Terrific Reference Book!
Whether you're a human resources professional or an executive or manager in a company without a human resources department, you are confronted by all sorts of difficult personnel questions. Hiring and firing can be highly complicated subjects. Scary. Unless you have someone you can turn to for reliable advice.

Never fear. Paul Falcone is here! The author of "96 Great Interview Questions to Ask Before You Hire" and "101 Sample Write-Ups for Documenting Employee Performance Problems" has authored a book that will relieve the stress in your people-management life. Falcone is Director of Employment and Development Paramount Pictures in Hollywood and teaches for UCLA. Here's a resource who knows what he's talking about.

This book is organized into two main sections: Hiring and Firing. Under the Hiring Section, you'll find chapters on the hiring process, recruitment tools, online recruiting, interviewing, and making the final selection. The Firing Section begins with a chapter answering common questions about the performance management and termination process. Next, the reader will learn about progressive discipline, terminations for cause and summary offenses, and reductions-in-force and layoffs.

Through these chapters, Falcone presents 112 vital questions . . . and answers. Each question is addressed with a basic answer, followed by a section titled "Tell Me More." What a wealth of information!

And, as if this weren't enough, the book also includes an appendix with sample policies, agreements, and letters. The comprehensiveness of this section is amazing. A glossary, resource list, and index provide even more value.

Highly recommended!

Packed with issues of management responsibilities
Paul Falcone's Hiring And Firing Question And Answer Book tells how best to attract, interview and select candidates for critical jobs. HR professionals in particular will find this is packed with issues of management responsibilities which carefully identifies potential problems and their solutions.

I'm recommending this to all my clients.
First, September 11. Then recession. Next -- and inevitable -- MORE layoffs. There's an easy way and a hard way...a right way and a wrong way...to do what many business managers now have no choice but to do. I'm a management consultant, and this book is a useful guide.

History, Myth and the Boxers
"History in Three Keys" is an excellent history of the Boxer Rebellion in northern China in the late nineteenth century. Even more than that, however, it is a look at the historian's craft, how history is experienced and related, and how history is used in the present. The book is divided into three parts, which discuss the Boxer Rebellion as Event, Experience and Myth. The first consists of standard historical writing, a brief survey of the Boxer movement. It relates important names, dates, ideas and events in a narrative history constructed by the author.

The second section, The Boxers as Experience, is more interesting. Cohen attempts to analyze the experiences of the Boxers, to form a picture of the past. He looks at various themes, discussing how they shaped the Boxer movement and the attitudes and beliefs of those involved. Making extensive use of primary documents, he tries to determine their thoughts and feelings regarding foreigners, magic, gender and death. Of course, Cohen realizes that he cannot fully recount or recreate the experience of the Boxer rebellion, and spends many pages discussing ways historians and writers can approach history to try to understand and explain it.

These themes become more fully developed in the book's final section, The Boxers as Myth. Here Cohen explores the various ways the Boxers have been used as myths in twentieth century China, serving "the political, ideological, rhetorical and/or emotional needs" of the moment. While foreigners and the New Culture movement mythologized the Boxers as symbols of Chinese superstition and backwardness, anti-Imperialists cheered their anti-foreignism and nationalism, and cultural revolutionaries idolized their rebelliousness and the mythical role of women in the rebellion.

Cohen explores the difference between historians, who attempt to understand and explain the past, and mythologizers, who try to use history to advance an agenda in the present. He discusses the process of myth-making, in which contexts and inconvenient facts are ignored and a one-dimensional 'history' in created through distortion and oversimplification. Still, Cohen has some respect for mythologizing the past, and notes that experience itself is "processed" in terms of culture and myth. "Mythic constructions are ubiquitous in the world of experience and form an inseparable part of it."

I was assigned part of this book in a history course on nineteenth century globalization, but ended up reading the whole thing - and I'm glad I did. In addition to giving an excellent history of the Boxer Rebellion, "History in Three Keys" contains valuable insights into more recent Chinese history and development. Even more valuable are the discussions about the nature of history, myth, historical writing and the historian's craft. It is well written, clear and engaging, with extensive notes, index and bibliography. I enjoyed it immensely and recommend it to all interested in Chinese history or historical writing in general.

Awesome
I enjoyed this book immensely. The book is split into three parts, each covering the same events from different perspective.

The first part is covered just like most any other historical book. Mostly facts and dates, and reasons as to why certain things turned out the way they did.

