This book is very clear, but is mostly a collection of work with very little explanation. This is good when you understand the concepts; there is less to lead you astray. However, if you don't grasp an idea from what is provided, there is little recourse. I used this book in conjunction with the (ubiquitous) Stewart multivariate calculus book. It's not very expensive so I reccomend it.

This book is very useful as long as you know better than to expect to use it alone. The only way I ever used this book is as an adjunct to my textbook (Stewart's multivariable). Where my big text by Stewart is far, far more rigorous on any given topic, this book by Matthews just punches through to the core concepts. When the big book is making you crazy just relax, take a deep breath and pick up this one. Once you understand the most basic fundamentals of what is happening, go back to your big textbook and get to work figuring out the more subtle mathematical nuances of gradient or curl or whatever. There are also some really useful example problems. Given the low price this book is a definite winner.

Gathered from photos belonging to members of the Waffen-SS themselves, this is an outstanding collection of Second World War photos. We are told in the brief pages preceding the photos that this collection was put in book form by the Association of Soldiers of the Former Waffen-SS. Originally published in 1973, a one page forward is written by Paul Hausser, the former Colonel-General and highest ranking office of the Waffen-SS.
It was hoped by the member of the association, that these photos showing the men of the Waffen-SS in their daily activities would allow the reader/viewer to walk "among the people", that is, to see them as something other than the beasts they have come to be known. Whether such an undertaken can be achieved by this or any collection is doubtful. What is accomplished is a fine compilation of photos of the men of the Waffen-SS and the raising of significant questions in the introduction. By 1944, the Waffen-SS had between 900,000 and 1,000,000 men in uniform. Were they all war criminals by virtue of merely belonging to any of these 38 divisions? Of particular interest was the questions raised regarding the quilt of the high ranking officers due to the murder of 71 American soldiers at Malmedy and the treatment of partisans belonging to the "Stella Rossa" in Italy.
The photos and the questions raised are substantial. Whether one is willing to pay the high cost of this book is another.

The book is full of interesting photos from all the theatres of war that the Waffen SS participated in, and one of the more interesting sections is the opening that covers the home barracks of the divisions. You get a feel for how well organized they were even when not at war, and the whole basis for their later reputation. However, there's no controversial photos, nothing that deals with warcrimes, and you can't help but feel that there's something whitewashed about the presentation. Still, as a historical document it is interesting.

In an endless sea of books on the Waffen SS , one must clearly point out that this is the grandfather of them all . And with that in mind , we all know that with age comes wisdom . There is no other book on this subject that i have ever seen , that can compare to this masterpeice . Both in photo quality , and in sheer honesty , this book transcends the biased - media outlook on these proud and loyal fighting units .

This book was given to me by my nurse practitioner when my first child was born still. It was helpful with the immediate concerns that confront you after your baby dies and before you have time to seek help elswhere. I have re-read it numerous times in these past 2+ years. The poems were particularly poignant and help me get in touch with my feelings. I would recommend it for anyone who has been unfortunate enough to experience the death of a child.

I received the book at the hospital with other mementos of my still born son. It took me a couple of days before I was able to read it. It was a great first book to read because it was all I could handle at the time. It included some beautiful poems and discusses how you may be feeling. It doesn't go in depth on alot of issues so if you are looking in depth discussions this is not the book for you.

Since our daughter was stillborn 7 weeks ago I have read just about every book I could find on perinatal loss. This one was sent to me by the nurse reviewing my hospital stay for my insurance company and it was the best. I found it very comforting and insightful and I've read it several times. It was short and easy to focus on in spite of the shock I was experiencing. I liked it because it dealt specifically with late pregnancy losses and the associated shock, grief, and heartbreak. It is a good gift for someone who is experiencing this catastrophe.

Wisdom of the Guides is a fantastic book for all levels of flyfishers. The book is full of helpful hints to improve your chances at landing great trout. It is also filled with interesting tales from guides who have seen it all. The book was hard to put down. It is a must read book both for the rec fisher and addict. Remember ....its all in the presentation !

The great value of this book to the western fly fisherperson is twofold. First is the amazing agreement amongst the 10 guides interviewed on many basic points of importance: less false casting, get closer to the fish, mend the line continually while nymphing and dry fly fishing. Secondly the specific fly recommendations and specific suggestions on how to present them. It goes on and on, but there are many fundamentally important points that will help me be a much better fisherman.

Reading Paul Arnold's book was like sitting on the back porch talking to a good friend. As a beginning fly fisherman, I was looking for honest advice about what kind of tackle to buy and other such stuff. What emerged from the interviews was honest advice and comments that I found very helpful; advice that was not burdened with any ulterior motives. You can't be sure of getting this kind of advice in a store, when the motivation to make a sale can color the advice that is dispensed.

While some of the more advanced topics were somewhat over my head, I suspect experienced anglers would find the homey treatment of this information just as refreshing as I found the topics of interest to me.

By its nature, a "How to" book is colored by the preferences of the author. In the case of "Wisdom," the reader is able to weigh the preferences of many experts, then come to his or her own judgments. I recommend this book for anyone interested in fly fishing.

