great read, riveting
Even though I was not in the Vietnam War, I could not put this book down. Talking to others that were in the War, I found that this story was true for those who fought. Thanks to Paul Young I learned what it was like to be a marine fighting in the jungle.

MAKE TIME TO READ THIS BOOK !
If you start reading this book late in the day...beware! You will be trying to finish it in the wee hours of the morning. It is that good! You won't be able to put it down until you get to the exciting conclusion. Don't say you weren't warned !

This you gotta see in 2003 !
Funny! Sexy! Thrilling! And full of suspense! The players in this story are so real you can reach out and touch them. What a wonderful storyteller!

HURRAY FOR THE DETROIT TIGERS !
The story deals with some of the characters who are on the Detroit Tiger's baseball team. During the mysteries, as the story unfolds, the players win the Pennant and later, the World Series! This is not a baseball story, but the sub-plot is fun to see as the Tiger team finally wins their due reward. It's a romance/mystery/thriller with a touch of sport. This you've got to read.

A Nation Under Siege
Many Americans have probably never heard of East Timor, and most of us--including those who are active followers of world affairs--would probably have some difficulty pinpointing it on a map. Arnold Kohen does a remarkable job of introducing this unfamiliar land. It's very hard not to feel sympathy and a healthy dose of admiration for the inhabitants of this long embattled nation. The book simultaneously serves as a hagiography of East Timor's heroic favorite son, and Bishop Belo's extraordinary life greatly enhances the work's inspirational level.

Among East Timor's striking characteristics is the fact that it may be the strongest seat of Catholicism on Earth today. Over 85% Catholic (less than half was in the 1960's) its rate of practicing members puts most other countries to shame. The cathedral's 6 a.m. weekday Mass regularly has an overflow crowd of 1000+. John Cardinal O'Connor once told Bishop Belo how envious he was at East Timor's teeming seminarians. Even its Indonesian occupiers concede the Church's massive influence. Although they disdain Bishop Belo for his tireless devotion to human rights, they often unhappily allow him to mediate disputes with Timorese resistance fighters.

The East Timorese greatly need this faith because the world has turned a blind eye toward the genocide inflicted upon them. Those of us in America who seethed under the reign of Bill Clinton probably never realized how culpable he was for tacitly approving these crimes against humanity. The author on numerous occasions sites examples where the United States after decades of inexplicable silence at Indonesia predation became a veritable proponent when Clinton--abandoning his campaign rhetoric about the suffering East Timorese--wanted expanded trade with the highly populated interloper. Bishop Belo is probably the only person in history to be awarded a Nobel peace Prize without a word of praise or congratulations from the Unites States Government because it was bestowed at a very inconvenient time for pending trade deals.

The island nation faces an uncertain future, and all Catholics and others concerned with human rights should monitor the situation closely. Despite the unending brutal assaults bravely endured by the East Timorese citizens, their bold faith is a good omen that eventually their struggle will be victorious.

Chilling, clear, direct... unfortunately it's all true
Many books have already been written about the tragic events of East Timor between 1998 and today, namely since when the regime of president Suharto of Indonesia collapsed, and the territory started on its slow, exciting, yet very painful path towards independence. Some books are more academic, others more journalistic and speculative. This book by Arnold Kohen, a long-time East Timor expert, makes it clear that the author is no academic or journalist in search of quick success. He is someone who has followed East Timor for a while, and has also been active and become known as a prominent East Timor lobbyist. He has now been able to recollect in this book some excellent material, excellently edited, about Monsignor Belo's role in the struggle for independence. The book is written in a vivid style, it is chilling, it is direct, yet (despite the rather eye-catching and shocking title) without leaving the place to any sensationalism... All the book says is, very unfortunately, totally true. Whether Bishop Belo's struggles could be defined as "epic" is another matter. Meanwhile, this book makes a strong and meaningful contribution to knowledge on the recent events, and also makes excellent, educative and even pleasant, if shocking, reading.