The second part of the book, by far the most interesting to me, was the history of the events as seen through the eyes of those who lived through it: the missionaries, the rebels, and the townsfolk. Mostly derived from writings of people that were living in China at the time, it shows their feelings and thier thoughts.

The third part involves the use of the boxers in the agendas of political and social parties in subsequent years. It is very possibly one of the best history books that I have read.

Not only does it cover this particular historical event, it also is a study of historians and their craft. It looks into how historians decide what is to be recorded and what is not and shows you how this affects the way people in the future perceive the event.

Livin' day by day
Cohen's book analyzes a particularly notorious (for Chinese and Western commentators) historical event--the Boxer Rebellion in North China (1899-1900) from an extremely fresh perspective. It is hardly poststructuralist to assert that people live history one day at a time, rather than according to some grand plan, and that is how Cohen treats the Boxer Rebellion. Most Western scholars merely see the Boxers as a manifestation of an irrational, bloodthirsty xenophobiba, while Chinese scholars seem to fall into two categories: (1) those like the early twentieth century modernizers who saw the Boxers as an embarrassment to the cause of national unity and freedom, and (2) those like Communist Chinese historians who see the Boxers as a precursor of their own victorious struggle in 1949. Cohen masterfully demythologizes the Boxers and puts them into the context of (gasp!) their own lives. Working from a combination of secondary and primary sources, Cohen reconstructs the domestic situation in China during the late nineteenth century and argues that domestic issues (particularly famine and floods) more than anything else prompted the Boxer uprising. This thesis, of course, turns on its head the idea that the Boxers were an instrument of the evil Dowager Empress Cixi in order to prevent Westerners from disturbing China's ancient and corrupt culture. Cohen is especially interesting in examining the mechanics and experience of mythmaking, applied in this case to the Boxers but which could be applied to just about any event or experience that has emotional or subjective importance for a group of people. This book is extremely useful for anyone, history students or otherwise, who are interested in Chinese history, or perhaps more fundamentally, how we reconstruct the past in order for it to make sense.

A History of Ukraine

Wonderful to read for an understanding of Ukraine
From pre-history to Independence in 1991, this book surveys the history of Ukraine and its people. It is unique in not only portraying the history of the Ukrainian people but also includes the other peoples who live or have lived in the land now known as Ukraine.

The organization of the book is chronological with 49 chapters divided into ten parts. Each part covers a significant period in Ukrainian history: Pre-Kievan Times; the Kievan Period; the Lithuanian-Polish Period; the Cossack State; the Hetmanate; Ukraine in the Russian Empire; Ukraine in the Austrian Empire; World War I; the Interwar Years; and, World War II & the Postwar Years. Forty-two black-and-white maps help illustrate the concepts described in the text. Also included are thirty-six textual inserts which provide lengthy quotes of important documents. Sometimes these feel redundant because the author has described so well the events highlighted by the inserted texts.

For readers to whom 700 pages of Ukrainian history is not enough and who want to learn more about specific events or periods described in this book, Magocsi provides a forty page bibliographic essay called: For Further Reading. One of the great stumbling blocks for English-speaking readers who want to learn Ukrainian history is the fact that so many Ukrainian sources have not been translated. A great feature of this bibliography is that the vast majority of the works listed are in English.

Ukrainian history is complex. This book, although daunting to read because of its size and depth of coverage, can help the student of Ukrainian history untangle the puzzles of Ukraine and its people. It is a great reference work that belongs in the library of anyone interested in the subject.

A History of Ukraine--Magocsi
A beautifully written history of outstanding excellence. I have found it most helpful. Professor Magocsi is to be commended on a another success.

Excellent Reference on Ukrainian History
Mr. Magocsi's "History of Ukraine" often takes a second billing to Mr. Subtelny's "Ukraine: A History" - and I think, unfairly. Both have a lot to offer, and frankly, no passionate student of Ukrainain history should choose one over the other. He or she should get both. A wealth of information, and first rate scholarship are impressive. Mr. Magocsi has done a first rate job. Mychajlo Hrushevsky would approve of both, and we should too.

Buy 2 and keep 1 in the shop
The best part of this book is the first twenty two pages. Paul explains customizing and planning a design to fit your need and then goes into working with different materials. He even explains and has a drawing to show the proper way to install a screw. His information on joinery is easy to understand with the shop drawings to help explain them. Most people think you need a large selection of tools to build a project, not so as is demonstrated with the list Paul gives you. Layout and stock preperation along with the triangular marking system is information every woodworker should know to make a project easier to build, and finally someone gives us a simple finish to put on a project instead of worrying about using expensive spray equipment. Throughout the book there are many tips that can be applied to any project. The photos are great, the book is well written with some fantastic projects anyone would be proud to show off in their home. Thanks Paul for a great addition to my library and my shop.

