Art of Cameroon

For Anyone serious about African Art!
Anyone who is interested in having a well rounded collection of books of African Art should really try to track this wonderful "Handbook" down! It is really more than a handbook. It is the work of the late Dr. Paul Gebauer, who lived in Cameroon, and was a major collector of it's art. Dr Gebaur just doesn't give you a book of pictures. He Knew the artists and saw the actual pieces used in various ceremonies. His passion leaps off the page. The pieces in this book are from his collection, and are considered to be some of the finest examples of Cameroon Art. Of particular interest was the combining of traditional artistic styles with modern applications, such as the entrance doors to Nkwen Chapel. This is a splendid book!

The Art of Cameroon A MUST HAVE !
A superb reference book for collectors, galleries, and africanists scholars for african tribal art of Cameroon ! http://home.att.ne.jp/red/koroli

The Art of Policymaking: Tools, Techniques, and Processes in the Modern Executive Branch
Published in Paperback by Longman (15 July, 2002)
Authors: George E., IV Shambaugh and Paul J., Jr. Weinstein
Amazon base price: $26.00

A seat at the players' table
Packaged neatly in this little book is a pass into the rarefied world of White House politics few individuals ever get to experience first hand. In concise language this easy to read book brakes out policy making in the executive branch to its composite processes and walks students through three real case studies taken from the authors own experiences. Well worth the read for students of public policy, young Hill staffers or anyone interested in an honest insight into the Clinton administration without the scandalous fluff.

Behind the doors of power
Behind the oaken doors of power lies a world few can understand, and even fewer can explain. Misters Weinstein and Shambaugh are elect members of a select few who have experienced that exclusive world and can translate its workings from geeky-wonk-speak into layman's English. The text details specific, interesting and instructive examples of individual policies' evolution, and draws from those anacdotes well-packaged principles for application across the broad policy spectrum. Essential reading for anybody who wishes to influence policy.

The perfect series for young adult girls
I love that Sparta's intelligence is what we see as her "super power" along with her technological "improvements". She is not a heroine who has "super strength" but rather super character. The plot is fast paced keeps you guessing and defineltly can hold even the video gamers attention. Only complaint; the book describes Sparta with blue eyes not hazel which is on the cover and her body is described not quite as thin and "top heavey" as on the cover.

A Great Story
I found this book to be a really excellent story. There were many places where I did not want to put the book down, so I made time to finish the section I was reading. Several times I exclaimed, "wow" aloud while reading on the Metro. It is easy to image-in what the author was writing, so I felt as though I was right there. I am looking forward to finding and reading venus prime 1 thru 5!

At first I felt put off by two things. First, the picture of the woman on the cover, while appealing, did cause me to refrain from leaving the book lying around for my 8-year old daughter to see. This book does not need sex to sell. Second, I was put off by the fact that Arthur Clarke was not authoring it. But I gave it a shot anyway, and I must say, I was very pleasantly surprised.

Top sci-fi mystery, interesting characters
Arthur C. Clarke's component in this series is the inclusion of a number of his interesting short stories as the subplots with very little alteration of the details. (The original book titles were actually the names of the stories, eg. Breaking Strain.) These stories are seamlessly incorporated into the whole work.

What is added by Preuss is the style and setting - Sparta, a fragile but superhuman woman who has lost her past, searches for the people who made her what she is. In doing so, she becomes involved in the situations created in Arthur C. Clarke's science fiction. The "Venus Prime" series maps out her journey (as well as serving up great stories by Clarke). Preuss peppers the books with nice details of life in the near future (like logical extensions, interesting-but-plausible technology, and so on).

If you're looking for the original short stories, several appeared in the out-of-print collection "The Sentinel ; masterworks of science fiction and fantasy" (the title story is also interesting as the origin of Clarke's novel "2001 a Space Odyssey").

Sparta Is My Hero!
I just finished The Diamond Moon. Thoroughly enjoyed this fifth volume. I have always been a huge fan of Arthur C. Clarke and was skeptical when realizing he was a co-author, but have been extremely pleased with the masterful blend of true science fiction with an involving story line using mystery and engaging character development that I assume to be of Paul Preuss' design. This is not a book to be read on it's own, but to be enjoyed from the beginning and read through the end - (I'm going to get Volume 6 now).

I have been hooked right from the start - accolades to Paul Preuss and Arthur C. Clarke!

Possible causes, attack triggers, therapies, drug treatments
Asthma - An Emerging Epidemic by Dr. Paul J. Hannaway (Assistant Clinical Professor, Tufts University School of Medicine; Fellow of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology: and the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology) is a serious and detailed manual written especially for people who must learn to cope with the respiratory illness: asthma patients, parents of children with asthma, school nurses and coaches, health-care providers and more. Offering alarming evidence of the worldwide rise in asthma, Asthma - An Emerging Epidemic presents possible causes, attack triggers, therapies, drug treatments, side effects, and much more. It is interesting to note that Dr. Hannaway is himself an asthma sufferer and the father of two asthmatic children, all of which enables him to offer a unique and authoritative perspective not usual found in medical reference writings. A solid reference written in language easily accessible to lay readers. Asthma - An Emerging Epidemic is a strongly recommended addition to community library "Health & Medicine" reference collections.