While the book makes highly entertaining reading, it is dangerous in its glibness. Dangerfield's account is often referred to as a fundamental source for the women's suffrage movement in Britain, but his manipulation and outright suppression of facts willfully twists the contributions of the Pankhursts, radical feminists whose thinking was far in advance of its time. One often has difficulty identifying which he hated most: the incompetence of the Liberal Party or the women fighting for political recognition.

This book is the classic account of Edwardian Britain and is on the suggested reading list of the Institute for Edwardian Studies...It was written by a contemporary journalist and is a great read. However, it focuses a great deal on the political side and lacks objectivity. An excellent counter-weight to Dangerfield is David Powell, The Edwardian Crisis. This is a first-rate academic revision to what Dangerfield and past scholars have written about the Edwardian period, but it is not really for those new to the subject.

Whoever you are and whatever you do you can find soemthing to take away from this book. Essential for an understanding of politics in a democracy, and better because it gives readers an example to learn from, rather than just theory. Also a great study in human relationships and the tragi-comedic nature of life. Probably one of the best and wittiest books on history/politics ever written.

I don't normally enjoy courtroom dramas but this one was very well written. However after reading a book with such anticipation I was tremendously disappointed in the ending.The characters are believable, the plot well twisting, and not overdone with details.I read this in a matter of two days and enjoyed every minute until the end.Worth reading but don't get your hopes up for a grand finale.

This was an easy book to read and quite exciting. I would recommend it to anyone and I thought the ending was exciting and not what I had expected.

I do not read to many drama's but this was one that I did and enjoyed. Not complex and did not take a long time to read.

This TPB reprints Uncanny X-Men #168-176. It tells of Angel's kidnapping by the underground mutant outcast group known as the Morloks, Cyclops meets Madelyne Pyor (who is a clone of Jean Grey created by Sinister), Wolverine's marriage in Japan with Mariko and introduces Rogue into the X-Men.

This collection of stories is pretty good and the art is the standard of the time, which was in the early '80s. I still think Marvel charges way too much for their TPBs, but it doesn't really make your wallet bleed anywayz. But it's a pretty good read if you want to know some more background info on the X-Men.

A grieving Scott Summers lost his true love Jean Grey, when she killed herself to save the world from the overpowering Phoenix. Now he's met Madeline Pryor, who has an uncanny likeness to his former love...very uncanny!

Meanwhile, Wolverine prepares for his marriage to the Japanese beauty, Mariko; Storm gets a new look and becomes the leader of a unlikely group of mutants; Kitty starts exploring her love for Peter/Colossus; and an enemy seeks help from the X-Men.

I enjoy "From the Ashes." The artwork is classic and the story is entertaining and adventurous. And this is a highlight in Claremont storytelling.

If you're an X-Men fan, you'll like this.

I've been a fan of the X-Men for years and years now, and I have to say, this is one of my all time favorite X-Men graphic novels. It chronicles some truly great moments from X-Men history. The two chapters concerning the X-Men's visit to Japan, the tragic, failed wedding of Logan to Mariko, and Wolverine's ultimate battle with the Silver Samuraii, is the stuff that made X-Men one of the greatest dramatic-action comic book series of all time.

The younger generation of comics fans who got hooked during the wacky 1990's/Jim Lee/Rob Liefield/Image years will probably overlook the simplistic beauty of Paul Smith's artwork. But his subtle handling of facial expressions, his accuracy with human anatomy, and his technique for panel-to-panel storytelling is flawless. As a kid of the 80's who is now a working professional artist, I learned more about the basic craft of drawing comics from looking at Paul Smith's work in these stories than I did from "How To Draw Comics The Marvel Way."

Claremont's writing here is also superb, with a good balance between the everyday, normal lives of the X-Men, to their crazy, violent adventures, to their mixed-up, emotionally turbulant personal relationships. And of course, his interweaving of many tangled subplots. X-Men books became unnecessarily talky in later years, with dialogue and captions crowding the art, but this volume presents stories from the classic era when Claremont preferred to keep the chatter to a minimum and occasionally even shut up altogether and let the artwork tell the story by itself.

And finally, the fun front-and-back cover illustrations by Art Adams, are just the icing on the cake. This one is worth every nickel.

Along with No Exit (and three other plays), this is a wonderful place to begin one's journey into Existentialism. J. P. Sartre presents the reader with a nice array of stories that encapsulate many of the juiciest of Existentialist themes. I suggest that one concentrate on the feelings of the characters when reading each story - and read it slowly and carefully: philosophers like Sartre deserve the time. I suggest Jeff Reynolds' fine review for the themes of each story. I also want to give praise to Lloyd Alexander (Translator) for his brilliant, readable translations. I have noticed other French-to-English translators who struggle terribly to construct English statements with substance. Alexander captures Sartre's thought with awesome force and detail.

"The Wall and other short stories" is a triumph in literature. Each story explores the depths of human thought and reason through an existential point of view. Each story can be interpreted different by all readers, therefore making this a great book for discussion.

