Great beginners' book
To be honest, I was expecting a lot more from Berklee, and my expectations were probably unreasonable. I was expecting a more in-depth study of music theory and chord progressions, when what you end up with is a smattering of useful chords and simple lines to echo. The book is great for musicians that want to pick up a little keyboard on the side of their main instruments. However, for quasi-classically trained (Suzuki) pianists, the book is only an unneccessary reference (nice to have, but not essential). I'm planning on looking into the three-volume modern method from Berklee to see if it's more satisfactory (I'm betting that it will be).

This book makes me want to travel to the Canary Islands after cancelling one trip for lack of interest, and even venture off Tenerife to try a couple of the other islands. This is a winner. From Accomodations to Youth Hostels (there aren't any at present) and point by point, this is the book to buy. Each island is detailed for you to decide if it's worth a separate trip. Where to go - what to do - eating out - travel tips - and Berlitz"s language aids.

Not a guide as much as a cute little book
This is a good book if you dream of going to Provence or if you've been and you're looking for something to remind you of the trip. However, if you're looking for a guide book that'll actually get you through Provence, this one lacks the depth you'll need... you'd be better off getting one of the bigger Let's Go or Fodor's guides.

Great planes, a little hard for me
I'm the mother of a 7 year old who is becoming obsessed with paper planes. He's had me making him the planes from this book. He loves them.

I only deducted one star because some of the planes were too hard for me to figure out.

And yes, they do fly!

You'll need this book...
This book is a valuable tool for those taking the FTCE.It reviews every competency you'll need to know for this exam, including a neat summary of the basic psychological theories at the beginning of the book. I took this exam in 1998 without any prep book like this available and I did pass the exam. This book tells you the pass score needed. At the outset I was thrown by the questions, but the strategy I adapted apparently payed off.Going in, all I had to prepare me was the skimpy test booklet provided by the State of Florida certification division. But if you're really serious about getting through this exam at the first go, then this book is a must. I am now using this book as a tutoring aid when I coach others for this rather quirky exam. One quick hint for test-takers: this particular exam's questions are best answered by the process of elimination.Good luck!

Between Silver and Guano: Commercial Policy and the State in Postindependence Peru
Published in Paperback by Princeton Univ Pr (May, 1991)
Author: Paul Gootenberg
Amazon base price: $14.95
Average review score:

How do you build up a national state among "non-nationals"?
How do you build up a nation state when the political independence is brought by foreign armies (that was the case of Peru)? and when the local elites didn't have enough sense of nation before that (but corporatism, oh yes, they had so)?. And how the struggles between the local key players (the ancient corporations from the times of viceroys) will determine, finally, the kind of development the country will have when entering in the international trade arena?.

The theme of this book is peruvian history, from 1820 to 1860 - topic which could be of your interest or could not be -, but what makes this work very valuable is his method to search and check the answers to these previous questions, with the peruvian case.

This book shows that with no strong national state institutions and frequent elections, the most likely way of popular participation in politics is having frequent civil (and secession) wars, and that with permanent bankruptcy - because there was no sound tax system -, the fragile national state will adopt the policies fitted to the elites who pay the war's bills (in the peruvian case, was the monopolist corporation of Lima's merchants). But this book shows too that after 1840, with the bankruptcy of the special interests - who could make money with unstable governments and more unstable public policies and with no good environtment for trade and investment? -, the peruvian state bureaucracy could chose more open markets policies, restoring its independence, military power against regional militia, and setting the terms of negotiation with every regional elite. Finally, the peruvian national-state, was a consequence of the fatigue of civil wars funders (they learned this is not the best way to protect their interests), and a profitable alliance between bureaucrats and special interests groups, which was funded by the rich trade of guano, after 1840.

The analysis Mr. Gootenberg makes is so careful anyone interested in theory of games and strategic planning could make every key player's matrix of threats and opportunities, and make them evolving, along key facts and key events. Finally, seems that the peruvian national state was borne from a Nash equilibrium, gotten after a great waste of people dead, economic resources, and time - above time -. That national state was not democratic, nor its policies were planned to improve the condition of the poorer and peasants - even though made free to all black slaves in Peru and ended the colonial taxes on native peasants -. But was the beginning, a feasible project, a common enterprise for the politics of minorities that was, then, peruvian politics. Between 1851 - when we got the national-state and the wreckage that came when the pacific war (1879-1883) began against Chile, happens other story, that this book outlines.

Interesting and thought-provoking book, with a master analysis of every key player's behavior. And to me - i am a peruvian citizen -, a great book of peruvian history.

Beyond Freedom

Flight of the Mariner's gripping sequel.
Sequel to "Flight of the Mariner", this book continues the tale of David Shaw, and tells of his search for the woman he loves in an alien world. Similar to the Martian series by Edgar Rice Burroughs, Paul Ware's story is full of cliff-hangers, and never fails to keep its audience gripped, with fabulous battles and vivid descriptions. It's the typical hero vs evil formula, but with enough twists and sub-plots to make it special.

Stroyteller? Absolutely!
Paul Auster? Well known author, a novelist. No, it's better if we inspect this writer without any restrictions. Because he is unmeasureable. Essays and fiction. Beyond the Red Notebook: Essays on Paul Auster, this is one of the best essaycollections i've ever read. Although it is not a fiction, you can still notice that he is discussing about the same problems as he does in he's novels. All these essays are each one involved with a self-seeking. Like Auster is trying to prove that his standpoints in novels are true. I would compare Auster with Susan Sontag. Sontag's style is similar to Auster's one. So this book is a good one in two aspects: composition and the essays itself. So, why I put only 4 stars. Well, it always seems to me in every book that there could be something more. But this is a great book, no doubt about that.

Bible Prophecy: Questions and Answers

Asking The Right Questions
The question and answer format of BIBLE PROPHECY helps to keep the reader focused. Of course the quality of the reading experience depends heavily on the relevance of the questions. In this respect I think that the book is a success. It is also written in a very readable style. Erb's background includes jobs as a teacher, writer, preacher and churchman for the Mennonite Church. His interpretation of prophecy reflects his training.
