A very helpful resource
I first purchased Beating the College Blues, about five years ago, while I was an undecided and depressed college student dealing with many of the issues discussed in this book. Dr. Grayson and Dr. Meilman present frequently asked counseling session questions, culled from their experiences with over 4000 college students, and provide short, concise and USEFUL answers. Topics range from beginning college to life after graduation....and everything in between! There are chapters dealing with academic issues, personal issues, family issues, love and sex, common disorders, and even a chapter on deciding if professional counseling is something a particular reader may want to pursue. Their advice was extremely useful for me and as a future student services professional it provided an invaluable and insightful look into the unique problems encountered by the college population.. I would highly recommend this book to college students, their families, and to anyone who is interested in working with this unique and exciting group.

Twists and turns
It leads you one way and takes you another. Without giving too much of the plot away I must reccomend this as a "must read" for anyone looking for a fresh author to try out before they become a "star" and lose their unique style of writing. Very well done.

Oh, the twists and turns.....
For being a small publishing house book, I was surprised at the depth of the story. It leads you in directions that leave the reader scratching his head but yearning for more. I won't say more since I dont want to give any of the story away, but it is a must read!

Making Word Work into Word Play
Often learning literary terms and how to use them can be a challenge. This book makes learning the terms both amusing and enjoyable. With a small selection to read each day of the year this book allows for easy learning everyday of the year. Espy's creative set up of the book covers everything from Acronyms to Univocalic writing. Each day with a differently constructed style and purpose this book is excellent for most age levels and can be read at any pace though it is meant to last an entire year.

A compilation of the wordmaster's masterpiece!
I have collected each of Espy's books as they have appeared; they occupy center place on my shelves of language books. The original "Almanac" and "Another Almanac" blew me away when they came out about 20+ years ago. I tried so hard to limit myself to one page a day so they would each last a year - they are almanacs, after all - but failed miserably - I remember sitting in bed with the flu and reading through both books in three days, giggling and chortling and slack-jawed with amazement the whole time.

Willard Espy is a true master - creative, erudite, knowledgeable, and howlingly funny. His Higgledy-Piddledy about Dorothy Thompson is burned into my brain for good. His ability to make the language dance is unequaled by any other writer I have read. Safire, Lederer, and Newman are articulate, yes, but not half as goofily inventive or funny, and they take themselves very much more seriously than Espy does, which is not at all. This man disproves the adage that no one is great all the time - he is.

Having said all that, I must confess that I haven't seen this Compilation - my comments are based on the absolute conviction that any compilation of brilliant material must, of necessity, be equally brilliant. I have spent the past 20 years lending out my copies of the two originals from which this volume is drawn, listening to people giggle over the cubicle walls, and plotting diabolical conseqences when they weren't returned. They are both ragged and bulging with yellow stickies - my own quick-reference system - so I can easily find and re-delight in my favorites when I need an Espyfix.

The man is gone from our midst now, so there will be no more crazy pleasure from him, and his original books are long out of print. So buy this one, I say, and prepare to laugh and be awed all at once by this explosion of sheer linquistic virtuosity.

YOU'LL LAUGH OUT LOUD
Don't even think of reading this book while your partner is sleeping beside you in bed. You're sure to wake them with uncontrollable giggles. This is a perfect book for taking on a trip, the beach, or anywhere else you want to kick back and enjoy the true fumbles and foibles of fellow humans. A thoroughly enjoyable read, easily finished in one sitting, or savored one anecdote at a time whenever you need a lift. Don't miss it. Buy several copies and give as gifts to everyone that likes to laugh (or needs to).

Touching, humorous tales common to the human experience
When I lived in Rochester MN in the early '90s I discovered "Bulletin Board" and became an avid reader. The short tales of everyday people and their everyday experiences have made me laugh, cry and ponder; the real meaning of life really is in the day to day interactions we all have with each other and with our families. This book is a great collection of some of the best stories on BB. I loved it!

The Bible in Greek Christian Antiquity (The Bible in Early Christianity , So3)
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Notre Dame Pr (October, 1997)
Author: Paul M. Blowers
Amazon base price: $60.00
Average review score:

Excellent overview of the early church theology
Exceptional scholarship. The book is arranged chronologically covering the development of the scriptural canon and the theology surrounding the use of it. Good use of notes and a bibliography for supporting documentation. If you are interested in the early church this is a good place to start. If you are already knowledgeable of the early church you will still get a lot out of this scholarly book.

Want to know more about the early church and the Bible?
This collection of essays about the use of the Scriptures in the early church is valuable to any student of the early church or of the Scriptures. Something often missing from commentaries on the Scriptures is an understanding of how they were used and received by the early church. This information ought to inform our methods for reading and using the Scriptures, as well as our understanding of them.

The essays on early liturgies, Christian art (i.e. iconography) and martyrs are probably the best in the collection, but those on asceticism and the use of the Bible by the early Bishops of the Church such as Iranaeus of Lyon are quite good as well.

Despite the price, this is a "must have" for any serious student of Church History or the Bible.

Great for Kids and the whole family!
I got this book and another by Maxwell, A Paw Island Christmas. After reading those with my family I got the Mixed-up Pup. These are great books, very easy to read and most enjoyable. The music on the CDs was wonderful. I checked out the web site, pawisland.com, and the kids can't get enough of it. Defintely looking forward to more by this author.

