Touching!
Where I come from, such candor is rare. Thank you for touching a chord deep inside. And strummed it so expertly. I am still humming and burning. Internally. I mean, not lilterally. You found the real me.

Better do your homework
This book is a great example of Murray's witty and lucid writing style. However, you'd better read up on your Mann, Hemingway, and Faulkner before you read this.

Put on your time-annhialating hats, kids
This is a complicated essay; like the previous reviewer mentioned it might be a good idea to have some Thomas Mann and Hemingway under your belt.

That being said, this is the most witty, insightful, coherent and thought-provoking essays I have ever read. Not only is Murray's style pure thrilling joy to absorb, but his examinations into aesthetics, the blues, tragedy, and improvisation are masterful. This book entirely changed the way I view the role of literature and art in life.

That is about all I can say. Murray knits a view of confrontation with life in art that nimbly leaps between Hemingway and Duke Ellington. I found his conclusions about the role of the blues and books in life endlessly compelling. I consider this book to be a treasure, from one of the unsquarest cats I've ever read.

An excellent review of the anthropological canon
This book is an excellent text on which to base an upper level undergraduate introduction to the history of anthropological theory, although most teachers will want to supplement it with additional readings. The introductory chapter essays provide interesting and helpful biographical data on each author, as well as material historically situating the textual excerpts offered. While the selections are generally well-chosen as to importance, brevity and ease of reading, some do not necessarily represent an author's best or most important work (e.g. the selection offered for A.L. Kroeber). The text covers basic trends in anthropological theory up to about the 1970's, and includes many historically significant authors who might otherwise be "written out" in favor of more recent theoretical stars. While I would not recommend this as the *only* reading for a theory class, it does a great job of introducing students to the history of anthropological theory, while leaving the teacher room to decide how and where to supplement it with additional (or more recent) readings.

Seminal Reading for all social scientists
This book is an insightful compilation of all the groundbreaking researchers in Anthropology. By reading this book, one gains a comprehensive understanding of the evolution of anthropological theory and praxis. This book contains valuable biographical information as well as selected works from each of the persons profiled. It is a must read for anyone interested in the world of anthropology.

Short and Sweet
If you are looking for a concise, quick introduction to the history of anthropological theory, then I highly recommend this book. No other short survey of its history comes close to scope and content of Erickson and Murphy's book. The companion book of readings is also very good. I only give it 4 stars because of its brevity, you can't go too deep when you have to cover so much ground and keep the book a reasonable length.

An excellent introduction to the history of Anthropology
I found this to be a highly readable introductory text, which outlines all the major developments in anthropology, from antiquity to postmodernism. The work is, in my opinion, suitable for anyone interested in the broad study of human origins, and of the societies and cultures humans create. I would DEFINITELY buy this book if I were taking an introductory course. A real undiscovered gem for most readers!

a history of Romania
well-documented; should have dedicated more space for the communist regime crimes. Overall, an interesting lecture.

Excellent resource, very thorough -- Treptow is amazing!
I have read several books written or edited by Kurt Treptow, editor of this one, and I am more impressed after each one. I don't want to sound like a groupie, but this guy amazes me: he has the mind of a scholar, but the talent of a popular writer. That, and he provides some of the best, most thorough, most accurate bibliographies I have ever encountered. Just phenomenal talent!

A History of Romania takes us from the pre-historic people of the region all the way to post-revolutionary Romania. A collaborative effort, some sections shine more than others, but, overall, the quality of authorship is high and the accuracy of information is impeccable. There are quite a few maps, diagrams, drawings, and photographs throughout the book, which greatly add to its interest and readability.

Granted, the price is kind of steep for the average person with only a passing interest in Romania. However, for anyone who wants an in-depth study, this is the definitive book. I highly recommend it.

A Primer on the Power and Personality of the Holy Spirit
When Paul Yonggi Cho speaks about the Holy Spirit, I listen.

As senior pastor of the world's largest Christian Church (more than 850,000 members), and founder and prayer warrior at Prayer Mountain, Seoul, South Korea, Cho knows about prayer and the Holy Spirit.

The book covers a lot of ground, much of it introductory: Who is the Holy Spirit, the baptism, the gifts, and the evidence. Interspersed are personal stories and testimonies which are, in Cho's unique style, disarming, humbling, and heart-warming.

More than anything, Cho's heart for God and love for people raditates through the book.

The mature believer and the Cho student may want to skip this book and buy "Apocalyptic Prohecy", "Prayer the Brings Revival", or "The Fourth Dimension" for meatier study. But if this is your first foray into Pastor Cho's work, enjoy!

Five Plus for Dr. Cho
Dr. Cho, my spiritual mentor, has written another great book which is birthed out of his deep relationship with the Lord. I am always amazed at the profound simplicity of this great man of God. If you want to experience the power of the Holy Spirit, then this book is a must to read over and over again.

Hot! International

Don't leave home without it.
From "Hello, how are you? You're very attractive." to "Why don't you move in here? I have lots of room." (or "Don't call me, I never want to see you again.") negotiating a relationship in a foreign language can be tricky. Hot! International is a big help. It covers the your-place-or-mine basics, health concerns such as VD and pregnancy and the big questions of who is going to do what to whom and saying thank you for it afterwards. If your idea of a great trip is to add a foreign lover to your life list, then this book can be a big help.

Phrases are given in English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portugese and Czech. This deserves a place beside your standard phrase books.

Excellent Book!
My boyfriend is German & I'm American. I took 2 years in High School & 5 in college, he also took English in High School & college...but this is the stuff they don't teach you in school! With this book, we were able to speak each other's sexual language, not just each other's sexual BODY language. It's in English, French, German, Spanish, Portugese, Italian and I can't remember what else (oops:). Fantastic for anyone, including sections on both hetero- and homosexual lingo, "group" activities, safe-sex, greetings, getting-to-know-you stuff, and more. You WON'T be disappointed. This book is great fun!
