Avrich is the premier historian of Anarchism
This history of the Haymarket affair traces the lives and development of the principles in the drama from their earliest exposure to the labor movement, socialism, and anarchism and up to the tragic bombing in which they were falsly accused and ultimately executed. What makes Avrich special is in the way he does not shy away from the uncomfortable truth while strill retaining the idealistic values of the players in this tragedy. He does not portray the men who were executed after the Haymarket bombing as lambs, but demonstrates their intense, often militant struggle. It was a violent time. At the same time, he explains the motivations of these men, especially Albert Parsons, in such a way that one wonders what other course could they have taken. The stirring explorations of Parsons' development from civil war vet to committed advocate of the working class does not idolize the man, but casts as heroic the struggle for justice and the loving and rich culture that produced the early figures of Anarchism. Avrich is the most well known and effective mainstream historian of Anarchism. His book on Sacco and Vanzetti is even more powerful than the Haymarket book, and his Anarchist Portraits and Anarchist Voices are essential primary sources

Hazardous Materials: Regulations, Response, & Site Operatio
This was the best overall text on the subject of hazardous materials. The book thoroughly covers some very complex topics in a very easily understood format. The author uses clear examples to illustrate points. The chapter review exercises and questions provide an excellent summary of the main points. As a teacher, I plan to use the book in many of my courses. I would encourage the author to consider publishing other manuals for use with the main text such as a student or instructor guide.

Psychoneuroimmunology 101.
I have just finished reading Dr. Martin's book and found it fascinating and very well-written. The principle argument or theme is that disease and death seldom have single causes. There is a link between what goes on in the mind, and what goes on in the body. This particular branch of study is known as "psychoneuroimmunology".
Contemporary physicians and scientists frequently dismiss the idea that the mind has any marked effect on physical health. The fact is that most people, doctors and scientists included, find it inherently easier to believe in the reality of apparently simple physical causes of disease (such as cholesterol, salt, smoking, lack of exercise, bacteria or viruses) than to accept that mere thoughts can affect our health. There are extremists on either side of the spectrum; those that claim that the mind/emotions have no influence whatsoever, and the New-Age gurus who believe that adopting certain thinking patterns can prevent cancer!
Dr. Martin's familiarity with well-documented research, authoritative commentary, and overall witty style combine to present a very convincing argument for a middle ground conclusion: that the relationships between mind, body and disease work both ways. The mind affects the body and hence physical health (negatively AND positively). Conversely, physical health affects the mind and hence our thoughts, emotions and behaviour.
Throughout the book, he alludes to examples in literature to illustrate these links between psychological factors and disease. These illustrations help to convey complex scientific ideas in a recognizable form, and I found this feature very innovative and effective... lifting the weight from some very heavy ideas, and making me say, "Of course, I get it now."

There is an extensive discussion of that modern-day source of malady... STRESS. How does "stress" make us more susceptible to breakdown and disease? Interesting sections on the Type A personality (typified by free-floating hostility, aggressiveness, competitiveness, impatience) and how it lends itself to increased risk of heart disease. Also, a section on the Type C personality (typified by suppression of strong emotions, avoidance of conflict, compliance with the wishes of others) and how it lends itself to increased risk of cancer.
The last chapter is marked heavily with Dr. Martin's thoroughgoing support of Darwinism/evolution. I differ with him on several points. But that does not take anything away from the overall value of the book. Fellow creationists be patient.

A fascinating book! Incidentally, my copy is old, and bears the original title, which was "The Sickening Mind".
Read the newer "Healing Mind" and find out for yourself just how appropriate both titles actually are!

Excellent resource on how herbs work as tonics.
This book not only offers a great overview of ginseng research, but Bergner goes out of his way to explain how to purchase ginseng, other tonic herbs, and Chinese patent medicines. In fact, there is a chapter on explaining constitutional medicine and the terms "excess" and "deficiency." Wow! So helpful to us folks who are unfamiliar with these concepts. Bergner's stories of people who have suffered early aging effects from taking too much ginseng over many years is absolutely fascinating and informative. Robyn Klein, editor of The Herbalist

A surprisingly excellent scientific work
This is not just another shopping-list of chemicals but an outstanding dissertation of the basis for trace elements and other micro nutrients in our diet and the reasons for the universal lack thereof. Besides its value as a guide to nutrition, the book provides insights into our biological origins, as a species, and shows how far from our "natural home" we have strayed.

Health, Race and German Politics between National Unification and Nazism, 1870-1945
Published in Paperback by Cambridge University Press (December, 2002)
Author: Paul Weindling
Amazon base price: $65.00

Dangers of a Technocratic Elite
Paul Weindling's work will take it's place with the best descriptions of pre-Nazi and Nazi policies leading to genocide. But be prepared to have your preconceived notions challenged. Weindling clearly portrays pre-Nazi Germany as a nation already in the grips of a racist and social elitist ideology-an ideology searching for the perfect man. He traces the growth of a national health movement bent on remolding man into the image of the bureaucratic technotronic elites which managed the programs. Ideas of Racial and Social Health merge with the slippery slop of Social Darwinianism to produce one of the most frightening pictures of modern history. As German researchers and medical officials plunged headlong on their reckless pursuit for perfection, no stone was left unturned. Every avenue of approach, no matter how strange or twisted, was explored. Every institution in Germany was gradually brought under the total manipulation of government health and social bureaucrats determined to transform society. By the 1920s the machinery was in place which would allow the Nazis to rule as they did. This work is not for the timid reader. It is a serious piece of scholarship and must reading for anyone trying to understand how average Germans could submit to the Nazi horror.

A Foundation Builder
This book started a turning point in my Christian walk. It is firmly grounded in Biblical truths and it is easy to understand. Each chapter explained a common misconception or problem and what the Bible has to say about it. Although the last section of the book discussing the different disorders wasn't what I was needing, the first 2 sections really hit home. As a new Christian, it layed a foundation that was solidly based on scripture. It dispelled misconceptions that I had and even brought up a few that I didn't know I had! I believe that this book has something for everyone. This a book that I will refer back to often.

Theological/Archaeological Essays Honor H.Hummel
Colleagues and students of Dr. Hummel here provide a worthy collection in honor of this fine teacher, scholar and colleague.

Dr. Hummel is well-known among those of us who experienced him as a teacher to be passionate about what he was talking about. This is reflected in the variety of essays here collected honoring his exegesis and theology.

Especially fine is the Hosea article by Schrieber as well as the "Cup of God's Wrath" survey by Raabe. The war chronology by Symeonoglou was fascinating.

Many fine gems here gained by reading this fine remembrance of a fine Christian.
