Despite its relative age, the quality of this book means that much of its content still holds good. The format of individual authorities writing chapters on their own specialism nicely combines the best of expertise with variety. Subjects range from analytical techniques (developing inferences,tape recorded conversations, telephone records, and particularly unique chapters on Network Analysis), to practical workplace issues like data collection and analysis, report writing, and the Intelligence Function in general. Each of the authors is well recognised and respected within the field, and the content of the book is still not repeated elsewhere in quite the same way. A good introduction to many aspects of the field and the profession, with other good references and links built-in.

Few twentieth-century writers on architecture and design have enjoyed the renown of Reyner Banham. Born and trained in England and a U.S. resident starting in 1976, Banham wrote incisively about American and European buildings and culture. Sartre wrote volume one of Critique of Dialectical Reason (CDR) between 1957 & 1960, & it was published in France in 1960. The first English edition appeared in 1976. A second, unfinished volume appeared posthumously in 1982.

CDR was a massive attempt to describe the minutiae of human interaction & Sartre's last major philosophical work. Its thesis statement can be drawn from its thematic antecedent, Search for Method: cultural order is irreducible to natural order.

Rhetoric professor Michael McGee (1989) said that CDR was lost in the avant garde reconstruction of Foucault, Lacan, & Gilles DeLeuze. In CDR, life was an endless occasion of totalizations, detotalizations, & retotalizatons on a field of scarcity. We called the temporalization of events "history."

On the other hand, structuralists & their scholarly progeny forever looked for an objective entity called "context" with which to examine their subjects. Sartre insisted that even "context" was reducible to further concerted human effort, which he called "praxis."

Because of the scant attention that CDR has got from professional scholars (except for McGee), it holds a truly grand secret, which is that it was more or less the weapon with which orthodox psychiatric medicine was challenged in the 1960s by R.D. Laing et al. Laing synopsized CDR in 1964's Reason & Violence; terms & elements in CDR fairly drip from Sanity, Madness & Family & The Politics of Experience.

Rebel French psychiatrist Frantz Fanon (1961) used Sartre's quite original ideas of the pledged group & the terror of the brotherhood to show how violent revolution by oppressed peoples would produce a cultural catharsis & a healthy nationalism.

I know of no other original study, treatise, or even novel that uses the themes & concepts of CDR. A CDR-oriented examination of, say, American domestic relations proceedings might be a worthy endeavor.

Crossing the Threshold of Hope is a beautiful statement of fearless hope that is edifying not only for Roman Catholics but for all Christians as well as the rest of mankind at the beginning of this new Millennium.

As a non-Roman Catholic, I was surprised to have this Pope speak to my walk as a Christian in this book. He goes even further in addressing each reader, regardless of creed, as fellow human beings.

This book is written in an engaging question and answer format. John Paul II shows himself to be a man of great intelligence with a great care for all of humanity.

Reading this book would be beneficial for everyone. I recommend it.

It is a pity that this work, like the previous two installments of the Starbridge Chronicles (Soldiers of Paradise and Sugar Rain), is now out of print, because it is certainly one of the most interesting fantasy experiments to be published in the past several years. Set in the distant future, in a time where environmental degradation has caused seasons to last for years, a phenomenon which has caused the fabric of society to disintigrate, the story synchronizes elements of mysticism, magic and prophecy. At the same time, the trilogy offers startling psychological insight into such areas as mass hysteria, human sexuality, addiction, and religious longings. Park in the Starbridge Chronicles has created a vivid, horrific world that, for all of its Boschian strangeness, convincingly portrays the landscape of the unbridled unconscious. I highly recommend these works to anyone, but in particular to readers of Gene Wolfe, Jack Vance, Frank Herbert, and Fritz Leiber.

An excellent, concise review of many outpatient diagnoses encountered by the medical professional during rotations. A must for residents, PA's or nurse practitioners.

Barbara Schulte's point-by-point guide to cutting and competing devotes about half of its content to the mental aspect of the sport. Barbara covers topics such as the importance of goal setting, mental strategies, and the power of positive thinking. In the remaining half, she deals with selecting the right horse, making sure the rider has the basic riding skills down, practicing effectively, and learning how to work the herd. The material is presented in "executive summary" fashion with the outset of each chapter telling the reader what that chapter will say. Within each chapter, Barbara and co-author Julie Wells present information using a lot of numbered lists and headings. No reader should fail to understand the book's important points. At times, however, the elegantly simple presentation may not convey enough detail to be useful. For example, when telling the reader "how to get" a horse to have head/neck flexibility, the book assumes the reader knows what to feel for "when the horse gives his nose in response to your request." (People may incorrectly think a horse "gives" when his nose points in the direction of the direct rein pull but the horse is still bracing on the rein, not softening.)

When Barbara presents information on reading cattle and working the herd, she excels. The reader will appreciate how she breaks down each step of a cut and correlates those steps with what the rider should be doing to effectively ride his or her horse. She could have written the whole book on those topics, and the reader would still want more.

The book's quirky format may annoy some readers. (On the even numbered pages are inspirational quotes from cutters or photos/illustrations; the odd numbered pages contain the text.) But the presentation does make for easy reading. Whether the reader is interested in acquiring performance coaching/positive thinking skills, learning how to cut cattle, or both, Barbara shares enough gems to make this a worthwhile read.

I am from Cyprus, and I found this book very intresting. The author does a good job talking about the culture of the island and gives the basics for anyone that wants to pay a visit to this beautiful island. It is not in great detail but for a pocket book and for its prize has a great deal of information.
