The best iSeries book ever!
Did you ever wonder about why IBM is pushing JAVA? Worried about the future of the AS/400? Concerned about personal computers or PC servers that have faster cpu speeds than an iSeries? You must read this book then! Only Frank Soltis could provide the highly readable in depth analysis of the internal architecture that appears to becoming the basis for the entire eServer line of computers to be built by IBM in the future.

For many of us who have invested heavily in the AS/400 and are worried about its future this book should put those fears to rest and demonstrate clearly how this amazing machine and its even more incredible layered operating system will be the basis for IBM's future!

Bob C.

A must read for AS/400 developers
This is your chance to find out what really is going on inside your AS/400. Everything you have always wanted to know. You won't find this out from anywhere else. It will satisy the appetite of even the most technically minded. There's even an historical perspective - the AS/400 really does come from an alternative universe. Fantastic.

The Insomniac's Dictionary: The Last Word on the Odd Word

Authors: Paul Hellweg and Joan Leigh Herder
Amazon base price: $19.95

Browser's paradise
I can't say how many times I've flipped through the pages of this volume. Hellweg has collected a bevy of wonderful words, and has them categorized into fun chapters. You can be astounded by what words exist, and then have fun attempting to force the most unwieldy ones into conversations.

Perfect for word-lovers
Containing weird, wacky, wonderful words of all sorts, the Insomniac's Dictionary is out-of-this-world for those sleepless nights. It's got love and sex words, fear words, food words, word words, any kind of word you could possibly imagine. (Did you know there is a word for "the fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of your mouth"? It's in there!) It is very entertaining, humorous, and great fodder for party conversation. :)

International Copyright: Principles, Law, and Practice

Complete review of Copyrigth
This is not a book for the average reader. Although anyone can appreciate the exquisite writing of Pr Goldstein, this book is tailored for lawyer who are interested in Copyright and international trade issues.

Starting with a brief history, the author asserts that international Copyright has brought the two existing systems of law (the Author's right and the Copyright) closer together. He then goes on with a detailed point-by-point analysis of the right and privileges granted by the numerous treaties. The second part of book is an analysis of the protection of foreign work in the US and the protection of US works abroad.

This book is truly a reference for anyone having to deal with the Berne Convention, WIPO Copyright treaty and TRIPS agreement. The appendix contains full text version of all those agreements, plus many more.

World's leading copyright expert
This is an indispensable one-volume reference for practitioners and scholars of international copyright. It is a unique synthesis of copyright practice and law, taking into account the Bern Convention of 1989, the TRIPs Agreement concluded five years later, and the advent of the Internet. National copyright rules on protectible subject matter, ownership, term, and rights are covered in detail and compared from country to country, as are topics on moral rights and neighboring rights. Separate sections cover such important topics as territoriality, national treatment and choice of law, as well as the treaty and trade arrangements that underlie substantive copyright norms.

"Paul Goldstein's book is an amazingly complete analysis of copyright worldwide. It covers exhaustively not only national laws but also international treaties and their application in practice. This impressive volume reflects the vast erudition of its author and will be of precious use not only to practitioners but also to researchers and students." --Arpad Bogsch, Former Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization

"Professor Paul Goldstein's presentation and subtle analysis of all international conventions in the field of copyright and neighboring rights, including TRIPs and European directives, is a pioneering masterpiece. It is brilliantly written and thoroughly structured, and will soon become an indispensable research tool for the entire international community."--Gerhard Schricker, Managing Director of the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Patent, Copyright, and Competition Law

International Money and Finance
Published in Hardcover by Blackwell Publishers (July, 1900)
Authors: C. Paul Hallwood, Ronald MacDonald, and Paul Hallwood
Amazon base price: $81.95
Average review score:

A comprehensive study of the international financial system
This book is excellent for challenging undergraduate courses as well as graduate courses in international finance. It has a unique mixture of theory, evidence and institutions. The theory is mainly delivered to you using a few equations and helpful diagrams. The "evidence" part accompanies each theoretical offering and usually takes the form of reporting the structure and results of empirical tests. As far as I know this is the only international finance text that gives so much insight into the econometrics of international finance. It is well known that MacDonald is an international expert in the econometrics of international finance, and the bibliography indicates that he has worked quite a lot with Hallwood investigating various propositions concerning the behaviour of pegged exchange rate regimes. One of the best features of the book is the way that the theory and evidence is used in the discussion of international institutions such as the operation of fixed and floating exchange rates, currency unions and development of the international financial architecture. There is also an extensive discussion of the main features of the history of international monetary systems. Finally the authors have made an effort to bring in some discussion of international finance in east Asia. Probably the book could have benefitted from more discussion of regional issues such as these. Even so there is quite a good theoretical discussion of dollarization in Latin America.

