Take charge of your life.
Caught in the maelstrom of life? Looking for a way to make sense of the chaos enmeshing you? Critical Thinking: Tools for Taking Charge of Your Professional and Personal Life provides a method for unraveling the complexities of life and reweaving them into an integrated tapestry which gives meaning and purpose to the life of the individual and his/her relation to others.

This book is a natural correlative of a previous book by Paul: Critical Thinking: What Every Person Needs to Survive in a Rapidly Changing World. However, the current book is not about 'survival' but about 'taking charge'. It deals with the fundamentals of critical thinking and their necessity and applicability in making the decisions which give direction to one's life. It's a book of questions, not answers,-- questions about one's thinking which as Paul and Elder state in a graphic, pg. 45, "your thinking controls your emmotions and your decisions". This book not only presents a mirror in which to see oneself through questions, but also presents the challenge to look honestly into the mirror with a view to improving the image.

Critical Thinking: Tools for Taking Charge of Your Professional and Personal Life is written in a readily understandable and easily readable style. This a book for Everyman. It is a book to be not only read, but lived.

The classic collection of literary theory
In this day and age of splintered and broken schools of literary theory, where nobody seems to agree what is the right way to go about reading and discussin literature, W.J. Bate's "Criticism: the Major Texts" is a wistful reminder of the days when critics were far more certain. For several decades after its publication, this collection was the classroom standard for the subject; it still serves as the best collection for any study of the history of literary theory. The introductions are brief but exacting; the texts are chosen with judicious editing; the lessons learned are not easily forgotten. In short, a wonderful read for anyone with a literary bent.

Wonderful !!!
What a wonderful book!! Ricoeur talks about his life, his journey through philosophy, his thoughts, feelings and much more. He talks about his encounters with some of our centuries great philosophers, such as Heidegger, Jaspers, Marcel and Gadamer. From his childhood to his experience as a prisioner during W.W.II; talks about his teaching years in both Europe and USA (he makes an excelent analysis of the two cultures). A must read for anyone interested in philosophy, ethics, history, phenomenology, psychanalysis, religion, art, education, politics, european and american culture. A great introduction to his work and life. Very pleasant book. I highly recomend it!!

A fine edition
The placement of the First Introduction at the beginning of the book is very useful, providing a different feel as to the nature of the work as a whole. The relative of lack of [bracketed] comments compared to the Pluhar edition is also a plus.

Worship the Creator, not creation
I enjoyed this book because it combines science and religion. Too many environmental science books are secular and miss the point of taking care of the planet--we are God's stewards to manage his "property." This would make a nice supplemntary text in a religious college where God has not been kicked out. It wouldn't fly in a state school, but it gives a believing instructor some "flavoring" which could be worked into current environmental issues. Science needs to be taught objectively--given that God is above objectivity as the first and still sustaining cause.

Respectful, insightful, on the money, Mr. Best...
I recently in Germany touring the American School Doin'Dunbar as 'Lias'Mother...I finished reading this book and wrote this poem...kudos to Best!!! On the importance of Dunbar to America's past and present...

IF NOT HE...THEN WHO?

From Jehovah's well of talent Dunbar drew poetic pictures of old times made new voices he gave to a people no one heard silent words hometales of slavery some happy all blue

Over his grave they made remarks saying his words were not so smart others cursed the rhymes he knew common verses rang so true love professed in witty ways his labor beyond them grew if not he to share a page of ourstory I ask myself then who? Other revealed their peoples ways city life & country days what mattered most is the little he knew feeling hearts and souls of our people stories, folktales, poetry, plays, songs in his birds eye view

Hidden from the world he grew fed on his parents voice slavery's addendum racist realities...he had no choice Born free to read and write in public view what else could he do? wrote in prose drew a rose if not he to stand above the few then who? Harris, English, Lanier, Chestnutt, Davis & Hay wrote plantation stories in their day make beleive stories in broken words Dunbar in English, Irish & German were heard he set his pen to move with God a blessing his lyrics set me free so to critics who live to critize tell me who could do it but he?

Lost in the Z's?
For readers tired of the first-person lyric so popular in our day, read Paul Zimmer, who must share this ennui. Through his career, Zimmer has been one of our finest Persona poets and one of our best Character poets, in the tradition of Edwin Arlington Robinson. Here, collected for the first time, are his wonderful Zimmer poems, his many poems celebrating eccentric characters, and his fine traditional nature lyrics (which don't neglect the dark side of nature as well). Richly humorous in some poems, moving in others (a fine writer of love poetry), you'll laugh richly and feel deeply with this end-of-the-alphabet poet, among our finest.

Wisdom from a master
Stafford was a great poet; he also writes about writing like a great teacher. I heartily endorse this book to anyone who has read "Writing the Austrialian Crawl." If you haven't read that book, read it first, and then read this one. This book is a posthumous collection of magazine articles, interviews, and other scattered writings. While it is delight to me, and anyone else who loved Stafford, it is not as effective at demonstrating Stafford's approach to writing. That said, Stafford's generosity and humanity shine in this collection. It is worth reading, even if you are not a writer.

HANG ON TIGHTLY...
Jack the croupier lives by one rule: "Hang on tightly, let go lightly..." However, no matter how zen-trained a reader is, it's not easy to let go lightly of this book which contains draft No.9 of Paul Mayersberg's screenplay and is dedicated to the memory of Jean-Pierre Melville. It is a very insightful companion to Mike Hodges' once obscure now cult-movie, and a must-read for its numerous fans, since it offers more than the mere "transcript" of a final cut. A very interesting chapter -- titled "Annotations, Memories and Notes for the Curious" -- confirms why CROUPIER is the thinking person's film noir par excellence. As a bonus, the book is illustrated with B&W photos from the film featuring Clive Owen, Alex Kingston, Kate Hardie and Gina McKee. Food for thought meets eye candy... leaving nothing to chance. Hang on tightly.
