There's Hope for America's Youth
Published in Paperback by Granville Island/Peanut Butter Publishing (18 June, 2001)
Author: Paul Michael Gordon
Amazon base price: $15.00
Buy one from zShops for: $3.99
Average review score:

Hurrendous
This book is disgusting. It is a prime example of the ease in which complete garbage is accepted and enjoyed by hordes of the faithless. Gordon wants to be accepted and listened to and taken seriously and he feels that the best way to do this is to first convince people that he is a hero by involving himself in typical and mundane activities that somehow have been recognized as extraordinary. The fact that a book of this title and this caliber was ever published, and that it was written by Paul Gordon, is a testament to a slow deterioration of thought slowy enveloping the many lazy, ignoramuses that need a teenage messiah to help them through their petty troubles. Thank you, Paul, for contributing to this deterioration and to the deterioration and eventual destruction of your mind and your body. I can only hope that someday you realize that you have failed to understand anything about yourself and you choose to ignore your worthless external pursuits of grandeur and importance. I doubt this will ever happen though. I have no faith in you whatsoever. There may be hope in america's youth, as you say, but there is certainly no hope in Paul Gordon.

First book about Bruce is not worth reading.
I have often wondered how no one has written a book before about Bruce Cockburn considering the consistently amazing quality of his work over the last 3 decades. If you are looking forward to this one like I was, let me do you a favor: Save your money and wait for Bruce book # 2. I read the book more for the Cockburn content than the Cohen. I am only familiar with Leonard Cohen's last couple of albums (I found "The Future" to be excellent), but I have been an avid Bruce fan for the better part of two decades. About two thirds of the book is devoted to Bruce (and I will devote my comments to that). I found the book completely disappointing. The first problem is that Nonnekes deals strictly with the lyrics completely apart from the music. There is absolutely no discussion of the performances (in the studio or live), the passion and manner of delivery. There is also no context of Bruce's known feelings from interviews, comments at shows, etc. It is as if Nonnekes wrote the entire book by just reading Cockburn lyrics and was unaware of Bruce's performance or comments about any of these lyrics. Nonnekes takes a scholarly approach that will put off most readers. I consider myself to be of at least average intelligence (I enjoyed Michael Gray's 900 page Dylan commentary Song and Dance Man 3) but I was bored by Nonneke's over-analysis of songs that often speak for themselves. Also, I personally found much of the analysis to be way off the mark of anything I have ever gotten from Bruce's work myself or from his own comments. A book like this should illuminate an artist's work, but there are few revelations here.

Tibetan Newspaper Reader

don't buy it
This book is very bad. The author doesn't really know Tibetan very well and makes a lot of mistakes. So trying to learn Tibetan reading this book creates more confusion than benefit.

To the Land Where the Sun Might Never Set: The Story of Newgrange
Published in Paperback by Roberts Rinehart Pub (March, 1996)
Author: Paul Francis
Amazon base price: $6.95
Used price: $9.08
Average review score:

My encyclopedia has more information on Newgrange
This "book" is apparently aimed at the 3-10 year-old age group. It reads as a "Dick & Jane" book. No photos and "illustrated" by a comic-book wanna'- be artist. Fifteen "pages" of "text", 1-3 paragraphs each. An insult to Celtic/Irish heritage. Totally worthless.

VERY BAD
When I got this book I wanted to learn windows programming. To start with, the writer dosen't explain what each of the lines of text is doing. This is a major problem, and worse of all some of the code wouldn't work. I have a Borland compiler and I set it to what it told me to. Maybe my compiler is out of date.

yuck
Let's get two things straight:

1) There is no such word as "ufology" nor could there ever be. Only someone with the most execrable taste and no understanding
of language or logic whatsoever could proffer such a monstrosity.

2) "U.F.O" stands for "Unidentified Flying Object". Do U.F.O.'s exist? Until the flying objects in question are identified, of course. There is no mystery here. (A large percentage turn out not to have flying at all, so it might have been better to call them "unidentified apparently flying objects" or "unidentified sky phenomena", but at this point we're pretty much stuck with "unidentified flying objects". Oh, well.)

Understanding Aerodynamic Characteristics of Windsurfing
Published in Paperback by Vantage Press (December, 1992)
Author: Paul Ng
Amazon base price: $12.95
Average review score:

Poorly written, sophomoric, incorrect analysis
This book is disorganized, poorly written and has the feel of a hastily assembled undergraduate research project. Far worse, the "analysis" is ill conceived and largely incorrect. It is difficult to understand why this work was ever printed. It certainly should not be supported by further sales. The author should be ashamed of this effort.

In fact, I think he may realize how weak his work was and attempted to hide the lack of substance by adopting the pontificating verbiage of a bored college professor. The grating style is compounded by his lack of fluency in english -- obviously not the author's native language.

It is clear to me that he doesn't understand the basic physics of a vessel sailing in equilibrium between aerodynamic and hydrodynamic forces. Nor can he possibly be a good windsurfer. A much better explanation of the physics of sailing is in "The Symmetry of Sailing" by Ross Garrett, or "Aerodyanamics of Sailing" by Marchaj. Indeed, there are some problems which are unique to windsurfing -- unfortunately, the author neither addresses or understands them.

I have an MS in Naval Architecture (UC Berkeley hydrodynamics), and work as a naval architect. I have lectured on the subject at Cal, and am in the top level of windsurfers in San Francisco Bay. I remain very interested in this subject and do not claim to understand it fully; however, I am sorry I bought this book and urge you to choose another title.