My Niece Loves the Books
I got copies of all the Paw Island books, and my niece lovesthem. The artwork is fantastic, and the stories very engaging foryoung children. We ended up getting her all the little plastic characters she liked it so much. Get the book, you will be happy you did. END

The first great book on music of the millenium
I have never read a book like this one before.
So well written and illustrated. It is forwarded
by Vladimir Ashkenazy. The book starts with a section
about music in non-western civilizations, there it
explains the role of music in early cultures of the world,
From Ancient Egypt, to China; from the Ancient American
cultures, to Africa; and from Oceania to the near east to
the Holy Roman Empire, this section of the book has it all.
Then the book is divided in by order of musical periods
thru the ages. Starting with the medieval era, it lists
key events of this period, starting in the 800's. It mentions
and tells about the great names of the era in music,
including de Vitry(1291-1361) and Machaut(1300-1377).
It also explains such teaching devices as the 'Guidonian Hand'.
Then comes the Renaissance, here, it explains the rise
of humanism, it speaks also of major events of the time.
It also tells a bit about the Reinassance courts of Europe
and the composers of the time:Cristobal de Morales(1500-53)
Thomas Morley(1557-1602), Orlande de Lasuss(1532-94). This
section also speaks of the rise of instruments.
One to the Baroque where the where we are start seeing the
the start of new musical forms and procedures, sucha as the
masque, the music drama, the French grand motet. Also music in tenary form etc. The section on the classical period again famous
composers and musicians, explinations of classicism, rococco, and the instruments of the time.More on composers, specially Mozart and Beethoven. On to the the romantic period where we start
to see development in musical instruments, and styles, we also
see how the orchestra gets bigger. Finally, the book comes to
the early and late 20th century. The book does a wonderful job, pictures and tales of 20th century composers. This is the first
book that I have where I find a picture of John Adams and Sofia Gubaidulina in in the same book, in this book, for the first time also, our contemporary composers are treated with great respect, and as equal to their counterparts of the bygone ages. I picture that I like very much is in PG.324 where Cage, and Boulez shake hands in fron of Massien. The art work is of the best quality. This is indeed a good book that I recomend to every classical music lover, and friend. The amazon.com price is so
affordable, and competitive.

Valuable both as a reference and for browsing
A team of writers and scholars compiled the Encyclopedia Of Classical Music, an in-depth encyclopedia of classical music which packs in over 900 color illustrations to accompany a thorough history and survey which extends from ancient through modern times. Introductions for each major period includes surveys of key composers, changes in musical styles, forms, and analysis of instruments. Recommended CD listings, a glossary and extensive discography and bibliography, and subject and name indexes make this valuable both as a reference and for browsing.

Reference book COMPLETE!!!
This is by far one of the most extensive books concerning the sport of billiards and pool. I often go to this resource before writing for pool publications; I also use it as a guide when shopping either online or traveling. There is more information here than perhaps EVER gathered in one book. Excellent photos and history in the wonderful reference material. If you are interested at all in this sport this is a must have! Worth every penny.

a must for all
This book captures the vivid history of a sport that has until recently been relatively unknown. Not onlyu in my opinion does this book capture the origins of the sport in a way never seen before as a piece of art it is relatively uncomprimised in the industry today.

Biophysical Chemistry: Techniques for the Study of Biological Structure and Function

Very detailed explanation of the theory
I got this book to learn more about various biophysical techniques. I have been doing research in this area for a few years and felt it was high time to get some formal explanations of the theory behind all the experiments that I do.
The book presents a detailed description and account of the theory of numerous techniques including absorption and emmission spectroscopy, NMR, CD, crystallography, chromatography, electrophoresis and many other methods.
Although the authors claim that readers need not have any experience in physical chemistry I think this is a little far fetched. Having just taken a course in quantum mechanics, I still struggled through some of the derivations. I think this is a good book for people who either have had prior experience with the field of biophysics, or have a strong mathematical background. This book is not a walk through the park. There are many equations and at times more advanced mathematical techniques such as fourier analysis or matrix algebra are used. If you want an introduction to biophysics, you're better off using an easier, less mathematically rigourous book. For example, if you're interested in spectroscopy, there is a simpler book called Biological Spectroscopy by Campbell and Dwek. However, if you are interested in the theory behind these important techniques and don't mind a little math, this is the book for you. Biophysics is an ever expanding and exciting field; this book can show you why!

Indespensable series-most useful volume for serious biosci.
I used the 1980 edition of this series at UC Berkeley when studying Biophysics there, then needed it for a class in molecular biology. The series takes the most precise examination of the functioning and theory with serious treatment employing calculus to describe dynamic processes in contrast to many other texts that offer only cartoons, photographs and simple math for the mathematically challenged undergraduate. After I graduated, the series was the only indespensable textbook for me in my research at Cetus Corporation where the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) was developed. The inventor of PCR (Kary Mullis) shared the Nobel prize for chemistry for the process in 1993. My research on HIV was illuminated by the Cantor & Schimmel series and I learned the fundamentals of unfamiliar methods by use of this particular volume of the series. It's no wonder that my original copy disappered. I look forward to getting the 1997 edition of this volume.
