Mother Father Deaf: Living Between Sound and Silence
Published in Hardcover by Harvard Univ Pr (April, 1994)
Author: Paul Preston
Amazon base price: $27.50
Used price: $11.95
Average review score:

Excellent, informative and unbiased.
As another native signer, I was quite pleased with Preston's book for it's well-roundedness. Preston does not seem to have a particular agenda he is trying to extoll. The variety of voices in this book show that people perceive similar circumstances differently. A much needed book!

Mothers are Like That
I give this book 5 stars because of the illustration that Paul Carrick displays. I have a eleven month old daughter and she loves to be read to and the pictures just caught her eyes and kept her with me till the end of the story. Everybody knows how hard that is. I would reccomend this to anybody with children.

Attractive, engaging, informative, beautifully produced.

Mr. Persnickety and Cat Lady
Published in Hardcover by Orchard Books (September, 2000)

A fun book about getting along
The situation is all too familiar -- two next door neighbors just don't get along and go out of their way to make life difficult. The man (the bowtie-wearing Mr. Persnickety) doesn't like cats and his neighbor (the Cat Lady)has a houseful of them. One day, the man's house is invaded by mice. He tries traps, but the mice are too smart. Finally, the man swallows his pride and asks the Cat Lady if he can borrow the cats. The cats go next door and do what cats do best. When the Cat Lady rounds up her cats to take them home, the man thanks her and introduces himself (he's not really Mr. Persnickety). She, in turn, tells him her name (it's not really the Cat Lady). The two then become real neighbors. Author/illustrator Paul Brett Johnson has put together a picture book that makes you laugh while it teaches a lesson in acceptance.

The Mud Family
Ms. James's book entitled, "The Mud Family" is a very heartwarming and culturally sound book. I am an elementary school teacher. I read "The Mud Family" to my second graders every year in November when we study Native American traditions. I have several copies of this book so that my students can read it together in small groups or pairs. It's a wonderful read-aloud, too!

Thank You!!!
I am the white partner an interracial relationship, and the mother of a beautiful biracial daughter. I came across this book years ago in my college library, and I loved it so much that I special ordered a copy of it through a local bookstore. I would just like to say thank you to the authors for writing it!

Thank you...

...for not stereotyping, analyzing, or otherwise trying to dissect interracial relationships.

...for letting the voices of the interracial families in the book shine through.

...for respectfully showing interracial families as normal, wonderful and beautiful!

...for the quote given by one of the people interviewed for the book - a white man married to a black woman took his son's pictures to a photo shop to be developed. When he returned to pick up the pictures, the white clerk at the store commented on how handsome the boy is, and told the boy's father: "Biracial children are the most beautiful children. They are God's way of showing the world that there shouldn't be bigotry". That quote made reading the book worthwhile!

Thank you indeed!
