The Von Welanetz Guide to Ethnic Ingredients

Start at A, end at Z - an encyclopedia worth reading.
This book was essential to helping me know what's what in the ethnic grocery stores I haunt. It's organized as an encyclopedia, so I started at A and finished at Z. Every time I found an ingredient that intrigued me, I'd be off looking for it: fresh turmeric (wow); asafetida (aggh); cardamon (mmm); sea slugs (don't ask).

The book was a huge undertaking and I'll forgive a few errors, like the statement that American pine nuts (pinon nuts) are too small to bother with and inferior to the larger Chinese variety. Most pine nuts I see in the store are smaller than the average pinon nut. If you can find fresh pinon nuts, they are one of the best things to eat(.)

Every pioneer will come back with some inaccurate impressions. I salute the author, and regret that the book has gone out of print. Find it. Read it.

Outstanding art & narrative
For me this is a "blow me away" book. Although my first contact with Herb Kane, he feels familiar, comfortable, honest... besides being knowledgeable, creative, insightful. My feeling is that both his illustrations and his "story" about Hawaii is right.... it has been written and painted through him, you might say..... but this man is not a new-age flake.... very solid, very real.

Wagering to Win: Best Bets for Fun at the Track
Published in Paperback by Mutuel Press, Inc (March, 1995)
Author: M. Paul Andersen
Amazon base price: $19.95

The Definitive Guide To Track Wagering
This is THE best guide that I have ever come across in regards to wagering on horses and greyhounds. It is a must have book for any novice gambler, explaining every type of wager, defining track terms, and providing a guide of tracks of North America.

While the book is a must have for beginners, even most veteran gamblers would find this book quite beneficial. Mr. Andersen begins his book with the most basic of wagering information and progresses into more exotic wagers which would provide much needeed insight to all but the most seasoned gamblers.

There is an entire section devoted to wagering tables. I have found this to be quite indispensible while at the track trying to calculate how much a particular exotic bet will cost. I never go out to the track without this "tool".

The only complaint that I had with this book initially, was that I thought it was a greyhound handicapping book. It covers horses as well as greyhounds and definately is NOT a handicapping book. With that stated, I was very pleasantly surprised at all the wonderful information contained in this book and am happy to have made this particular "mistake". I would definately recommend this book to wagerers at any level.

Take this book home!
I liked the weird people who lived with Nick's aunt and have names like Rode Kool and OK Sunbeam and the place where all of them live which is called "Happiness Far" (It was a farm and the m fell off the sign.) Also how Nick and his girlfriend find a way to get into houses where nobody lives that are up for sale and hang out there. There was also interesting things that Nick wrote about his habit of walking like at one time everything in the world was in walking distance, since it had to be, since people only walked. This was fun to read but made you think, too.

Publishers Overview
Walking the Relinquished Path
We are the forgotten People, born under a veil of shame, searching for the birthright our parents abandoned.

Walking the Relinquished Path is an emotionally charged and freshly candid journey into a woman's life as she struggles with her family and herself to discover the Native American roots her grandfather turned his back on in order to survive in the white man's world.

What is a "Real Indian?" Michelle asks. So many people who have Indian blood in their veins will never know who their people are or what their heritage is. So many more don't have the necessary paperwork to gain the recognition they believe they need in order to claim their birthright.

Michelle is forced to confront centuries of shame, fear and conditioning created by her family, government polices, religious organizations and even Indian people themselves in order to answer the all important question, "Who am I?" and finally find the strength to say,"I know who I am!"

Truly inspirational, Walking the Relinquished Path dares not only to explore the questions that few venture to speak aloud, but also to find the answers buried beneath.

Practical, Informative, Could Have a Better Map
Recently a British friend and I (Yank) followed one of the book's walks on the Somme. The details in the book helped greatly. Beyond the basic description, all the snippets of poetry, diary entries, official history, and photos of soliders and then-and-now battle sites added greatly to the walk. The only thing we felt missing is that the many walks so well described in the book and well-mapped individually are not shown together in one area-wide map, which would help orient the first-time visitor.