"The Wall" is the first story presented. It consumes the reader because of its brilliant writing style. The story is narrated by a man named Pablo Ibbieta, who is in a jail cell with 2 others awaiting execution the following morning. Every event that transpires that particular night is analyzed almost too thoroughly thus leaving the reader in a trance. I wont get into it too deeply, but believe me, this story is worth reading...i guarentee it will have to be read again. After finishing the story, I felt as though nothing mattered. Who cares if the dishes were not washed, who cares if I would be late for work. Believe me, this story will have a profound impact on the way you think. Don't be surprised if you have a new appreciation for life. This story enlightens the mind.

Another great story from this book is called "Erostratus". Erostratus was a character who wanted to be famous, so he burned down the temple of Ephesus, which was one of the 7 wonders of the world. This is the central symbol of the story, the quest for glory. It also brings up an interesting point when the narrator asks one of his colleagues "Who built Ephesus?" and the colleauge did not know, he only knew who burned it. "Erostratus" in short is one mans decent into madness because of his quest to be remembered. The ending of "Erostratus" is filled with suspense and makes your heart beat in fear. It serves as a grim reminder that there are people of this type, and we should be prepared at any time for them to strike.

There are also 3 other stories, that being "The Room", "Intimacy", and "The Childhood of a Leader", which also draw the reader inside the workings of the mind through an existential window (ie: we are all here by accident, man is condemned to choose).

In short, these stories are all perfect, and leave the reader with a feeling of enlightment. Sartre is an extremely intelligent and clever writer. This is evident in these short stories. So turn off the television, buy this book, and start questioning your existence, you owe it to yourself. Besides, they are short stories, so you will be able to get through at least one a day...that isnt much to ask considering the benefits you will reap by reading them.

'The Wall' rises up as a catalogue of man's solitary and free application of the existentialist's understanding. Sartre leaves no dark corner unlit in what could be considered his most biting renderings of the human condition's anguish in the face of meaninglessness.

'The Wall' itself is an astoundingly suspenseful glimpse at the fine line between life and death, the insanity in ultimate human will-power, and the psychological effects of foreknowing one's own time of death.

'The Room' is stark and vague. Interpretations abound, all from absurd (in itself) to Sartre's most profound writing. Nevertheless, the story's 'insanity' brings about many insights into the world of the individual of nothingness.

'Erostratus' follows quite well, asking whether it is moral, immoral, right, or wrong, to kill and whether a modern man is truly free to commit conscious evil. Furthermore, it questions our modern society's knack for making celebrities of villains.

'Intimacy' is a wonderful story with heavy-handed, deadbolt dialogue, well-crafted absurd heroes, and philosophical wit, wound up in a woman's tale of love, adultery, loyalty, friendship, impotence, and existence.

Finally, 'The Childhood of a Leader' reveals the facist's facade of strength, the soft scar-tissue of their idealistic youth, the true childishness of their anti-semite reactions, and the way in which men allow themselves to follow or hunger to be followed.

I'm sure this is a wonderful book. However, I, rather ignorantly, was expecting "small" and "micro" to actually mean small and micro! These are still huge systems on towers three times the height of a house! I'm glad it was just a library book, because I feel the title doesn't accurately describe the book.

From an individual's viewpoint (as opposed to an electrical utility), this is an excellent introductory text. I was surprised at how clearly presented the material was, while still mantaining enough of the technical formulas and rules-of-thumb to have substance. Mr. Gipe lays out the options open to anyone interested in implementing some sort of home-based electrical generation wind system and surveys a range of available products that fall into this area of the wind turbine market. Important decision-making parameters are discussed and the reader is given a good ball-park idea of how to proceed. I will be ordering the book "Wind Power For Home And Business" in order to fill in some of the details.

It has been a pleasure reading such a clear and optimistic book on one of my favourite subjects Wind Energy.

Paul Gipe has over 20 years experience in the wind Industry both as a practitioner and a commentator. This is evident in the no-nonsense way he covers the various aspects of wind systems for the small user.

This book is a wonderful primer for all but the professional wind enthusiast; in which case the companion volume Wind Energy for Home and Business (1993) weighing in at over 400 pages is the book of choice.

The book covers everything from the fundamentals of wind energy; including lots of maths; through to the actual installation, operation and maintenance of the authors own wind system. In between are chapters on estimating the performance of the proposed wind system, on and off the grid applications and off course what to look for in buying a wind turbine for your home, weekender or boat. A very important chapter has been included on siting and safety. After all what is the point of having an environmentally responsible wind system if it is behind a tree or if you injure or kill yourself trying to install or operate the thing?

Through out the book the reader is constantly treated to excellent photographs from the authors extensive global travels with his wife and companion Nancy Nies in search of wind turbines. You have access to the inside of manufacturing premises and to the top and bottom of towers and wind turbines around the world.

In conclusion I commend this book to anyone who has an interest in the environment or Renewable Energy. Wind is the perfect companion to Solar Power and together they are changing the future for the better.