A moving biography of a great man...and a stunning indictmen
Now that Archbishop Belo has been driven into exile, and his beloved Timor transformed into an abbatoir, this superb book is more important than ever. I will not praise Belo, save to say that I hope that he is eventually canonized. I will just say one thing. This book reveals such a consistent record of perfidy, stupidity, and cupidity on the part of the United States government as to make even the most patriotic man or woman ashamed of being an American. As readers of some of my other reviews will know, I am fairly Conservative Republican. Reading of Fords, Reagans , and Bushes short-sightedness and incompetence in the matter of Timor saddened and enraged me.The only ( slight)point in their favor is that the Democratic Presidents, Carter, and Clinton, were just as bad; Carter through simple incompetence, and Clinton through cowardice and greed. Let it be asaid and said plainly: The Clinton campaign became so dependent on the Riady families money that they turned blind eye to the atroicities occuring in Timor. With the laudable exception of a few republican members of congress such as Malcolm Wallop and Frank Wolf, practically no American public figure-Republican, democrat, or independent- has spoke out on the horrors occuring in Timor. Now, when it may well be too late, the world has begun to wake up.It is time for all men and women of good will, of all political and religous faiths, to cry out "Enough". We cannot be so dependent on the raw materials and sweat shop produced sneakers and toys emanating from Indonesia that we would let theese horrors continue. I am going to phone and write every member of congress I know, asking them that they vote to discontinue ALL foriegn aid to Indonesia. I will also openly ask ALL presidential candidates- Republican, Democratic, and independent,if they will continue to support our bankrupt policy toward this outlaw state, Indonesia. I hope EVERY responsible American does the same.I beg my fellow Americans;have the courage to read this book, and the sensitivity to be outraged by what it contains.

Very excellent book
This book is very excellent and easy to understand, giving me a logical structure about projects, based on acronyms like GO CARTS, CRACS, DRIVER, and very clear examples about concepts. I think this little book values more than its cost. I take advantage with this book for for my current task. After read this book, I understand better, and have some essential habilities for Project management, Team work and a better sense on Getting job & things done! Go and get it. You will be enjoy and appreciate it.

Good book for new PMs
Excellent for new project managers. Good information on fact finding and planning projects. The primary focus of the book, however, is on people skills. The author offers many good suggestions on gaining the cooperation of participants and influencing their managers. Well written and very easy to read.

People-Project Management
This book is not so much about the tools, charts and diagrams, used in project management as it is about working with people. In many places, the author presents concrete methods that can be used to manage a project team of individuals who all work for different people.

The final chapter is a valuable psychology lesson in handling and reducing the likelihood of a project being cancelled or shelved, something that every project manager experiences at one time or another.

This text is a must-read for every project manager who wants to perfect the way that he or she deals with the people that approve the project or carry out the tasks needed to complete the project.

Finally!! An ANSWER to parents' questions.
As a family therapist, I readily and heartily recommend this book to my clients.

It is an excellent resource for parents and ANYONE who wishes to improve communication skills. Its enjoyable, lighthearted style makes it easy to read; even teens may want to read this book (as long as their parents aren't looking).

It is the little things that count!
This is a quick, powerful read, that can make big differences in how you communicate. In Dr. Schenk's book he discusses little language changes that can facilitate big conversational changes. This book can help you with managing subordinates, parenting children, and building great relationships. I already knew about most of the concepts in the book, AND it was still a great review. (You will have to read the book to see why I capitalized the word AND).

If Only I Had Had This Book When My Kids Were Young!
I wish that I had had "Great Ways To Sabotage a Good Conversation" when my kids were young! Dr. Schenk's advice would have made life easier for all. Also, I have found this book helpful in talking with the preschoolers whom I teach.
In addition, it is never to late to change your interactions with your children and your spouse. Then, you can hope that your children will learn Dr. Schenk's lessons and use them with their future spouses and children.
All new parents need to read this book. When you buy that "new baby" card, give a great gift: "Great Ways to Sabotage a Good Conversation." This is the only book that a new mother will have time to read! By the time the baby is speaking, the new parents may have been reprogrammed! An easier time will be had by all!!

Sweet guinea pig story!
I totally agree with that one review, it doesn't matter how old you are if you love guinea pigs, or just pets in general you must read this book! I wanted the book for Christmas, I love guinea pigs and I'm 26 years old. The cover is too precious! I just had to have it! This story introduces to people to what wonderful pets guinea pigs really are. This is a wonderful story about friends who have a passion for guinea pigs. I highly reccomend this story for any age. Kristy-guinea pig owner for almost 20 years!

