One of my most favorite books to read!!
I dont like to give 5 stars, but this book is Bad! Nice short and not overworded or exagerated biographies of some butt-kickin Bad-...!! This is the second one Ive bought and given away! I just might buy one for myself...again.

Vastly entertaining!
This is a unique book. A collection of 44 mini-biographies of some of the most remarkable men (and a few women)of courage, honor and duty. The selection is eclectic: lawmen, outlaws, soldiers, fighter pilots, warriors and an assortment of others. Some are well known, some are obscure. Some are admirable for their virtue, others are scoundrels. What they have in common is an unwillingness to take the easy way out when things got rough.

In an era when masculinity has become suspect and courage is seen as psychopathology, it is a fine thing to read about men who refused to surrender their honor for the illusion of safety. Men for whom the concept of duty was inviolable and for whom courage was central to their being.

The author knows how to tell a grand tale. He avoids the temptation to engage in melodrama or psychological interpretation. I had to ration myself to reading just a few chapters at a time, the temptation was to race through the book.

My only complaint is that this book should have been presented in a hardback edition. I know I will be rereading this book from time to time for years to come.

To be sure, this book will give great pleasure simply as remarkable tales of remarkable people. However, I believe this book would be useful in the character education of any young man or women. The fact that not all of the people included are "nice guys" adds a depth that can be used to fully explore the nature of such characteristics as honor, duty and courage.

Author's Comments
I have always been fascinated by extraordinary fighting men like Alexander, Jim Bowie, Andrew Jackson, Alvin York and Audie Murphy, men who actually performed the sorts of exploits depicted by action heroes in the movies. I decided I would collect the stories of as many of these figures as I could find. I wound up with 50 profiles, averaging about 2000 words. Each focuses on "the good parts" with only enough biographical detail and historical context to set the stage. I got photos, prints, or did drawings of nearly everyone included.

Only honorable fighting men were considered, men who fought face to face in single combat, or against multiple opponents. I included no one who preyed on the defenseless. I wanted variety--only so many fighter pilots or western gunfighters. I wanted to cover as much history and geography as possible, and to feature masters of many individual combat systems--the fist, the spear, the sword, the pistol, the rifle and the fighter plane. I didn't include anyone who didn't fight for blood, whatever the level of prowess he may have demonstrated--no dojo warriors or IPSC champs. I wanted a mixture of familiar and obscure figures, and their stories had to have enough detail and drama to make for good reading.

Are these, strictly speaking, "The Deadliest Men"? That's debatable, but they're the most interesting, most impressive fighting men I could find, each distinctly different, and I'm confident each has a seat at Valhalla's head table.

Deep Secrets: The Discovery and Exploration of Lechuguilla Cave
Published in Paperback by Cave Books (August, 1999)
Authors: Stephen Reames, Lawrence Fish, Paul Burger, and Patricia Kambesis
Amazon base price: $24.95
Average review score:

This is a fantastic adventure story, a "must read"!
You may have heard of Lechuguilla cave. Located in Carlbad Caverns National Park, it is one of the world's most spectacular underground treasures, boasting extensive passages and impressive formations. It has been featured in a National Geographic special, and it received a great deal of national media coverage when an explorer was injured there several years back. While many people have heard of this incredibly beautiful cave, few know the story of its discovery and exploration, and of the intense struggles that ensued as various people vied for control of this underground treasure.

In "Deep Secrets" (Cave Books 1999) Stephen Reams, Lawrence Fish, Paul Burger and Patricia Kambesis give us a true insider's view of the biggest discoveries, the dramatic episodes, and the political battles surrounding Lechuguilla.

The story begins with a small group of Colorado cavers who have a passion for digging open new cave passages. Spurred on by success at home, the group decides to attempt a promising project in the Guadeloupe mountains of New Mexico, at a small, uninteresting cave by the name of Lechuguilla. As we toil with the diggers, the authors paint a picture of the rocky political landscape upon which the entire story takes place. And as the explorers break through into the "find of the century", the political tensions break loose into an all out battle for control of the cave.

As the story unfolds, we are witness to the most sensational discoveries and the thrill of exploration as Lechuguilla becomes longer, deeper and more spectacular. We come to know the explorers themselves, sharing in their triumphs and frustrations. And we hold our breaths in suspense at the dramatic rescue of an injured caver miles underground. All of this is played out on the backdrop of an intense political struggle.

"Deep Secrets" gives us a unique behind the scenes glimpse into the life of a Lechuguilla explorer. The authors have done a wonderful job highlighting the biggest discoveries and most exciting stories, encompassing a cast of over fifty characters, while maintaining a coherent and compelling story line.