I encourage all parents to read this book it has the most current information that we were able to find! It truly feel like we have the knowledge and understanding to manage the asthma my child has!! At the Desert's Green Edge: An Ethnobotany of the Gila River Pima
Published in Hardcover by University of Arizona Press (November, 1997)
Authors: Amadeo M. Rea, Takashi Ijichi, and Gary Paul Nabhan
Amazon base price: $65.00

Much, much more than a book of FACTS.
Certainly this book is "about" the following: Pima Indians Ethnobotany Gila River Valley (N.M. and Ar Native American Anthropology Nature / Field Guide Books Science Botany Native American Studies - Tribes Plants...

...but it is really a glowing absorption of the essences of life as only those who still live in what's left of this earth's eden can truly and fully know. Rea perhaps brings this through to the reader better than any writer, poet, or other artist in history. This book is not just a "gem" or some other catchy adjective from the "How to Review a Book" manual--it is a true treasure, a legacy more valuable to the priceless "things" of life than all the dusty gold from King Tut's tomb. It is a ocean of pearls cast before the multitudes, hoping, perhaps, to snare a fertile, vigorous mind or two... You will laugh deeply. You will cry unrepentantly. You will revel in the invigorating joy of discovery. No matter who you are or how you make your way in this world, the spirit of this book will touch that secret something in you that you thought you would never find anywhere else...

Winner of prestigious Klinger Book Award
I just want to let people know that At the Desert's Green Edge was awarded the Klinger Book Award by the Society for Economic Botany. This is according to an announcement in the members' publication for the San Diego Natural History Museum, where Dr. Rea is a research associate.

Hey Paul great book. Will you be writing a book as a follow up to your story in Readers Digest about the lost tribes. Pretty interesting stuff. If not, do you know of any books written on this subject. Also can you post your e-mail address I wish to inquire about purchasing a copy of the Photograph that was displayed on pages 110 & 111. I would like it large enough so that I may frame it. Best Regards C.A. Esposito

Baby Is Three : The Complete Stories of Theodore Sturgeon
Published in Hardcover by North Atlantic Books (November, 1999)
Authors: Theodore Sturgeon, Paul Williams, and David Crosby
Amazon base price: $30.00
Average review score:

He was a giant
Ted Sturgeon was a nudist, a wild man, a tortured soul who reinvented himself and turned around to help the rest of us reinvent ourselves. It's a pleasure to watch his mind work, and a pleasure to see his stories still running wild and free without him. But his stories may upset you and make you wonder about things you've always taken for granted. His were the real dangerous visions, and his tears are mixed into his work. Reading Sturgeon is like grabbing a live wire, except being shocked never made me bellow with laughter.

Psychologically Savvy Sturgeon's Success in Sixth
Baby Is Three is the wonderful sixth volume in the Sturgeon collection. The collection is organized chronologically by story creation date. Having read and enjoyed the first five volumes, it was hard for me to imagine that I could possibly like Baby Is Three even better. But I did! Sturgeon's writing shows an impressive maturity of idea and flow in this volume, and Paul Williams' story notes kept me flipping to the back of the book to read about what was happening in Sturgeon's life at the time he penned each story. As a psychologist who is also a science-fiction fan, I enjoyed the intra- and interpersonal dynamics within each story, as well as the opportunity to understand and deconstruct the context in which Sturgeon wrote the stories, as offered by Williams' story notes. A bonus: two of Sturgeon's own short, autobiographical pieces are included at the end. For those who love science fiction that is thoughtful, playful, and psychologically based, Baby Is Three is a must-read. And for those who have read Sturgeon's well-known More Than Human, Baby Is Three will add to your understanding and appreciation of that tale, as well.

Baker's Wedding Handbook: Resources for Pastors

Don't plan a wedding without it!
Engle's book is a must-have resource for anyone planning a wedding. When the pastor marrying us asked us what we wanted in our vows, we had no idea. Baker's Wedding Handbook gives information on nearly every denomination from Baptist to Reformed. The section for each denomination not only lists tradtional vows for that denomination, but includes traditional wedding hymns and prayers typically used. In the second section of the book, Engle presents more contemporary wedding traditions, including several for second marriages. Meditations for wedding ceremonies are included in the final section of the book. The meditations are beautiful!

Perfect planning guide to wedding ceremonies!
Dr. Paul Engle was very instrumental in helping to plan my wedding ceremony. Assembled in his handbook is a complete guide for weddings that is conveniently compact. It includes an assortment of denominational styles of wedding ceremonies and ideas that help in selecting vows, music, and order of worship.