A leading text has just been updated.
We have tried hard to keep abreast of the literature in all of the main fields of international finance - theory, evidence, institutions and policy. As we believe that scholarship requires the scholar to know the sources of ideas - every idea having its own author(s), we have not spared the student the bother of knowing about the researchers and the generation of ideas in international money and finance. We cover 'recieved wisdom' as well as the important new developments in the field. The latter include such diverse subjects as theoretical innovations in the general equilibrium theory of exchange rate determination, explanations for the relative immobility of long-term capital alongside highly mobile short-term capital, the behavior of exchange rates within target zones, theories of the best course of financial integration of transition economies and developing countries into the circuit of international capital, explanations for why real exchange rates often diverge for long periods from purchasing power parity, how misinformed speculation and speculative bubbles can cause floating exchange rates to be unstable, new successful empirical methods for forecasting exchange rates, and a reassessment of the performance of the gold standard in the 19th century and its role in the Great Depression. This textbook-monograph - written for smart undergraduate and gradute students, is widely used on three continents (the Chinese translation appeared in 1996). And we know that is it used for course work at Ivy League universities in the US, and many universities throughout Europe.

International Relations Theory: Realism, Pluralism, Globalism
Published in Paperback by MacMillan Pub Co (January, 1993)
Authors: Paul R. Viotti and Mark V. Kauppi
Amazon base price: $51.00

An Excellent Graduate Level Textbook
Kauppi and Viotti's work gives a comprehensive comparison between the contending theories of International Relations. Each section is followed by key readings which helps clear any misunderstanding and introduces to the student some of the finest texts supporting each perspective. Truly informative, great book. Recommended to Political Science graduate students everywhere.

Basic about realism, pluralism, globalism
A very good comparative analysis of the international relations theory. The authors first introduce each theory and briefly characterize it, describe characteristic authors and explain the advantages and disadvantages of realists, pluralist and globalist. Following each brief review of a theory are a number of essays of typical authors. I personally used this book to prepare for my pre-exams in political science and there's nothing that comes close to it

For moms and dads and anyone else new to the Web
Without a doubt, one of the best ways for non-technical folks to learn about the web and the internet. I'm personally opposed to labeling anyone unfamiliar with computers, a dummy. This book teaches by using mostly graphic imagery which clearly illustrates the concepts being discussed. A definate add-on for anyone getting, or giving a new computer, Mac or PC.

Impressive
I'm quite impressed and satisfied with this book and with the entire Simplified series. This book presents an excellent introduction to and overview of the internet and the world wide web. It is very accessible to beginners and provides useful information for more experienced users. For visual learners (like myself), the illustrations are a great help.

It's challenging to take a complex subject and express it simply, clearly, concisely, and comprehensively. This book meets the challenge.

Other books in the Simplified series are listed on Amazon.com under the author name Ruth Maran. A similar series (which I also enjoy very much) by the same author is the Teach Yourself Visually series.

A Very Helpful Work
There have been a number of helpful New Testament introductions written for the Evangelical community, including the older volume by Guthrie and the newer work by Carson, Moo and Morris. And there have been many fine NT theologies as well. Volumes by Ladd, Caird and Guthrie, among others, have served the Evangelical community well.

This new volume offers a bit of both worlds: introductory matters, as well as theological concerns. Written for students and lay people, it will serve as a good intermediary text. Advanced students may find it wanting in areas, but it does offer, if in brief form, some of the latest scholarship on the NT.