Far from being a book just for cave explorers, "Deep Secrets" has universal appeal. This is not a collection of expidition reports, it's a true life story of adventure, drama and intrigue. And wrapped around the amazing discoveries, the stunningly beautiful passages, and the thrill of exploration is the timeless theme of a community torn apart by greed and power struggles, yet united by the need to rescue one of its own.

"Deep Secrets" is thoroughly enjoyable reading for nature aficionados, adventure enthusiasts or anyone who just likes a good story.

GREAT BOOK!!!!
Anyone who claims to be a caver and does not read this book isobviously a fake. This is a much need chapter in the history ofAmerican caving. Lechuguillia Cave is the crown jewel of the caving world. This is as close as you can get without being there. READ THIS BOOK!!!

Outstanding book about a world class cave.
As a caver, and cave owner, one of my fantasies is to visit Lechuguilla Cave. Since the opportunities to do so are rare, the next best thing is to read this book. It's well-written and a tremendous amount of time and research went into putting the history and stories together. The photos are great too.

Outside Civilizations Walls
"Delicate Prey", the title story, is one of the most memorable stories I've ever encountered. This story of a young flute player and his uncles who are Arab traders crossing a remote desert region begins innocently enough but soon a stranger appears on the horizon who comes closer and closer. This desert episode is told with a perfect accumulation of atmospheric detail and just the barest amount of human detail to place this tale in the realm of myth. The tale involves many things that will later appear in Bowles' other short fictions including hashish and flute music and other things that will go unmentioned so as not to spoil their discovery by new readers. "At Paso Rojo" is a story set in South America on a ranch. There two sisters go after their mothers death to live with their brother. As the sisters settle in one sister especially decides she wants to live a freer life than women in the cities are allowed to live and she begins to allow herself liberties that shock her more conservative sister. As she rides through the wild jungle her horse bolts and the sensations she has impart to the reader that hers is no ordinary psychology. Used to suppressing her sexuality while her mother was alive she begins to explore her power as a woman and as events unfold we see that this power has sprouted something in her that cannot be mistaken for anything but pure evil. Every story in this collection presents striking locales and lurid acts. The appeal of them is partly in the exoticism of the locales and partly in the allure of the lurid. Bowles aesthetic is a strange one but his tales could not be delivered with any more force. The collection is dedicated to Poe, and appropriately so, but the depth of the psychological examination of different kinds of pathologies lend these stories a power that magnifies their effect beyond mere horror stories. They are stories of modern psyches with the superficial but protective veneer of civilization removed.

Strange, morbid and fascinating
Not everyone will enjoy thse weird stories mostly set in Mexico or Morocco. They contain violence and, in a way, sex, although sex is never explicitly described. They almost always end in disaster, sometimes grotesque and cruel disaster. The sexual element is never quite straight heterosexual attraction between consenting adults. A frequent plot is that someone is invited somewhere by a host who becomes hostile or takes a journey following an unreliable guide that ends badly. Think DH Lawrence, Joyce Carol Oates, Roald Dahl, Truman Capote and, as regards the prose style. maybe even Raymond Carver He is a minimalist with a way of bringing an exotic setting to life in half a sentence without an adjective or adverb. A remarkable thing is how long ago the stories were written and how modern the style seems.

A Stunning Collection!
This is a must-read for anyone interested in 20th century American literature. An absolutely stunning collection of tales that provoke, disturb and intoxicate the reader. Bowles writes in a style that is almost clinical: dry, precise and elegant, which accentuates the horrors he describes all the more. Hailed by such writers and Gore Vidal and Norman Mailer as a modern classic, you should not fail to read it if you have not already done so. And if enjoyed this title, check out The Sheltering Sky and Let it Come Down.

A Must Read
The Diabetic Eye is a must read for all who have family or friends who are diabetic. I have both and had not fully realized the importance of good managed eye care in addition to a good general health care plan.
At first glance I thought this is going to be beyond me but Dr. Chous has provided information which is clear and easily understood by a non-professional. I have found no other books on this subject that were so readable.

This is a book we've needed for a long time!
As a public health and eye care professional, I am glad to see a book like Dr. Chous'. There is an exceptional clarity to how he explains the broad scope of eye problems which can occur with diabetes as well as some very helpful and novel ideas for patients to take control of their diabetic situation and become an equal partner with their doctor in determining their own health outcome.

I highly recommend this book to any patient with diabetes, any caregiver, as well as to all professionals involved in caring for patients with diabetes. You won't find any other book which packs so much information and delivers it in a way that doctors and laypersons alike can grasp the gravity of the potentially blinding effects of diabetes on the eyes.

