Quite Simply: The Best Book I have ever read.
Inspirational. Profound. Practical. A companion.

A one page/three-minute read every day. And an opportunity to plumb the depths of what it means to be a man or a woman.

Philosophy has been called: The Queen of all Sciences. These meditations are from the mind of a brilliant philosopher. A great intellect. An extraordinary human being. A man who has used his mind to reason to Truth. A Truth reflected in his personal life. A life that has transcended and soared above personal tragedy, Naziism, Communism, and Modernism.

This book provides the reader with a few minutes each day to reflect on what is most meaningful to each of us: relationships, work, marriage, family, sex, education, success, failure, suffering, tragedy, death, life.

"Prayers and Devotions: 365 Daily Meditations" is a reflection of other writings by John Paul, such as "Fides et Ratio", which is a treatise discussing the interdependence and complementarity of Faith and Technology. "Faith and reason are like two wings on which the human spirit rises to the contemplation of truth; and God has placed in the human heart a desire to know the truth---in a word, to know himself---so that, by knowing and loving God, men and women may also come to the fullness of truth about themselves."

From "Veritatis Splendor": "The splendor of truth shines forth in all the works of the Creator and in a special way in man, created in the image and likeness of God. Truth enlightens man's intelligence and shapes his freedom, leading him to know and love the Lord. Hence the psalmist prays: 'Let the light of your face shine on us, O Lord.'"

And from "Evangelium Vitae": "The Gospel of life is at the heart of Jesus' message. Lovingly received day after day by the church, it is to be preached with dauntless fidelity as 'good news' to the people of every age and culture."

"Prayers and Devotions" capsulizes much of the thought of John Paul. It is a rich treasure with each page providing jewels to be discovered, polished, and reflected upon. A book to be read, enjoyed, shared, and re-read.

A Preface to Sartre

French Philosophy...The Next Generation
If the only thing you read in this book is the first chapter, it will have been worth every penny you spent on it. Dominick LaCapra is merciless in his approach to Sartre's philosophy from the point of view of post-modern textual analysis. The book might also be described as "the student (LaCapra) of the student (Derrida) takes on the professor (Sartre)." But, if that in any way minimizes LaCapra, I would be wrong to suggest it. This generation of French philosophy is out to do nothing less than rewrite all of intellectual history. And LaCapra is one of their foremost spokesmen. This is no small task, the results of which have yet to be seen. LaCapra, in this and other works, makes a formidable argument as to why this needs to be done. And Sartre, of course, is one of the icons that needs to be dealt with. In some ways, this particular book is somewhat unsatisfying. But, it serves to make its point. The battle lines have been drawn. Even Michel Foucault is seen as "the older generation" from this vantage point. Quite interesting, as intellectual works go.

Excellent!
Understanding how presidents make policy decisions in the modern political environment can help us understand the constraints operating serious change. Presidents often feel they have a certain agenda to push through the system: that is why they were elected. However, it is far easier said than done. Instead of coming up with unique ideas to address the problems of the country, a president's staff must choose from among policy ideas that have already been floating around. Presidents are often forced to choose between legislative success and good policy - they usually choose the former at the expense of the latter. Hence the country is stuck with a no-win presidency. This book is well researched through extensive staff intereviews and first hand accounts of the inner workings of many past presidencies. If you have ANY interest in the presidency, this is a definite book to have on your shelf.

Prime Time Law -- a great read!
I read "Prime Time Law" for my Society and Law class at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. It is formatted into essays written on different prime time television shows (i.e. Law & Order, L.A. Law, NYPD Blue, etc.). The book as a whole is an excellent analysis of how law and legal actions are portrayed on the small screen. An exception read for anyone interested in a theoretical analysis of such television programs.

A Must for Learning Theory Construction
This book is a fountain of information for those individuals who wish to learn how to understand and develop theory. It is a "user friendly" guide that takes the reader through the A B C's of theory construction. Written in easily understandable language, this book takes the mystique and fear out of theory building and turns it into child's play. I highly recommend this book for students and other individuals who have an interest in theory construction but are afraid it will be over their heads.

This book can be read in fifteen minutes easily.
This book is truly written for the young reader; however, it can be read and enjoyed by all ages. There is really no new information, but it is treated in a different manner which is appealing. The story is told almost entirely by using almost all simple sentences so that is can be easily understood by the age group for which it is intended.

It is refreshing to have the author refer to Prince William's life as "an inspirational life" which it is when one stops and thinks about all the unfortunate circumstances he has endured in his sixteen and a half years of life.

The author succeeds in getting her point across. Any individual who is five years of age and can read will be able to read and to understand this book. The words which the author thinks a young reader may not know are written in bold print and are explained very simply in the glossary found on page 30.

One also get the Web site for the publishers from which one can download a free screen saver. also, there are two Internet Sites given for Prince William with which you are probably acquainted if you have always read about the young prince. All pictures are in color.

This is a delightful paperback book consisting of thirty-two pages.

Passionate thinker for hope and solidarity with the spirit
It's incredible no one takened the time to review this magnum opus of one of the most important committed thinkers of our time. Bloch's life itself well traversed almost a century, seeing himself and participating in the early innovative artistic movements,Expressionism, the plays of Brecht,Schoenberg's 12 Tone Dodecaphonic means. He also carried diatribes with the likes of Gyorgy Lukacs, as well as writers he admired Anna Siegel. Utopia is a realm that never seems to go away. For Bloch it was a way of gaining distance with the world,in fashioning a path toward it yourself. He said someplace that we all inhabit our own durational frames, and that we develop, or come to see our horizons not simultaneously as we have been taught to believe. This massive three-volume work is a mere encyclopedia tracing where mankind has found its horizon, sometimes placing it theri aritficially, as in art. Goethe Faust has a prominent place here as well as early secular religions of the world, how each shares this vision of Utopia Bloch so impassioned voice seeks. Marx is here as well, and it was Bloch who for want of a better term, introduced the warmer side of the human spirit to into Marxist discourse. Bloch, as Adorno,Horkheimer, even Lukacs, were not really political animals, nor consummate players, so they each saw the Soviet Union as some hope, less Adorno, who was skeptical of everything. The early religious leader Thomas Munzer, Luther's arch enenmy during the burgeoning Reformation and the Peasant Wars is also a point of reference for Bloch. And music makes an entrance, however Bloch really never got to know modernist repertoire, his thoughts are abssorbed with the classics, Mozart,Beethovem Bruckner and Wagner all have places in his Utopian edifice.
