THe Zombies That Ate Pittsburgh: The Films of George A. Romero
Published in Paperback by Dodd Mead (June, 1987)
Author: Paul R. Gagne
Amazon base price: $14.95
Used price: $60.00
Collectible price: $103.22

Informative, entertaining and endearing portrait of Romero.
Paul R. Gagne's book on George A. Romero, charts his career from it's beginnings as a kid with a camera, to being an ad man to doing his debut "Night of the Living Dead" and through the subsequent highs (Dawn of the Dead, Creepshow and Martin)and lows (There's Always Vanilla, Jack's Wife) and everything else in between (Day of the Dead, Knightriders, The Crazies, television series' et al.) up until about 1986 or so.

After a historical background, the book is divided up into a film by film basis and each chapter covers the origins of each project, the inspirations behind them, how they were done, anecdotes from various participants and then conclude with Romero's point-of-view on the particular venture. It's a nice comprehensive format and makes for good reading.

The book also contains a chapter at the end on Savini's work and how it was achieved, a comprehensive filmography, discography and possible future direction for Romero which at the time of purchase (1988) were probably a bit more accurate. Also of note are the large amounts of photos within the text (B&W), and the very nice colour spread in the centre. A very well written and well researched biog/filmography on one of films less understood and less represented auters.

Informative bio is a joy to read.
For those who do not believe that horror icon Romero is an artist passionate about his work I submit this book as a testament that he in fact is. Although hopelessly out of date by now (it ends with a mention of Monkeyshines being his next movie) it still remains a vibrant look at the independant spirit that brings all of Romero's work life. Required reading for Romero fans (both fair weather and die hard). Highly recommended.

The complete George A. Romero story-Kudos to Paul R. Gagne
This book is the definative story of the films of George A. Romero. In fact, it's the only book that's soley dedicated to his films. Gagne recounts Romero's humble beginings at Image Ten Inc. working with John Russo, Bill Hinzman, and Russ Streiner. He concludes with Romero's production and writing credits for 'Tales from the Darkside'(The book was published in 1987). The book is very well written, researched, and contains information not published elsewhere. Gagne's writing-style is straight-forward and insightful. Obviously, Gagne is a fan and writes with great care and affinity. This is a magnificent book and is a must for all George A. Romero fans.

A unique counting book!
I loved this counting book that combines the French number names (1-10) with French culture in the form of period furnishings. It is simple enough for a child who knows no French to enjoy the book but if someone is available who can also teach the French aspects, then all the better! It is very difficult to find good books that allow multiculturalism to be a part of a math class for elementary students. I use this with my classes for prospective elementary teachers and they love it!

Excerpt from a recently published review
ForeWord magazine calls this book "delightful": "the extravagant Louis XIV is the lesson master that showcases the Getty Museum's fine collection of eighteenth century French furniture...This is a companion to the Los Angeles museum's 1997 preschool alphabet book A is for Artist, which showcased its collection of painted masterpieces. Both are excellent guides to introduce children to the beauty of art while practicing basic skills."

An excellent text - definitely recommended
This book is like a breath of fresh air - A totally new and innovative view of manufacturing. It was very different from the traditional boring and dry manufacturing texts I have been used to reading. The book takes a look not only at manufacturing processes but also other aspects like product development and business plans - parts I have not seen in any other textbook. To sum up, I would definitely recommend the book !

A remarkable guidline for manufacturing in the 21st century
This book provides an excellent overview of manufacturing in the new economy. From the perspective of an entrepreneur in today's internet driven world, all aspects from product design to rapid prototyping and computer manufacturing are discussed in detail and with strong reference to the real world. In addition, conventional manufacturing processes like basic machining and metal forming, as well as fairly new industrial directions like biotechnology are outlined with an emphasis on the strong relationship between engineering and business. The book concludes with a realistic vision for the future of manufacturing, and therefore proves to be a 'must have' in the world of engineering and entrepreneurship.

366 Days of Excellence
Published in Paperback by The Institute Press (15 August, 2000)
Author: Paul D. Bailey

Average review score:

Excellence
Paul Bailey does an excellant job of breaking down a very complex process of achieving excellence. Every person, organization and institution that has "excellence" in it's mission statement must read this book. Paul Bailey articulates thought provoking messages everyday that will bring you one day closer to what it takes to achieve excellence.