Fantastic advice for the diabetic patient
It is a rare medical book indeed that is able to cater to both the doctor and patient. Dr. Chous ably accomplishes this demanding task with this book. Diabetic patients and their families will be able to better deal with the health dangers of the disease, especially the ocular side effects, after reading the clear, concise chapters. And medical professionals will want to have a copy on hand for the best summary of diabetic eye conditions that I have ever seen. Kudos to Dr. Chous for an intelligent, lively writing style, and for authoring this most excellent reference.

Outstanding information source
This book helped me survive graduate school - especially during my written preliminary exams. It is a comprehensive source of information, and it happily contained every word I wished to look up. I would not call it simply a 'dictionary', as the explanations are very in-depth and detailed. Seriously, this is one you need in your personal collection.

A must for college & graduate students
This book was invaluable to me during my tenure as a graduate student in molecular biology. It is very comprehensive, easy to use and to understand. It is a great asset to anyone studying a biology related field at an undergraduate or graduate level. It is particularly helpful when reading papers from research journals. Worth every penny.

A superb, comprehensive dictionary at a reasonable price.
Singleton's Dictonary of Microbiology and Molecular Biology is wonderfully comprehensive, very current and a bargain at $62. This dictionary at 1,000-plus pages is a must-have book.

very useful book for the beginers of digital electronics
I am a student of electronics engineering and am using this book as one of my text books in digital electronics. This is a great book for the beginers and clears the fundamentals such as - logic circuits and gates, various number systems, memory, counters, etc. I congratulate the author for producing such a helpful and educative edition.

Excellant book for hardware as well as software engineers.
Being a professor of computer sciences, I have read and taught this book for students of Master in computer science. The book has been designed such that students having no background of electronics can benefit equally. Using modular approach various courses can be designed for digital logic designers, computer scientists and hardware engineers. I have found this book very useful and I have recommended this book in Bachelors as well as Master's level program. The only problem I have been facing is that being a tutor I have not been able to find the tutor's manual. I will appreciate if someone can guide me how to get the teaching material of this book

Very nice for the student's not knowing basic
I have read your book I had very little knowledge of digital electronic but after reading your book I got a very good knowledge about the subject & I would always recommend your book. The colour printing of your book make the book more attractive.

History - Past and Present
There are several versions of the Navajo Creation Story known but Paul Zolbrod has captured the most plausible and accepted rendition in print. Most Navajos that I know accept this text as adequate and feel that the author's treatment of the subject matter is fair and sensitive to a very vital element of Dine' culture. Many Navajos, especially elders will say that the material printed in this book used to be reserved for the sweat hooghan and special times between family members but understand that now things have changed and accept the publication of very special and sensitive aspects of a great peoples' religion, as long as it is done under the auspices of the Navajo Nation. Perhaps in time others will publish material more to the needs of Navajo scholars but to this day this book is the literary standard of the creation stories.

Excellent scholarly work
Paul Zolbrod does a fine job of collating his own transcriptions of Navajo oral traditions with the records of other scholars from decades past to create a seamless narration of the Navajo story of creation. This is a valuable contribution to a deeper understanding of a specific native American culture.

Are you wondering how we evolved? Emerge into a new book.
This book is about the creation of life. How human beings evolved in a world that had kaos. This tale includes many different worlds, in which life was discovered. Many gods have created human life to bring forth to what we arrived to today, but the only thing to destroy us is kaos. Hatred among both sexes causes the seperation which leads to longing for one another. Among the humans, anxiety was brought to the world and the gods who created the world, got angey. So the gods took action and destroyed the world by pushing all forms of life out almost killing everyone, but the humans were the smartest and emerged into the next world which is known today

I'd like more!
I recently purchased DISCOVER! Volume 3 and I want more! Please send Volumes 2 and 3!

The only thing better than this book is a personal tour.
Having traveled and lived in the areas described in Vol.3, The Lower Mississippi, from St. Louis, Missouri to Memphis, Tennessee, and descended from a family of river rats, I can say that I've "Been there, done that, got the T-shirt."

Reading Pat's book is like traveling along with her as she explores the Great River Road along the mighty Mississippi River. I was especially impressed with the with the book's scope and readability. Pat has included personal insights from area inhabitants, collected geographical, historical and societal information and spread it all liberally throughout the travelogue. This is one hard book to put down, and if you ever decide to visit the area you'll have plenty of reference material to use. You will feel like you know the place already, and have gotten your own t-shirt.