Review of; " Home Storage Projects" by Paul Anthony
Taunton Press realizes that a how-to book must not only deliver in content, but must be able to stand the abuse that taking it to the shop can cause. They use a slick cover and page material that looks like it could be damp-mopped many times without wilting. The content will also pass the test of time without wilting also. Anthony has brought six great woodworkers, including himself, to take on thirteen different storage projects.

There is probably not a project in this book that anyone would have a problem with. The attention to detail is amazing; from the complete and accurate cut-lists, to the step by step written procedure for each operation with outstanding photographs to illustrate what tool or machine to use. We have all been advised to do "dry clamp-ups" to make sure of glueing sequence and optimum clamp placement. This is covered in detail on almost every project.

For those of you who are Turners, you get your chance on the legs of the Storage Bench, and Allen Spooner shows how to book-match veneer for the Man's Jewelry Box.

I have found Anthony's book to be more than worthwhile addition to my library, and I am sure you will also. Where else can you get working drawings, great instructions and photographs for thirteen projects for this price?

Fine furniture...not shelving!
Paul Anthony's new 'Home Storage Projects' from Taunton Press is not a run-of-the-mill 'store-it' campaign. He teaches fine woodworking along the way, with items as simple as a CD cabinet or pantry door storage. For those who want more complicated pieces, he offers a bench with curved, sleigh-bed end handles and a built-in of under-bed storage with a pedestal and drawers that roll out on both sides. He shows how to construct a printer stand that looks elegant enough to be a display case in a living room.

A long kitchen work station, a file cabinet, and a desktop organizer designed for real storage of work at hand, are some of the projects included. A mobile closet for guests, a man's jewelry box, and a medicine cabinet with a locking partition for drugs, are all presented with design options for fitting to required spaces or use.

The author offers up shop jigs for mitered clamping cauls, spline miter mortises and tapering. Hints show how to set router depth for leaf hinges in an instant, how to spring a batten for a fair curve, and how to install a full mortise lock. Producing these projects off the fully illustrated instructions would be a basic course in woodworking, with guidance in resawing, joinery and simple finishes.

The nice thing about this book is that the author never forgets to inform the reader why he is doing something, so it all makes sense as you go along. Illustrations and photos are clear and move the work along step by step. Selecting a space in the home, then designing a project to fill that space, is one of the best ways to learn design and construction techniques, and that is where this book succeeds so well. From small projects to large, there are useful pieces here for nearly everyone.

Hostels Ireland
Paul Karr has done his homework and he receives an A+ for the information in his Hostels Ireland book. My wife and I spent 7 weeks treking Ireland summer '99 and found his book to be invaluable. The information was clear, concise and accurate. Things change and so do hostels and some hostels he recommended we liked better than others. But we did not stay any where we disliked or felt the information in the book had misled us. Hostel Ireland was our bible and served us well. It was our "Lonely Planet" for where to stay. He did a great job and I'm looking forward to any future editions.

I'll have to write another review when I get back!
I leave for Ireland in 10 days for a 2 week stay. This book was invaluable in planning my trip and I'm sure has cut down on the expenses. I was able to read it in one night and quickly scanning the reviews was made simple by clever icons giving each hostel the thumbs up, thumbs done, a cleanliness factor, party index, and general brief review.

Excellent, up-to-date descriptions, ratings are questionable
Paul Karr offers a comprehensive, honest, regional survey of the best hostels in Ireland. I had the opportunity to stay in four of them recently and I disagree with the ratings that he presents, espe cially in the section "Paul's Picks". Both the Old School House Hostel in Dun Laoghaire and the Bru Hostel on Inisheer Island were average, uninspired hostels, adequate, but certainly not worthy of special attention. I did, however, stay in 2 other hostels which were rated "thumbs up" and found them to be wonderful - clean, friendly, spacious and fun. They are the Old Mill Hostel in Westport and the Aille River Hostel in Doolin. I would not have had the pleasure of staying in either of these without the help of this book. Thanks, Paul!

What a great book!
I have a two year old and a newborn. This topic is of immediate interest to me. But this isn't why I bought it.

As a product designer I wanted to gain some perspective on how we acquire language in the first place and found most of the documentation weak. Then I found this book.