You'll be glad you spent your time...
366 Days of Excellence is an outstanding book about character and personal growth. Its author, Paul Bailey, speaks to the terrific challenges we all face in our families, jobs, and relationships. The book is founded on Five Pillars of Excellence: Character, Direction, Discipline, Relationships, and Leadership.

The heart of the book is 366 "daily reflections". Based on the Five Pillars, Bailey's reflections are simple (but not easy) lessons for examining the way in which we conduct ourselves. Each serves as a guidepost for achieving personal, team, or organizational improvement. The lessons are effective, common- sense messages; they are an improvement on other "self-help" publications in that they offer straightforward solutions to fundamental problems. They are proof that a book need not be difficult or prolonged to be very, very successful.

The book makes no promises. It only offers a recipe of sorts for what we all want: a better existence. It will challenge you to explore your behavior and define your beliefs. It will be a really good resource for managers and executives; probably a better tool for Mom and Dad.

The icon of American rock music
Answers many of the questions inquiring minds want to know. I bought it for my 9-year old son, a budding electric guitar player, who was forever asking me questions about Fender. He had found the site on the Internet and was learning the sounds of each of these distinctive guitars from the audio bytes they generously served up. The book is handsomely illustrated and includes all the famous Fenders with short bios on this who played them. But the star of this book is the guitar which has become an icon of American rock music. We have even made some cardboard models of those he likes most. A must have for Fender fans of all ages.

The only unbiased book that tells the whole story
Mr.Smith was able to write a story of the evolution of Fender Musical Intruments that was crafted in much the same way as Leo Fender's "no nonesense" technical philosophy. It seems that everyone who worked for the company is writing, or has written a book that often is either romanticized or modified to fit a personal agenda. The unbiased approach is both shocking and refreshing. Mr.Smith's book also has hundreds of rare and unseen inside photos of the factory, people, and instruments that alone are worth the price of the book. If anyone is interested in the history of this company, "Fender Sound Heard "Round the World" is the only book you will need. Be warned, the book is as addictive to read and browse as playing a blues lick on your Stratocaster!

Detailed and to the point, great pictures
This book may not rival other books by the same author, but it does indeed provide a nice, compact story of how the Gibson Les Paul came to be, how the deal for it was set and its evolution. Deep research, presented in a very down to earth language, help the Les Paul enthusiast learn about the instrument and its different incarnations. Although the book could've used more pictures (or at least, different, detailed shots of the ones included) all the pics are in great color, and most of the models are shown here. In all, a great book about one of the finest musical instruments of the century.

The succinct history of a classic model of electronic guitar
50 Years Of The Gibson Les Paul by music author and guitar expert Tony Bacon is a superbly presented and succinct history of a classic model of electronic guitar invented by the legendary Les Paul and which was originally launched in 1952, going on to be favored by grand musicians throughout the last half century. Photographs enhance and illustrate this landmark presentation of the Gibson Les Paul's creation, and its prevalence in every decade to the modern day. A detailed, informative, highly readable and welcome presentation, 50 Years Of The Gibson Les Paul is especially recommended for the legions of Les Paul fans and electric guitar enthusiasts.

Pete Seeger's Abiyoyo returns for a surprising story
Pete Seeger's famous song "Abiyoyo" is a family favorite of ours, so I was intrigued to happen upon his "Abiyoyo Returns." For anyone unfamiliar with the story, Abiyoyo is a fearsome giant who eats people when he's hungry and is generally destructive and scary.

In this tale, warmly illustrated by Michael Hays, Abiyoyo is summoned up to help move a boulder so that the local townsfolk can build a dam. But the magic wand used to call Abiyoyo up breaks, and there is no way to get Abiyoyo to disappear again. There is a Pandora's Box element to the tale, and the wisdom of elders is deftly interwoven with bright ideas contributed by the children in the village.

Kids will get a special kick out of the idea that the young heroine--who looks to be maybe eight or ten years old--comes up with the idea that will allow the townspeople to peacefully co-exist with Abiyoyo, while still getting their dam built and the boulder removed.

A Childhood Favorite Continues..
Continue your favorite childhood book with your children. My children love Abiyoyo Returns. A wonderful story about differences, acceptance and love. It will be a favorite in your family's library. Great holiday gift.