The three authors all teach interpretation at American seminaries. They have all produced a number of outstanding works on aspects of the NT. Green for example has authored the well received New International Commentary on Luke; Meye Thompson wrote on 1-3 John for the IVP New Testament Commentary Series, and Achtemeier did the Hermeneia commentary on 1 Peter.

This volume is especially good on Jesus and the Gospels. Indeed, along with sections on introductory matters and Acts, it takes up the first half of the book. The remainder of the book offers brief chapters on the other 22 books of the New testament. Each chapter concludes with a short bibliography of recent works, usually half of which are commentaries.

The chapters highlight the usual concerns: matters of authorship and historical setting, theological themes and literary issues. Photos, maps and supplementary text blocks all contribute to a highly usable and informative volume.

The study is neither too technical nor too detailed to be lost on a lay person or beginning student. Yet it is scholarly and up-to-date enough to be of use to more advanced students as well. As with all theological works, there will be some areas of disagreement.

For example, since none of the three authors comes from a Reformed perspective (not that they need to), there are areas in which one might beg to differ. Perhaps the most obvious example of this arises in the chapter on Romans. One passage in which quite a lot of ink has been spilled is Romans 7 and the identity of the "I" who struggles with sin.

While a number of options present themselves, many argue that Paul is describing his own experience as a believer (and by implication that of all other believers). Pick up any 10 good commentaries on Romans, and perhaps as many as half will argue this position Yet in this volume the authors simply dismiss such an interpretation as "impossible".

One would have thought that careful scholars such as Cranfield, Murray, and Dunn, for example, would not embark upon such impossible hermeneutical assignments!

But leaving aside the occasional theological quibble, this volume well serves its purpose as an introductory text on basic NT matters. Others may go into more background detail (such as the volume by Carson, Moo and Morris, or more fully examine the theological or literary aspects (Ladd, or Caird - in addition to his NT Theology, see his invaluable Language and Imagery of the Bible), but this volume will fill a niche and should enjoy a long run with students of the NT.

A spendid treatment of New Testament Literature
This book is a bible student's dream come true. It is written in an engaging manner. The scholarship is superb. The book's structure, theological content, and balanced treatment, make it a valuable resource for New Testament Study. At a time when there is a proliferation of books and monographs on biblical subjects, Achtemeier, Green, and Thompson, produce a jewel for the serious student of scripture. This book is destined to become an instant classic.

DDC Introduction to Computers and the Internet for Seniors
I will be teaching seniors and other beginners how to use the computer. I have looked at other "senior" books and this is the clearest and least cluttered book! I have written my own manual and this book does so much more I will use it instead. THanks!

finally something understandable
It is nice to finally have a book that a person can understand. Most computer books are scary to open, but this book was not only beneficial, but I could understand the language, and was even interesting to just read..i finally found a book that I even found my illiterate computer husband, except for solitare, was reading. He gets almost hysterical turning the computer on, but now I may be sorry, if he reads this book.

Investing in a Post-Enron World
Investing in a Post-Enron World is a truly unique book that gives you a contemporaneous insight into stock valuation. The author presents off balance sheet financing, dividend pay-out policies, 401K pension plan administration, executive compensation, and much more in a comprehensive analysis that forms a solid basis for stock valuation. I think this book should be a required reading for anyone with a profound interest in finance.

A Savvy Book on Intelligent Investing
I heartily recommend this book to anyone seeking a well-informed opinion on investing in today's markets.

Mr. Jorion is unquestionably a great storyteller. Yet, he also brings a wealth of knowledge to the table. The author clearly understands the implications of the Enron debacle for our capital markets. Fortunately for us, Mr. Jorion also shares his seasoned understanding of how to invest intelligently in these uncertain times.

Irony in the Fourth Gospel

A Groundbreaking Literary Treatment (redux)
Dr. Duke, working under the mentoring of Alan Culpepper, has written a concientous, thorough, and fascinating analysis of a key pattern in the John's Gospel: Irony. This popular literary device permeates the fourth gospel, and is fundamental to the dualistic themes found throughout the work. Dr. Duke's research provides an essential schematic whereby the novice or the scholar can navigate the complexities of this gospel. Dr. Duke looks at the book with the eye of a trained scholar and the heart of a lyrical poet.
