The Green King - Paul Loup Sulitzer
The Green King is my all-time favorite book. I read it for the first time when on vacation in Aruba in '85 and have read it at least three times since. I found a first print in hardcover and it is the jewel of my book collection.

Reb Michael Klimrod's journey from a nazi death camp to the richest man in the world without anyone knowing him is remarkable. The detail that Sulitzer maintains in his book of the men that kept this secret is breath taking; the web of financial companies and transactions is exhilarating. This is a great book for anyone that enjoys high finance and a desire to fulfill a dream. 5 Stars are not enough for this book.

Read this book and find your place in this world.....
.......especially if you are just starting out (your life that is) and things arent looking too good. I read this book about 14 years ago when I was 17 living in Kashmir and not in a very positive frame of mind. It was an amazingly inspirational experience reading this book. I still remember reading it very fast even though it was very big but towards the end I slowed down to savour this almost other life I was immersed in. It is an amazing epic that definitely has had an influence on my life, although I don't know what all to attribute to the book but certainly an impossible amount of positivity - that has even weathered and survived the market conditions during the current dotcom demise ;^) - comes to mind.

The Green King to this day remains my favorite book of all time, although Frank Herbert's Dune series comes in a close second. After chancing upon the book here on amazon and refreshing my memory of it I definitely want to get hold of a copy and read it again.

After 12 years, this story still inpires me
I read The Green King over a decade ago. It has been, and still is, one of the biggest influences of my life, supplying me with perseverance, humility and strength. I can't believe how one story has been able to continually provide me with lessons about who we are, accepting what we have, and taking action in a way that is a win-win for everyone involved. It has taught me that everything we do has an impact, eventually, on everyone else in the world, so we should choose how we do things with care.

This book is about a man who is stripped of his identity and possessions, and reborn. He then manages to be the richest man on earth, through a very unconventional path. He can create from nothing, illustrating the point that it is not what we know or have, but how we take action that determines our power. He also know the power of contribution - that the only way to truly be successful is through creating a platform for others to win. Finally, he embodies integrity - the glue that binds all that he has relationhips with to be fiercely loyal to him.

I believe that I am in the process of changing the world. I am the head of a successful company now and have not sold myself out to get it there. This lessons from this book was a guiding spirit of how I shaped my relationships to get this company to where it is today. I am fortunate to have this book cross my path. I will feel more fortunate if if crosses my path again, because I have since lost it! (It's in one of my college boxes in my parent's storage room - I know it- but I still haven't found it when I go home to look for it)

Read This Book by the great Doctor Van Wie
As My two good friends Cimabue and Giotto would agree this is one of the greatest books ever on European coinage. Louis XIV would be pleased with this awesome display of knowledge by the Doctor. Even Industrial people such as Thomas Sadler enjoy this book. Here are some sample reviews from many of the great figures of history.

"Two Thumbs Up!"- Mahandis Ghandi
"A Masterpiece"- Bernini
"Just like back in da trecento"- Cimabue
"My fingers hurt"- Thomas Sadler
"Le Wow!"- Mazarin
"Zis is a good book"- Otto V(o,a)n Bismarck
"Es un libro fabuloso"- Juana of Spain
"Now That's a spicy meataball- and a good book"- Fra Angelico

As you can see the reviews are pouring in, so stop right now and buy this book! You will not be sorry.

Here I come, Who Wants to be a Millionaire!
If only such a man with his minute knowledge of modern coinage as Dr. Paul D. Van Wie existed during the time of Louis XIV's reign in France, then maybe The French Revolution could have been outright avoided! This brilliant author's book on modern coinage was a delight to read and a real page turner! After having read this novel, I feel prepared to answer any question on modern coinage should it show up on the show Who Wants to be a Millionaire, which I plan to enter soon. Maybe I'll give this fine, young author a piece of my profits. You never know!

Help me St. Anne, I will become a monk and a student of Doc
Martin Luther, Leonardo D'Vinci, Napoleon Bonaparte, Karl Marx. Ha. Who needs these puny little figures in history? Instead there should stand one man, a man so great that he can never find a piece of chalk. A man who can stare Doritos in the face and laugh. A man who's name means Prussian Nobility (well not really, there's a A instead of a O, but does it matter.) A man who worked in the fields for 12 hours a day. A man whose wardrobe matches that Calvin Klein guy. This man, strong, tall, kind-of-smart: Paul van Wie. Read his book and you shall see what a master piece is. Read it a second time and see what the masterpiece of time is. Read it backwards the third time and it will reveal the secret message "Why are you reading my book for the third time? Go study for the AP test!"

Delightful!
This is a wonderful read. It makes a great bedtime story and it is also beautiful (the wood carvings) and inspiring. This is good for people tired of reading what is wrong with the environment. The Man Who Planted Trees is kind of like a sophisticated Lorax book. Anyway, buy this book and enjoy it!

