. This book is a must read by anyone who wants to be an officer or is in love with an officer.

Most realistic depiction of a cops life I've found.
I am a full time police officer and if you want to know what it's like this book will tell you. Does not glorify the job the way most books do. Lets you in to the psyche of the day to day cop. Great job.

An Excellent Book

...This book is mediations on the 22 paths of the Tree ofLife from the Qabbala as represented by the 22 Tarot trumps. Itincludes very nice full color plates of the tarot trumps. Eachmeditation is usually about 3 pages long followed by 2 pages ofcommentary.

This book I think is unlikely to appeal to anyone whodoesn't already have at least a basic understanding of the Qabbala andthe Tarot (ie can you draw the tree of life and do you have the tarotattributions for the most part memorized) but is likely to be enjoyedby those who do.

Second verse from the meditation on Tsaddi (thestar):

Men think they seek me, But it is I who seek them, No otherseeker is there then myself, And when I find mine own, The pain ofquestioning is at an end. The fish graspeth the hook, Thinking tofind food, But the fisherman is the enjoyer of the meal.

First versefrom the mediation on Samekh (temperance):

I AM the support of allthat enter into existence. Upon me all depend. And I fail not. Thishave I declared unto thee in various ways, But listen now to my wordsagain.

Each mediatation is at least several verses long. Here is thebeginning of the commentary on Samekh:

SAMEKH, pronouncedsawmek. Transcribed as "S". The number 60. Meaning: Prop,Support. The Intelligence of Probation or Trial.

The commentary foreach path begins like this and then is followed by specific commentaryon some of the verses from the meditation.

An excellentbook. Recommended for any serious student.

To allow this book out of print is a sin against humanity.
In this simple piece of work the human mind can grasp if not cultivate immortality.

an extraordinary and beautiful book
These meditations on the tarot, are like looking into a deep and still pool, the whole sky is in there. Profoundly resonant.

Boomer Girls!

A Book to share with your best friend!
What a delightful book! I had to get another copy to share with my best friend - I didn't want to lend my copy to anyone! Wonderfully written, with much humor and insight into the daily lives and relationships of single boomers (both female and male). Great common sense advise! A must read for single people of all ages and sexes!

Practical Advice: Straight Up, With a Twist
I loved this book. It's more fun to read than many of the relationship or help books because it's a lot less formal, and the advice is very practical. For instance, Dr. Paul gives some pointers about how to behave in the professional world and he also has some interesting political observations. Since most women tend to be moderate-to-liberal in their views, they'll find themselves agreeing with Dr. Paul. My favorite part of the book is in Part IV: For Women Only, which leads into my second favorite chapter: Sex! Seriously, I like how Dr. Paul serves his advice - straight up, with a twist.

This Isn't for Women Only!
I'm a guy who usually prefers to watch TV or listen to talk shows. It's hard to get me to read a book - in fact, I usually fall asleep during the first couple of paragraphs. But I listen to Dr. Paul's show and my fiancee thought I might like the book, so she got it for me as soon as she found out about it. I actually read it from cover to cover! It reads like the show itself, with a lot of talk between Dr. Paul and his audience, so I found it much easier to read and a lot more enjoyable than the other advice books out there. I also like his angle - he approaches everything honestly and he doesn't have any hidden agendas. He's just trying to help people have successful relationships and he makes it interesting. I would highly recommend this book to guys - even though the title is "Boomer Girls"!

A Must Read for Every New Parent!
Being a new parent, I was worried when my 9 month old had a high fever and a cough that lasted more than a day. The doctor told me to keep my child comfortable and monitor his symptoms. If he did not improve in a few days, I was to call back. I felt helpless. I had collected numerous books about babies and what to expect the first year: but none of these books had the information I wanted to know such as how do I comfort a coughing baby at night. Breaking the Antibiotic Habit is wonderful. I read it from cover to cover the day it arrived. Now I am more confident that I can take care of my child when he is sick. I know what to watch for and can communicate better with my child's pediatrician.

Great Book!
I just happened to glimpse this book at my local library and checked it out. What an informational storehouse! I am the parent of two small children, who just recently have been coming down with coughs, colds, ear infections. Nowhere in any of my "pediatrition handbooks" did I get such an in depth understanding of common childhood problems and how and when antibiotics can help and when they can't. I wish I read this book last winter when I needed the information. I am buying this book and highly reccomend it to all parents. Read it cover to cover!

A must read for parents interested in using less antibiotics
I am a pediatrician and am extremely concerned about antibiotic overusage. This book will help all parents understand the risks and benefits of antibiotic use and give them a greater understanding of when antibiotics should be prescribed for their children. Learn that it is alright to tell your doctor that you'd rather not use medications if they are not absolutely necessary. This book is well written, easy to understand, and a must read for parents. Makes a great gift as well for a new parent! I recommend it highly.

