Saad's Talkaty Talker
A remarkable guy from Downtown, Known for reading his book upside down, Chose to stand on his head In his bed while he read And developed a permanet frown. A talkaty talker named Wade Took Tina to watch the parade, When he said, " Sweet miss-miss, Would you like a kiss-kiss?" She doused him with cold lemonade. A hot-air balloonist named Betty Flew over a sea of spagetti. It looked quite suspicious, But tasted delicious With Parameson cheese and confetti. There once was artist named Nallie, Who painted her cottage with jelly, And then on one shutter She spread peanut butter And slid down the stairs on her belly. A happy musican named Joe Went out play in the snow. He played up a storm To keep himself warm, While everyone shouted, "bravo!" A sleepy-time baby named Pammie Loves to sleep over with Grammie, Who bakes apple pies, And sings lullabies, And rocks her to sleep in her jammies.

Excellent - Beautifully Photographed
This is a memorable book full of huge pictures beautifully shot by photographer Paul Starosta. I like the large format and the printing qulality. Examining the caterpillar and its metamorphosis into a butterfly is one of the great photo essays in the book. There are great photos of a huge assortment of butterflies and moths in this book with good info on the species and their geographic data. The emphasis is on pictures, so if you're into the mistery and beauty of butterflies this book will not dissapoint.

There is a lot of great information in here about everything from the making of beer to choosing a good new beer to try. The writing style is also very fun, so it helps keep things entertaining. Definitely a good book for beer enthusiasts and those who want to learn more about it.

An important contribution to the Balkan history
Paul Stephenson reached several conclusions that are really revolutionary for the study of the Byzantine administration in the Balkan provinces. The increasing interest for the Balkan history (not only for the modern times) denotes the need to understand the roots of the present conflicts. Stephenson's book explains how and why the disintegration of the Byzantine administration and the emergence of the ethnic states in the Balkans were possible. His main idea is that "Byzantine authority was almost always exercised through existing local power structures". Can we consider these surviving local structures to be a cause of the future Balkan separatism, even if they were not always the expression of "national" solidarities ? We think so, because also the Ottoman administration preserved and used in its interest the power of some Albanian, Serbian and Bosniac local potentates, after their conversion to Islam and even before. Stephenson has payed a special attention to the significance of the frontier as an ideological limit between the civilized world and the barbarians. He also introduces a new concept: the internal frontiers of the territories mastered by the local authochtonous rulers by whom the Byzantine administration was exerted. The book brings valuable arguments for the new interpretation of the 11th century supported by P. Lemerle and more recently by M. Angold against Ostrogorsky's old viewpoint. Stephenson shows that the shift to 'civilian' government was not a decline, because "the Byzantine economy was growing rapidly" and that the defence policy based on warfare was replaced with a more adecquate policy based on trade and gifts for the barbarians ("traiding, not raiding"). He considers that Basil II left a poisoned legacy: a too large and expensive army, and that his 'civilian' successors tried to transform the general strategy after the hard Pecheneg inroads of 1036, when became obvious that a classical limes is not useful. Unlike many works of Byzantine political history, this book gives much attention to the rich archaeological and numismatic evidence, carefully used in order to supply the scarcity of the literary sources. Some points are disputable or even wrong, but, generally speaking, the use of archaeology led him to important conclusions I consider that the most important Stephenson's contributions concern the history of the Paradunavon province (in northern Bulgaria and Dobrudja) and the Byzantine-Hungarian relations in the 12th century. Other subjects dealt in are: the Byzantine conquest of Bulgaria, the restoration of this state after the rebellion led by the Vlach rulers Peter and Asan in the form of a Romanian-Bulgarian state, the small Slavic principalities in the Serbian lands. Albeit a high-scientific work, this book can easily be read by any people interested in the medieval history. We can be sure that this book will be considered a major contribution to the history of the South-Eastern Europe in the Middle Ages.

Look what he did in a three year period!
I contend that Paul Motwani produced more great chess literature in a three year period (1997-2000) than any chess author in history (HOT Chess, COOL Chess, STAR Chess, Chess Under the Microscope and Most Instructive Games of the Young Grandmasters). His annotations are alive with enthusiasm and insight, are a tremendous combination of variations and text; in short, they have everything that great annotations should have. But he goegoes further than this, constantly posing challenges to the reader, drwaing comparisons to other positions, and generally inspiring the reader to tacked the difficult subject of chess. These are all great books, and C.O.O.L. Chess is as good as any of them. The emphasis is on exploring creative opening lines. He shows how people have succeeded with this idea of finding your own opening niche and creating something personal for your repertoire. Finding an opening repertoire has always been a battle for me, and Motwani has inspired me to try things I never thought I would try. For instance, the French Defense. I have always hated the French, but Motwani's chapter in this book on the French ("French Connection") will have all of its readers playing the French. I cannot say enough about his books. For those three years, he put out nearly 1000 densely packed pages of high intensity chess literature. He is like the Beatles at their peak. The difference is that he has been almost universally condemned by most chess reviewers. He is too original for them. For instance, Motwani occasionally mentions God in his writings. This really rankles chess traditionalists, who contend that chess should not contain any such personal references. But if you are open minded, and enjoy striking an doriginal chess literature, of a very intense and demanding style, I suggest you gobble up all these books by this genius, Paul Motwani.

Cabinets and Built-Ins: A Practical Guide to Building Professional-Quality Cabinetry

Cabinet making made easy
This book on cabinetry was published by Rodale Books in 1994, before that company veered away from practical how-to literature toward its current interest in spirituality and alternative medicine.
It is truly an outstanding example in its field, describing step by step how to build cabinets using just two power tools: a table saw and a router. I'm an occasional cabinet maker, so I go back to it and review critical chapters whenever the time rolls around to build a new project. The text is clear and concise but not over-simplified, the illustrations are helpful. The minimally experienced home carpenter can make very nice cabinets using the information in this book alone.

Easy to read and a lot to learn
My son read this aloud to our extended family of 9 on a summer driving trip to the desert. Everyone enjoyed the book, and there were things for us all to learn. Great pictures for the younger kids, too.