I realy enjoyed reading it. I left my copy on the plane on a trip overseas and was greatly disapointed by the airlines failure to recover it (I sure hope the cleaning crew enjoyed it!). So I bought another copy immediately and continued reading.

One of my favorite books this year.

A Marvelous and Readable Synthesis
This book is a marvelous synthesis of research, by the author, his students, and many others, on how children learn the meanings of words. It makes clear why learning the meanings of words is a difficult task requiring explication, which is not immediately obvious, and then presents a great deal of evidence bearing on how it is done. As someone accustomed to reading very critically and frequently finding faults and gaps even in arguments to which I am sympathetic, I was amazed at how rarely I could find anything to quibble with. The book is also very balanced theoretically; the author considers a wide range of possible factors, from innate constraints on lexical semantics to general principles of theory of mind, and argues his case very fairly.

The book is not always easy reading, but it is always clear and pleasant. In a few cases the interpretation of an experiment described will not be entirely clear to someone with no background in psycholinguistics; in a few others, linguistic ideas are referred to without much explanation. Overall, however, the book should be accessible even to those without specialized trainng in linguistics or psychology.

Excellent book about children's language development
This is a wonderfully informative, readable, and engaging book about how children learn words, and more generally about children's early conceptual knowledge and understanding of the minds of other people. Anyone interested in how children learn language, or in the relationship between language and thought, will enjoy this book. The author surveys a large body of the latest, most exciting research findings about how children learn words, and presents his own very interesting proposals, covering such issues as: The prelinguistic concepts that infants and young children possess, how they read the minds of others in order to decide what a speaker is referring to when they hear a new word, how they attend to certain aspects of the world at the expense of others when considering possible meanings for a new word; in short, how children are able to perform such a remarkable feat as learning a language in their first few years of life. The book also addresses such deep and interesting issues as whether the language one learns influences how one sees and thinks about the world. I highly recommend this book to those who are interested in children's early language and thought and its development.

Shows Us How Friendly and Natural Evangelism Can Be
"How do I share my faith with others? I don't know what I'd tell them. What if I can't answer their questions? I get tongue-tied when I try to share the gospel with an unbeliever." Are these your concerns? This book shows us how friendly and natural evangelism can be. Evangelism is not for extroverts only. We all can be ambassadors of Christ to those who are in our sphere of influence. This book helps us hurdle social barriers, show non-believers how relevant Jesus Christ is today, communicate our message clearly, and how to tackle frequently asked questions asked by non-believers.

God works in the heart of a person's life. Our success is not measured by how many converts we "made." In the end if people come to faith in Jesus Christ, it's because of God's grace working in their lives. We do not save them; we simply point them to the Savior. This book gives us practical advice. What an awesome privilege to be one of God's instruments!

Inspirational & eye-opening :)
How To Give Away Your Faith is an ingenious book that points the followers of Christ to where their ministry should be focused: on showing and telling others about Him. Paul E. Little's book is very helpful in showing where our attitudes should be in witnessing (see Chapter 2: The Effective Ambassador) and how to do so properly (see chapter 3: How To Witness). In addition to these essential areas, Little explains common questions that non-Christians and some Christians ask (see Why We Believe, chapter 6). Probably the most important part of this book is Chapter 5: What Is Out Message? It is crucial for Believers to know what they believe, how to express such things, and what relevant facts must be shared in witnessing.

There are simply too many intriguing scenes in this text to mention here, so I will simply state those that most affected me. It is amazing that somewhere in every chapter was a concept I had been longing to grasp, something I knew I had needed to know. And then there were such things I had heard before, yet saw in a new light (such as the "Roman Road" in Chapter 5: What Is Our Message?). In my sincerest opinion, it is essential that the entire book be read. I have learned more than I ever thought possible with this book. Paul Little covers almost every known topic needed in witnessing.

Just so you know, this book (though revised) was originally written in 1966. And so, society having changed slightly since then (and since it was revised in 1988), the dialog and certain phrases, etc. are not completely relevant (yet still understandable). Such things as neighbors having close friendships are mostly restricted to television now in our busy 21st-Century society. Also, words such as "phooey" and "outlandish" are used every now and then. Yet, this book is still widely read, used, understandable, and effective. Its importance cannot be understated. Evangelist Billy Graham was quoted describing How To Give Away Your Faith as "A tremendous help in witnessing."