Obscure Town teaches a great lesson for us all
Starting with a strike of the coal miners, the company hires outside thugs, who end up massacring the miners. But this is only the beginning of the blood that made Williamson (a small coal mining town in southern Illinois in the 1920's) Bloody!

The thugs didn't leave. They rather liked having the run of the town. Bootlegging, gang wars, and all [heck] breaks loose.

Its important to remember the context when reading this book--because the author doesn't give you much. The worst race riots in American History happened a few miles away, in East St. Louis, in 1916--a few short years before the time covered in this book. Unions hadn't been legally recognized--that came a few years later, amidst the depression. Coal, and the economy in general, were booming. The stock market was exploding. And the federal government took the position that its role was to foster the wealth of the rich.

Anyone who thinks that political corruption is confined to big cities, hasn't spent much time in small town politics. This book is an eye opener. Of course, anyone who thinks that this sort of corruption is a part of America's long distant past, hasn't been reading the paper much recently. Political shenanigans in down state Illinois are alive and well. Of course, the big economic engine driving the southern Illinois economy today is the prison industry, but that's another book. (see Going Up the River, by Joseph Hallinan, for a description of the same area today, dominated by Tamms Supermax Prison).

Only in America
Williamsburg County had an unbelievable amount of violence, in both variety and magnitude, in such a short period of time. In less than fifty years this one county had labor wars, Ku Klux Klan wars, gang wars, and one of the worst feuds in American history. Paul Angle is a good writer, but that is only an added benefit. Reading the media accounts of these events would be fascinating enough. Anyone interested in a case study of a dysfunctional community should read this book.

First read the book
I write primarily to prevent the interested reader from being influenced by Alan Mills's review. It seems that Alan's review is based on a look at the dustjacket, or perhaps something someone told him while he wasn't exactly paying attention. Had he been listening more closely, he might have learned that Williamson is not a town, but a county. Had he finished Chapter One he might not have missed the central fact that it was not the miners who were killed in what came to be known as the "Herrin Massacre", but the company's mine guards and a group of recent Irish immigrants working the mine during the strike, who surrendered to the union under promise of safe conduct, before being taken to a field and shot by striking miners, who then cut the throats of their victims and urinated on their bodies. It is possible that a reading of the book would have alerted Alan to the fact that in 1922 Williamson County the union was not only well established, but had the support of a majority of the populace, and the collusion of some county officials. It was a combination of public intimidation and bribery that prevented jurors from convicting anyone in the two celebrated murder trials that followed the massacre. I don't understand Alan's point about the federal government fostering the wealth of the rich; worrying about this may be a hobby of Alan's, but the concept has nothing to do with Angle's book, or the events it describes. Those who do go on to read Angle's classic book will find a well-written and exciting account of an extraordinary period of lawlessness in Southern Illinois. It is also well-researched and accurate. Some of the participants in these events later refused to write books of their own, saying that they could never tell the story as well as Paul Angle already had.

The title is a little misleading.
While this book does stress the main idea of indoor growing, it doesn't help when the author tells us to move the plant outdoors in the spring. The lighting requirement for each species is really helpful and the photos are beautiful. The illustrations make repotting easier to do (you can see how the tree is tied to the pot). The care is detailed and quick since you can see at a glance how much watering is needed or when to propagate.n

Great How To Manual for Beginners
Paul Lesniewicz describes the bonsai art with simplicist and skill. This book is full of wonderful photos and great advise.

Good book
This book says everything from how to care for your bonsai, to how to grow bonsai from cuttings and seeds. This is a great book for beginners as well as the experinced grower.

A Great Book on Isiah
I have always dug Isiah Thomas. The Brother overcame alot of Obstacles&still does to this day.he doesn't always get the Credit&Love he so deserves. He was a Great Player.I Loved it when He&The Pistons Beat The Over-Inflated Bulls.ZEKE was always the man.He Played with So Much Heart&Determanation. Now as Coach of The Pacers it will be Interesting to see where the Next Journey Takes Him.I Really Dig the Fact that he is about Black Ownership.it's Time to have a Say on&Off The Court. He has had his Ups&Downs but has still Remained a Class Act.this Book Reflects so Much About this Man.

Excellent biography of Isiah.
I have been a fan of Isiah and the Pistons for a long time now. This was the first biography of Isiah that I have read and I enjoyed it very much. I knew a lot about Isiahs childhood but also found out a lot more reading this book. The writer seems to spend a lot of time discussing Isiahs time with the Raptors, I would have liked to read more about his time with the Pistons. I also would have liked to see a mention of the 70+ students that Isiah put through college out of his own pocket. Overall I really enjoyed this book, if your an Isiah fan you need to pick this one up.

very well written it tells of both the good and bad of a sup
I thought the book was very well written. It allowed the reader to see that Isiah is a superstar that pulled himself up out of poverty and despair, but he is also a human being (which we sometimes forget about star atheletes) with human failings, fears, and needs. I is the best 20 bucks I have spent in a long time. I would suggest to anyone who has ever looked at athletes in a negative light to read this book it details the life of growing up poor and not allowing it to rule your life. Isiah, like so many of our black males in America grew up poor and without his father, but he did not allow himself to wallow in it, and that is a lesson that many of young people need to adhere to.

