A great book for an election year!
Political speechwriter Ronald Lithgow is abducted by aliens and, upon his return, his body had taken on a cybernetic form that resembles concrete. Who knows why? Maybe aliens don't like speechwriters.

Regardless of his new form, Lithgow becomes a major celebrity and a modern-day sideshow freak. Sounds like a political speechwriter to me!

In "Concrete: Complete Short Stories 1986-89," character originator Paul Chadwick has gathered his popular stories of the "hard-as-a-rock" hero into one complete tale. "Concrete" first appeared as a part of the "Dark Horse Presents" anthology comic series, and garnered a legion of faithful fans over the years.

So, in this political year, what is more appropriate than a comic book about a political speechwriter? Maybe George and Al would like to get in touch with this guy!

Awesome revisionist history of Concrete.
This re-evaluates the origin of Concrete once the script for the feature film was written. It is great (as I hope the movie will be...). There is also an interesting section on history of certain Concrete comic covers.

Stories About A Gentle Giant
Here's a creature from the comic book world that hasn't recieved the attention he deserves. Paul Chadwick's Concrete is a believable character that, probably because he deals only with real situations, has never become as popular as he deserves.

In these series of stories (which are not the complete Concrete as the title supposes), we see this man, who had been converted to a creature who is composed of concrete like element being exploited by a senator during a mine failure, his origins, rescuing his friends from a ship wreck, and other exploits.

But what is most heartening about these stories is that, regardless of his situation in life, Concrete retains an overall humane and gentle man.

A re-readable tale
Although not as humorous as "Showdown at Lonesome Pellet", this a fascinating book. A child who reads it (or to whom it is read) at age five will enjoy it, and then make new discoveries as it is re-read years later...

Confederate Money Insights
This book is great!! It accurately tracks much of the war. The adventure brings this time period alive and answers many questions about how the war actual ended for the South in Florida. The decline in the value of Confederate money, The benevelance of the people of the time, and the tendency to do good in hard times are central themes of the book. One is caught up in the adventure to the point that it is hard to put the book down. The battles at Shiloh Church, Chicamauga, and Olustee receive excellent coverage. However, the best parts to me were rescue of some white slaves that Sherman sent north, and the daring raid on the Confederate treasury as the war ended and the treasury was being divided in Archer Florida. A must read.

Very touching book
I found this book with a highly social impact, it is a very rational viewpoint of the reality of the pro-detah mentality. I felt I was traveling throughout the world with the author who has very good talent to describe the atmosphere where he was. I highly recommend this book.

A light in the darkness
Paul Ricoeur's conflict of interpretation represents the (I think successful) attempt to provide a way to get out of the deconstruction of the self operated by Freud and the Psychanalysis.

It also gives a great theory about the simbolic use of the language.

The text might results sometimes difficult to an unprepared reader.

A Supportive Guide for Soon-to-Be Dads
Who do women turn to for information when they're pregnant? Many times they know other women who have either been through a pregnancy, or who are pregnant at the same time as they are. Who do the soon-to-be husbands turn to? Other men or women? I tend to think not. Let's face it...it's easier for women to discuss their pregnancies than it is for their husbands. Actually, it's easier for women to discuss lots of things :-). So if men don't turn to anyone else, where can they turn to to find the answers to their many questions about their wife's pregnancy? One good source is the book, "Congratulations, You're Gonna Be a Dad," by Paul & Pam Pettit.

As a mother, I was able to relate to many of the situations in the book. Men, on the other hand, will certainly gain a lot of knowledge, and read what it's like to be a dad from the many stories written by fathers. Soon-to-be dads will learn what it means when someone tells their wife that they are "glowing;" what a "growth spurt" is; and many more useful facts about pregnancy and fatherhood. And women...men will also get some tips on how to prevent and treat diaper rash -- now there's no excuse! I think soon-to-be fathers will gain a little more respect for women, pregnancy, and the whole process of reproduction after they've read this book :-).

My ParenTime recommends "Congratulations Youre Gonna Be a Dad" - It's informative, enlightening, a joy to read, and will help men prepare a little more mentally, for an event that will soon change the rest of their lives.