An excellent, practical book on sharing the Gospel!
I found this book to be one of the best I have read on the topic of evangelism. Mr. Little combines personal experience(of which I expect he had plenty) with solid Christian principles. He addresses many real life situations that you will encounter as you share your faith in a down-to-earth way that can be understood by all. The author writes in a way that makes you feel like you are being "discipled" by a true friend. Paul's sense of humor is also evident and is an encouragement to those that may be intimidated by this topic. I whole heartedly recommend this book to those who have a desire to "give away their faith"!

Tough Love for Modern Day Parents
Paul Vaughn is a professional who has personally tutored and guided over 5000 kids. He has seen it all, heard it all, and, from the rigors of his personal experience, understands most of it all. At a bargain price, he makes available to the parenting masses a great deal of the child-rearing and education-enhancing tips which he has reaped across a career spanning decades.

Paul understands that the modern parent may WANT the best for their child, but, in the process of GIVING the best to their child, often also hinders the child's esteem, independence, determination, and discipline. Somehow, we as modern parents, have forgotten how to give our children the structure and have forgotten how to teach them the discipline they need to become successful and independent adults.

HOW TO HELP YOUR CHILD SUCCESSFULLY THROUGH SCHOOL AND INTO THE BETTER COLLEGES gives parents straight-forward advice on how to help your child develop traits early on which enable them to learn. Traits which enable them to control and focus their energies and efforts. And, which ultimately, enable them to qualify for advancement through grade schools, high schools, and into the better colleges.

Sometimes listening to Paul's advice is hard. You may have a hunch that he is right, but changing your routine would prove difficult. Sometimes you sense he is right-on without any effort on your part at all. But however you feel about his advice, his professional opinion can only expand your understanding of how to help your child succeed in learning. And ultimately, your child's ability to learn becomes their ability to succeed in life.

My vote: 5 stars!

ps: Both of my college age kids are happy, healthy, and succeeding at top colleges.

Thanks, Paul.

Excellent information for raising kids.
"Since I have four children someone had given me these CDs for a present but I didn't get around to listening of quite awhile. Wrong! I should have listened earlier to this guy because so much of what he says applies to my kids who are all of different ages, from third grade through senior year. Making up for lost time, I've now listened to them four times and plan to
hear them again."

Informative And Very, Very funny
Author Vaughn has chosen the right medium to get across his "how to" school suggestions to the listener. He tries successfully to make the medicine go down into the parents more easily with his off the wall humor. I liked it better than book form because my wife and I can listen over and over again together. We now understand that from preschool right through high school, we as their parents have more to do with our four kids's succcess in school than any other single factor. It sure helps to know the danger signals. Wish we had it for the first two!

Mighty Minns/strikes again
This book should inflame every reader to demand congress to taken action and slay this beast. From the TERMINATOR of the HOBBLE IN BOSTON to the Lawlessness of the Courts in Buford & SON to the OKLAHOMA WITCH TRIAL ,Minns exsposes the underbelly of the beast.

Finally, a factual book about the dark side of the IRS
I am an economics professor at a university located in Washington State. I recently received a copy of Mr. Minn's book from a friend of mine at the Seattle Times. I think I have read every major book on the IRS, but Mr. Minn's book provides new facts and information. Minns not only dispells any doubts that taxpayers may have about the ruthless antics of the IRS, but he also provides valuable tips and information about tax code, tax shelters, offshore banking and important guidelines for staying out of harm's way with the IRS. I was extremely moved as he shared the blow-by-blow accounts of his IRS court cases, and was appauled by the devastating and unconscionable acts that some IRS agents employed in order to bring about charges of tax evasion. From one who has considered himself an expert on tax law and the IRS, my hat is off to this vallant crusader. I was highly enlightened and recommend this book to any taxpayer who wishes to avoid the attention of the IRS.

If you file a Tax Return, this book is a must read!!
Here I am in the beginning of what promises to be the busiest "tax season" ever, and into my office comes "How to Survive the IRS", a pulse quickening, rapid read of struggles with the formidable Internal Revenue Service by one of the great champions of the people. I couldn't put it down! Unlike other lawyers who surrender to the IRS' maze of bureaucracy and deceptions, Michael Minns goes in with the singular intent to fight and win for his clients who have been wronged. His insight and tenacity are unparalleled, his candor refreshing and his integrity embraced by those of us who strive daily to right the wrongs to our fellow citizens. I highly recommend this book to all of my clients and tell them to pass it on. His first book "The Underground Lawyer" was just a interesting and is a must read for everyone who needs a lawyer.