How to live a detached life of love and service
"The Man Who Planted Trees" is a wonderful short story about the fictional life of a man who singlehandedly restores a valley to life by becoming the Johnny Appleseed of Trees. More importantly, its about a man who, having suffered the loss of his wwife and only child, chooses to live a simple life in anonymous service with little but his own resources and his love for trees. The short-term effect is almost unnoticeable; long-term its staggering.

The wood engravings that accompany the text stand out and mirror the book's theme of asutere simplicity quite beautifully. Its a wonderful book for children, nature enthusiasts, gardeners and those looking for hope that follwoing one's heart and living out of love, rather than fear, can ultimately make a difference.

We all plant seeds
I became acquainted with this compelling and moving story through an animation festival. Although the crowd of college students had been rowdy this film was the last shown and people all left the theater hushed. The story is not only about a man who plants trees, it is about how each of us can make a difference in the world by every small action of love. If we do not attach a need for recognition or money to our endeavors, they feed the spirit and health of the world. I have read this book over & over and seen the animated film 4 or 5 times, and I see and learn something different every time. What do you see?

Immunobiology: The Immune System in Health and Disease
Published in Hardcover by Garland Pub (August, 1994)
Authors: Charles Janeway and Paul Travers
Amazon base price: $66.00
Average review score:

Immunobiology
Janeway and his co-authors have prepared a masterful text with remarkably clear exposition of the myriad of details in this rapidly developing field. It is replete with illustrations, including cartoon-like diagrams, histological slides, and tables, each of which are used to illuminate the discussion as deemed helpful by the authors. They present an incredible amount of information, and the text, reflecting recent revision, is remarkably current. This volume is suitable as a text for a course in immunology for medical students, or as an introduction to the subject for graduate students requiring knowledge of the immune system. It is perhaps advanced for most undergraduate courses, although the text is sufficiently clear that undergraduates can comprehend the material. It is primarily a question of whether the undergraduate reader has received sufficient foundation in cell and molecular biology to possess the presumed foundational knowledge. This is no "brief" overview. It is stuffed with detail giving students a thorough foundation in this fascinating field. A real tour de force.

Accurate, clear and comprehensive immunological knowledge
Janeway's Immunobiology is probably the best immunology book that someone really interested in immunology should take to the mythical desert island. One can enjoy it by its clarity from the basic graduate courses, and then keep reading it when doing research and pursuing hypothesis on the most advanced immunological topics. Many times I have found better organized and complete information on this book (even the old editions!) than on the latest reviews on specialized journals. The intense and careful work displayed to promote the real understanding on the concepts and the relations between immune components is impressive. Even more, the success in explanation is such that the authour takes the risk to have his book neglected as "too easy" by first time readers. However, immunology researchers in contact with the often chaotic and contradictory immunological literature can really appreciate the incredible amount of critical work invested and the intellectual gift of the author (authors) to abstract complex immune phenomena into nicely designed and biologically precise "cartoons". The focus on the evolutionary and functional consequences/origins of the immune mechanisms and structures makes Janeway's book one of the most refreshing and valuable voices in a sometimes too-technically oriented discipline. An impressive accomplishment never praised enough.

This book rocks!
This is by far the most well written immunology text I have encountered. Even the most difficult concepts are presented in the most understandable manner. This book is very extensive in the material it covers and is highly recommended for an advanced undergraduate student or as an introductory graduate text. By far the feature most appealing to me are the extensive images and cartoons used in this text, used quite effectively to elucidate even the most difficult of topics. This visual presentation style combined with the extensive and highly readble coverage of relevant material make this a must have for any serious student. The book is also updated frequently I believe a new edition is on the way slated to be publsihed in April 2004.

A real eye-opener
I don't live under a rock but even still, being a gay male in the 90s, I can honestly say I don't know anyone with AIDS. Consequently, I have never had to endure the loss of losing someone I love to the disease without a cure. Yet I still found myself drawn to Paul's story about his struggle with the deterioration of his partner, Roger. After reading Becoming a Man, I progressed to this part of Paul's autobiography, expecting it to be much like the other part of the story. However, it wasn't. Not at all. The book introduced the tragedy of what occurs when good people experience horrid things. I couldn't believe Roger was actually dying throughout the book. He and Paul seemed so happy together; they had finally proven to the world that they, a gay couple, could survive in American society. Then the disease hit. What a loss, even with the AZT treatment, even with the constant barrage of doctor's appointments. I suppose this book made me aware that life, like I had heard so many times before, is not fair. If it were Roger would not have died and Paul would not have followed him seven years later.

