Pugin: A Gothic Passion
Published in Hardcover by Yale Univ Pr (July, 1994)
Authors: Clive Wainwright, Paul J. Atterbury, and Victoria and Albert Museum
Amazon base price: $70.00
Average review score:

A key source in the foundation of arts and crafts
This book takes the reader back to the early 19th century and the beginning of the Gothic Revival tradition. We learn how this tradition was a reaction against the industrial revolution and the secularization of society. Pugin reacted against this movement by calling our attention back to the Middle Ages, a world of great faith, intellectual and spiritual integration, and hand craftsmanship. The great pioneers of the Arts and Crafts Movement (Ruskin, Morris, McIntosh, Stickly, Wright) all owe Pugin a great debt of gratitude. The multiple authors deal with various aspects of this multifaceted design genius. Various chapters deal with his early life (he was designing furniture for Windsor Castle at age 15, designing the interiors of the Houses of Parliment in his early 20's!), architecture, furniture, metalwork, ceramics, graphics, etc. The person who kept coming to my mind as I have been reading this book is Mozart. Both were child prodigies. Both were prolific. Both were perfectionists. Both died young. The book is lavishly illustraited with color and black and white photos. The text is well written. The linkage between text and illustraition is consistent and clear. Anyone who is interested in the Arts and Crafts tradition owes it to themselves to read this book. To ignore the contributions of Pugin to the developement of the Arts and Crafts tradition is like building a castle in the air with no foundation.

A "brainstormer" for age 4-6
This workbook consists of 70 exercises on thinking skills in various aspects, such as visual discrimination, problem solving, understanding relationship, inference, sequencing, storytelling and rhyming words. My 5 years old girl needs me to explain the exercise to her, and it gives her some brain storming. As what the editor written: If a child has grasp of how to think, school success and even success in life will become more assured. However not in ONE workbook, the Gifted and Talented Workbooks have some more titles on maths, reading, science and language arts.

A better handbook than a textbook
This book is well written and quite complete. That said, I was disappointed in that many key results described in the book are given without derivation, making this book more appropriate for someone who is already familiar with the subject matter. This is somewhat mitigated by the fact that the author provides a very complete set of references (the bibliography alone is 47 pages long). If one is willing to look up the original references for topics of particular interest, this book can serve as an excellent guidebook. If not for the references, which I have found to be quite useful, this book would rate only 3 stars.

A must have for any Keating fan
A must have for any paul Keating fan. It reveals a complex character, and a driven personality, who possessed a quiet touch of flair and style. While the Carew bio preceeded this one, Gorton's bio provides a great introduction into the Keating persona, and is probably the "got to" book on this subject at present.

constant adventure and page-turner
Spellman's first in a series combines actual historical events and characters with a fictional adventure story. Great to read to elementary children, good read for middle schoolers. This four-book series is a kind of "Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew" in early Texas. Something that gets us into a Texas before the Alamo and off the main highways.

Review of Radiation Protection in Medical Radiography
Having utilized Mary Alice Statkiewicz-Sherer's excellent text Radiation Protection in Medical Radiography through all three of her excellent editions I feel that I can well recommend this as not only a course level text book but an excellent review. The authors do not stand on the historic scare tactics of many others and yet cover this extensive topic with clarity and objectivity. My students have done well with this book as a text and study guide for the Radiation Protection section of the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists, Radiographer examination. I find this is one of the only texts to cover the topic of radiation hormesis with truth and clarity that bespeaks the findings of the extensive double longitudinal study on radiographers performed by the University of Minnesota. With full knowledge as an educator of some 36 years I find this inexpensive paperback version excellent for student afordability.

Rapid Prototyping & Manufacturing: Fundamentals of Stereolithography

The Original Rapid Prototyping Text
This book is widely considered to be the original rapid prototyping text for the relatively young RP industry. Charles Hull, Dr. Jacobs, and the other authors do a good job taking the reader through the developmental stages of Stereolithography and give valuable insight into the system design and process development of the SLA system. Other highlights include an informative chapter on SLA part accuracy, specific case studies from early users of the technology, and decent coverage of competing technologies.(circa 1991)

Some of the information is outdated due to the developments in RP over the past nine years, but it is still a valuable reference tool for any student of the rapid prototyping industry.