One of the ways to achieve sustainable growth in any market is a recognisable brand name. While many Western companies have successfully developed international brands, Asian companies have been slow to follow suit. How is it that Asia, a region that has such high brand appreciation, produces so few international brands of its own?

In this groundbreaking book, Asia's leading brand architect addresses this unusual situation, explains the fundamentals of branding and shows how companies can use them to achieve outstanding performance. Containing over 20 case studies of leading Asian and Western brands, this book is packed with illustrative examples, advice and exercises.

Branding in Asia is an invaluable book that is a must for anyone responsible for business growth in the 21st century.

Dr Paul Temporal is Asia's leading expert on brand creation, development and management, having lived in the region for over 14 years. He has worked with leading companies and governments, and is well known his results-oriented and hands-on approach. He is the author of Corporate Charisma.

exceeded my expectations wonderfully
My expectations were mainly about redressing the balance on geographical origins of brand case studies. Our literature suffers from being far too US centric. This imbalance is unfortunate for several reasons including: - living in the US for the last 2 years has taught me how atypical the US consumer is of any other I have met in 25 countries that I have worked - from the oldest brand models (which assumed brands were advertising led) to the newest ebrand models, there's huge share of voice reflecting the culture of corporate America and the case theories of its business schools. These powerful systems shouldn't be unquestioningly exported as being de facto paradigms for local organisational excellence or social value.

My expectations were exceeded because this book - unlike most on the brand which start with chapters on advertising and marketing communications - opens up from the very beginning on the leadership importance of branding. Here we are on pages 1-2: "Strong brands endure many challenges. This is becoming increasingly relevant in an era of unprecedented change, upheaval and uncertainty. This change is strategic, unlike the incremental change of more predictable times, and therefore requires a strategic response. Brand building is exactly such a response. If successful, it can be the strongest weapon in a company's armory and the best guarantee of corporate survival. The challenge that lies ahead is that of change management.

And by page 4, we're invited to join in a cataloguing of worldwide changes to marketing: -the breakdown of market boundaries -globalization and the development of global brands -increasing market fragmentation -product diversity and shorter life cycles -greater customer sophistication -digital business -economic instability and market volatility

So this book flies, and yet at the same time when you read it you will continually pick up useful advice whether your brain is looking for practical or academic stimulation. For example, the book closes with an appendix of very worthwhile brand exercises, and it resonates with case studies, 24 in all. Each case study ends with a summary of that brand's strengths.

This book will be good for you whether this is the first one you read on branding, or as in my case the twenty first, including two of my own. For example, I learnt a lot from Temporal's consistently strong advice on brand values and the way they shape corporate personality on its outside and inside.

Good overview by recognized author
I'll be brief. This book is for readers interested in a good, relatively short, readable and useful book on the basics of Indian-tradition buddhism, which also touches on the confluence of Buddhism and Western philosophy. That said, it is an introductory work, and so it cannot cover everything.

Paul Williams is one of the finest writers on Buddhism and philosophy, and here he has written a wide-ranging book that -- while being devoted to doctrinal and practical and historical matters -- also touches on philosophy. The book is informed by his learning, and that of his co-author too (Tribe is responsible for just the one chapter.) I recommend it, and encourage readers to have a glance at Paul Williams' other books, and those of David Harvey as well.

Incidentally, the best short-and-sweet introduction to Buddhism must surely be Damien Keown's little book entitled Buddhism: A Very Short Introduction. And should the reader want to move to the other extreme and tackle philosophically weightier, cutting-edge topics, he or she should pick up works by Jay Garfield or (especially) George Dreyfus.

Contains the best brief overview of tantric Buddhism
I've only read chapter seven of Williams' "Buddhist Thought," which was actually written by Anthony Tribe. However, on the strength of this one chapter alone, I feel moved to recommend this book. Put simply, chapter seven is the single best brief introductory overview of tantric Buddhism that I have ever encountered. I was stunned by the amount of useful, intelligent, accurate information that was provided in such a short space, especially since this is one of the most misunderstood topics in all of Buddhist Studies. Bravo to Tribe; this chapter alone is probably worth the price of the book, and if the rest of the book is up to this standard, this is a volume of rare excellence indeed.

Best single volume on the history of Buddhist philosophy
Williams trumps his masterful classic "Mahayana Buddhism" with an even better book. This is vastly superior to any previous effort (David Kalupahana, eat your heart out!). Williams has a superb talent for explicating difficulty ideas with clarity and simplicity, and his prose has a pleasant and inviting tone. He is also completely up to date on the state of current specialized scholarship, so even those readers already endowed with a good grasp of the development of Buddhist philosophy will find an abundance of interesting material here. This book is destined to be a classic.