Astounding, moving and courageous
Not only is this an incredibly moving account of a brave couple's struggle with AIDS, it is a testament to the courage needed to face society's hostility towards those suffering with the disease. Paul Monette may have written the most harrowing and moving modern book I have read. His writing speaks directly, in language stripped to the essentials by loss and grief. I found myself rereading paragraphs again and again; the last chapter would wring tears from a stone. Tragic, beautiful, a monument to love.

Too difficult to hold, too engaging to put down
Like its prequel "Becoming a Man", Paul Monette's Borrowed Time is exceptionally well-written, and together they form one of the most important autobiographies our times. Borrowed Time, the story of Paul Monette's and his partner Roger Horowitz's struggle with AIDS, is sometimes emotionally too hard to go on reading, but at the same time too engaging to put down. While reading it I literaly had those feelings. If Becoming a Man is the ultimate growing up/coming out story, then Borrowed Time is the ultimate AIDS story. Together they tell the story of gay life in our times better than any other book I read.

A Must For Your Barbecue Book Library
"Paul Kirk's Championship Barbecue Sauces" is a must-have for anyone who's serious about creating great barbecue. The book contains much of the same information that Chef Paul teaches in his Pitmaster BBQ classes all over the U.S. Lots of flavorful recipes for sauces, rubs, and marinades that are easy to make, plus tips on creating your own signature sauce or rub. Your barbecue book library is not complete without this book!

A great learning tool to enhance your Barbecue
When I purcharsed this book I didn't have great expectations for its contents. However, with the credentials that Paul Kirk has I thought it might be interesting reading. I also expected it to contain 175 recipes with little or no explanation of how or why they work, oh and of course the first three chapters would be on how to start my smoker.

I admit, I was wrong! It starts with the basics and teaches you how to build from there. If you are a mustard lover this is definately a must buy. Every ingredient listed serves a purpose and he tells you why. Paul Kirk may not give you his secret recipe, but he sets you up to make your own. Oh, only the introduction covers the cooking methods so the whole book is dedicated to Barbecue Sauces. My only problem with the book is the pages should be laminated It's already getting stained. I love BBQ and this book.

BBQ Master Class
This glorious paperback is a once-in-a-decade event in the world of cookbooks: somone who genuinely understands his subject clearly and succinctly explains it in a way that is easy for anyone to understand, even complete novices.

Several times, the author uses the term "master class". This term is usually reserved when an acknowledged master of the subject decides to transfer his skills and abilities to others via a special class. At first, I thought that the use of this term was a little overblown. How wrong I was.

He goes through these subjects: ingredients, rubs, marinades, mops, sauces, and other (salsa, relish, ketchup). Each subject is expertly covered, and tells you everything you need to know. He explains the principle and structure of each one, and then gives instructions on how to create it for yourself. Recipes are then presented for those who do not wish to do the experiments on their own. My only complaint is the table of contents: more detail would be a great help.

This book is the only one you really need when it comes to barcecue sauces. If you don't already have it, I suggest you get it and throw away the other barbecue books you have.

Bannerman's Ghosts
This book offers a nice tie-in of characters from the Bannerman books, Haven, and Whistler's Angel. Certainly a different and fun premise from other espionage books out there. However not quite up to Able, Baker, Charley or Shadowbox as far as quality. I think this book would be a difficult read for a first-time Maxim reader.

Bannerman's Ghosts
My only complaint about this book is that I had to wait too long for it to come out. Now I find out that the new book, The Bannerman's Prophecy won't be out for another eight or more months.

John R. Maxim is the world's greatest storyteller. I consider this book to be one of his best. He is an expert in weaving the background history of his characters into the new story. For the first time reader of Maxim's books they shouldn't have any difficulty to figure out who Bannerman and his "ghosts" are.

I had a difficult time putting it down once I started reading it the first time. The story made me laugh and cry all though the book. The characters seem so real, I can almost imagine what Bannerman, Carla and of course Waldo might look like. I'm not sure I would want to know if they were one of my neighbors.

I highly recommend this book for anyone's library. I have reread all of Maxim's books that I have several times.

John Maxim is Superb. And Bannerman is dynamite.
That's what the sticker says on my jacket cover, quoting Iris Johansen, who is another of my favorites. And, wow, has she nailed it with just those eight words. My only complaint with Bannerman's Ghosts is that I waited too long for it and devoured it too quickly. I can't remember when I felt so many emotions in the course of reading a single book. It had me laughing out loud and then crying real tears, sometimes within the same page. It had me horrified, scared and wanting to cheer. It made me fall in love with three different characters.

I hesitate, in fact, to refer to them as characters because they seem so utterly real and so human. It had me in awe of the research that Maxim must have done and wondering how he got his sources to talk to him. It made me wonder how Maxim knows Bannerman and his people so well. Especially Carla and Elizabeth Stride and my personal favorite, John Waldo. So, you know what I think? I think they are real. And I think that Maxim must be one of them.
