Small Favors
Published in Paperback by Fantagraphics Books (October, 2002)
Authors: Colleen Coover and Paul Tobin
Amazon base price: $14.95
Average review score:

Playful, light-hearted lesbian erotica... Very Sweet.
This TPB (Trade Paper-Back) collects issues #1-4 of Colleen Coover's beloved comic-book series about Annie and the little fairy (Nibbil) who's sent to watch over her.

Unlike most comic-book erotica, which tends to be very mean-spirited and somewhat ugly, this series is extremely playful and light. The sex is fun, silly, and occasionally downright erotic!

If you're looking for thought-provoking literature, this definitely aint it, but if you're looking for something fun and kinky, Small Favors is da bomb!

Small Gas Engines: How to Repair and Maintain Them

Best Well Illustrated And Understandable Book I Have Found
If you never understood how small gas engines work and want to learn, this is the book for you. After having read this book, I was able to clean, repair and replace all gaskets and valves on a a 1967 rototiller, properly set the idle and fuel mixture for that machine as well as a Stihl chain saw, and properly care for two lawn mowers. The book is dated, somewhat, but it is extremely well illustrated. If you own older mowers, chain saws or lawn mowers, the illustrations may duplicate what you own and, if not, small engines all work on the same basic principles-- so that you can easily figure out what to do with a new machine in most cases. This was a " Popular Science" book for those old enough to know what that means!!! Enjoy.

I'm glad its back in print--I wore out my '87 edition.
Paul St. Pierre does for ranchers in British Columbia what James Herriott does for animals in Yorkshire. He has a knack for turning some of the most insignificant events of daily life into interesting stories. His characters start out as impulsive oddballs, but by the end of the story they become quite rational folks. This is one of those books that sneaks up on you. The first time I read it I thought it was entertaining, but nothing to visit again. But every once in a while one of the characters from the book pops into my mind and I dwell on the character and story for a few days. I usually re-read it every couple of years (I have a worn 1987 edition, now in retirement.)

A worthwhile read for fans of Auster and film-making alike
I bought this title as a long time fan of Auster and also of the two films. It is the first and only screenplay book I have bought as I find them generally redundant, always inferior to the film, and usually not very readable. Firstly, the screenplay, written by Auster is very readable as the film is mostly dialogue and as such flows nicely, even as a script, not bogged down with description of actions, or camera angles. If you are a fan of the film, there is little new here, though there are a few lines of dialogue that weren't in the final cut. The transcript of Blue in the Face is exactly what you see on screen as this film was mostly improvised. Auster also includes his lengthy notes to the actors about their scenes and this is enlightening as it shows which ideas made the film and which ones didn't, and of those that made it, which ones worked or not. There is also an in-depth interview with Auster about the two films which is very good indeed and is both informative and witty. Finally, there is the original short story "Auggie Wren's Christmas Story" which was the original inspiration for "Smoke" If you've seen the film, you'll know the tale but it is great to see the original version in print, and interesting to see how it made the tarnsition to the screen. All in all a very worthwhile and highly readable collection.

Sniffy's Icehouse

A Storyteller's Tale of Ancient Days
In a world of ever encroaching technological advances, that rob us of our connection with the natural world, and our eternal bond with each other, along comes a tale that rips the curtain of time away, to a simpler era - the Ice Age. In Paul Beach's new novel, Sniffy's Icehouse, just such an experience, can be found. His is a gift for storytelling that grabs hold of the reader from the very beginning and doesn't let go until the complete story has unfolded, and the last page has been turned. For me, it was two full days of escape into an ancient world, once known only to my ancestors, the smell of burnt embers that faded into the brutal cold winter's night as I crept ever closer to the fire to listen to this storyteller's tale of ancient days, and the people that populated them. For this is more than a mere novel, it is a time capsule to the distant past, a view into the misty edges of time, to "see and share" the experiences of seven women and the lives they touched. Their names are Sniffy, Raven, Fruity, Akyla, Leasa, Lady and Jacinta. They along with the rest of cast of characters given breath by this storyteller's craft, tell the tale of great mammoth hunts and prehistoric life, in an Ice Age long forgotten by modern man. Modern readers will be shocked to learn how similar we are these characters and their relationships to each other. Humans haven't changed, it's just the differences in the landscape , ours is pre-planned and tamed, theirs was uncharted and brutal. Do not miss this golden opportunity to return to our past, and re-capture the wonder of the natural world in all it's splendor, and perhaps feel a kinship with these ancient people from an ice-covered landscape that once was mankind's. A perfectly told saga, just the ticket to cool off the blistering heat of summer's glaring sun. Come and feel the coolness of " Sniffy's Icehouse", it will be a feeling that will linger, long after the last word is read.

A great value if you can't afford the full Humann set
This is a great book for snorkelers and beginning divers! The color photographs are beautiful and make identification easy. Although this small book is nowhere near as comprehensive as Humann's complete reef identification set, it's a great bargain for those wanting to know the names of most of the common things they see when snorkeling in the Caribbean. The book also contains some valuable pointers about which plants and animals should be approached with caution, how to treat stings, and other interesting facts. It's disappointing that there are so many typos, especially considering that there is relatively little text in the book.

Absolutely Pure Glenn Brown
I was a student of Glenn Brown at Sam Houston State University in the late 1960s. We knew of some of the trials and tribulations of his life, like being a POW in Korea and we knew of his dry wit. These writings, done late in his life, protray him as we knew him, witty and introspective. In the book he speaks of his love for his family and his God. What more of a legacy could a man leave for his family.

It is not so much what Mr.Brown says in the book, but the way he says it. Pure Glenn Brown. The man had a distinctive way of telling a story. Those who never met Mr. Brown will appreciate his storytelling skills.
