Robert Lowell - Poet, Puritan, Prophet
Robert Lowell has always seemed to me to be just out of reach. I was too young to witness his poetry readings to the Washington crowds protesting the war in Vietnam. By the time I was set "Skunk Hour" in my final year of secondary schooling, Lowell had been dead for a half dozen years. Based on Lowell's letters, poetry and critism and of those who knew him; this work is an exhaustive and comprehensive account of the poet's priveliged and frequently turbulent life. His three marriages are discussed, as are his spell in jail,( as a Conscientious Objector)and his numerous admissions to psychiatric hospital due to manic depression. From his aristocratic but dysfunctional childhood to his last years, the reader is made aware of Lowell's progression and prowess as a poet. Of fascination too is his interactions with other great poets, most notably Frost, Pound and Eliot; the latter described as 'The Master', a mantle passed to Lowell on Eliot's death. "Lost Puritan" is illuminating and revealing, it will bring Lowell into reach for anyone who is an afficianado of his poetry. A scholarly salute to the greatest poet of the second half of the twentieth century.

Soul enhancing proof of love in a poetry of death.
This is a book to carry with you. Unfortunately I did, and lost it. The effort I've put into trying to get another copy is testament to the power and eloquence of the eighteen poems it contains. This work juxtaposes the power of love and the raveges of death with humbling clraity and emotion. I used it to uplift me when I lost faith in life, and inspire me when I lost direction in my work. Mr Monette says in his preface that it was written almost without pause in the months after his lover's death. The immediacy of his grief, the violence in his anger and the vivid importance of his memories take you with terryfying force into those months. And when you are there, you cannot help but feel the anger and injustice and, overwhelmingly, feel the love that he and Roger shared. I sound sycophantic. I know. But this book puts me in a difficult position becuse it is truly how I feel. When promised love goes wrong, I read these poems, always alone and late at night. When I can't remember why I spend my days thinking up ways to stop more gay men becomming infected with HIV, I read these poems to remind me what happens when people are ignored. I'm hoping a copy can be found to replace the one I lost.

An enchanting tale of wonder and love. It is a beautiful story combining the magic of folklore with the magic of alternate forms of communication. Children love it for the magical content. Adults will love it for the sensitive introduction to Native American myth and legend.

Yummy Hetero and Lesbian BDSM
This book takes place entirely on the estate of an aristocratic widow in turn of the century Russia. Her servant girls are slaves to her perverse and cruel lesbian whims. Her nephew returns home from the military towards the beginning of the book with a dancer from moscow who he plans to exploit for the amusement of his aunt and himself. He also takes time to sample lots of servant girls, all very well-described. Plenty of whippings, forced sex, and humiliation. This is one of the only books of this type I have read and it definately got me sweating! Besides the occasional branding, I found all the erotic situations very exciting. It's the kind of content I was unable to stop reading, but still made me feel a little guilty for enjoying the idea of such victimizations. All in all a must read for fans of erotic liturature

I Never Knew...
That the Inuits were taken from their Arctic tundra to settlement camps by the Canadian government. Maata's family is forced to leave their home and they are rudely dumped in a freezing and empty place and basically left to die. There is, however, plenty of alcohol. It is easy to see what the government hoped was in store for all the Inuits. In this story, they do have their champions. These come in the form of explorers who are there to learn the Inuit ways and map and study the area. Although it is freezing and harsh, we are able to see the amazing beauty of life and the cold landscape. We understand why Maata's mother wants her to learn both her own and the English way of life. She will be a bridge for both worlds. When the explorers take Maata to be their guide on an expedition, all is almost lost.
I enjoyed going along with Maata on all her journeys.