Animal ark pets books
Animal ark books are amazingly brilliant. Although I've only read one I'm eager to read more. When I bought this book my mum thought I was too old for it, she said it was for younger children but I think not matter how old or young you may be if you love animals you'll love animal ark books!

Excellent Book
As a parent of an Autistic child, I purchased this book when my son was first diagnosed. It has a wealth of information and helped me better understand the few treatments available and the state of research on the disorder. It is a technical book, and not for all parents, but it is dog-eared in many sections from my use. I hope there is an update in the near future.

A definitive reference book
Neither cheap nor a light read, but just what it says - a definitive summary of the state-of-the-art in knowledge about autism and the other pervasive developmental disorders. Everything you need to know is in here.

Aimed at Professionals; Great for Parents, Too
Second book I read when trying to figure out whether my son had autism/PDD. Not for the parent who is faint of heart, but excellent, balanced, and objective resource for the parent who wants a deeper understanding of the research literature. Depending on your educational background, some chapters may be incomprehensible (e.g., the chapter on neurochemicals), but almost all are accessible to the well-educated and attentive layperson.

The most amazing book i've ever read
Since JRR Tolkien's The Lord Of The Rings, I don't think I've come across another work that has so enraptured me. It is truly a modern fairy tale, and one that can easily be re-read a hundred times over. (It's been awhile since I read this and I don't have my book with me, but I'll try to be as accurate as I can with the names of the characters.) You can tell from the start that this isn't your conventional fantasy romp: the heroine Marian Leatherby isn't a youthful, beautiful princess but an old lady with family problems. She doesn't journey to distant lands to find magic and adventure; instead, all the action takes place in an old folks home. Along the way Leonora Carrington slyly pokes fun at patriarchal myths and traditions. 'Galahad', a name familiar to us from Arthurian legends, reappears in THT not as some dashing, valiant do-gooder but, if my memory serves me correctly, as Marian's ineffectual, unpleasant son. So much for modern chivalry, Carrington seems to say. Yet while she debunks these old legends, she creates new ones, drawing upon mythology and fantasy alike to people her story with strong female characters and ancient Goddesses. Whimsical, magical, entertaining, thought-provoking. I won't say much more, you'll have to read it for yourself to find out just how excellent it is. And yes, do put your own copy under lock and key!!

like a wild fairy tale
Leonora Carrington is awsome as an author - she doesn't let her imagination be chained by convention or by anything. What a vivid, strange world these characters live in. Marian (the main character) is awsome herself; full of character and spirit. Everyone I've lent this book to has enjoyed it. If it has a fault, it's that it ends too soon.

Old Ladies, the Apocalypse(?), and Death by Chocolate!!!
The Hearing Trumpet is deliciously funny and irreverent; Surrealist painter/author Leonora Carrington's apocalyptic tale is filled with gems such as "Darling, don't be philosophical, it doesn't suit you, it makes your nose red." Filtered through the eyes and ears of Marian Leatherby, a 92 year-old inmate of a Spanish old folk's home (run by the cultlike Well of Light Brotherhood), the tongue-in-cheek tone and hilarious chracters make this book a refreshing surprise. Every copy I've ever owned has been stolen! From the first paragraph, the reader will see that Marian Leatherby and her friends are NOT LOL's (Little Old Ladies), and Leonora Carrington is not your average author. (She's truly hilarious, for one!) Read this book for its wacky imagery (a trompe l'oeil "furnished" tower, a pair of murdering religious quacks, termite engineering, wigs, marijuana-stuffed needlepoint pillows, and a 92 year-old lady swarming down ten stories of rope, for starters), then hide your copy from your well-read friends...or buy them their own!

Excellent choice
This is an exceptional book. Biblical, practical, lots of examples and useful tools. This book is excellent, not only for raising children who have anger problems, but great for raising any child.

Advice I could really follow
The subtitle says "Practical" and the advice really is! Not pie-in-the sky psychobabble, but direct, concrete, specific steps toward figuring out what lies behind the anger and knowing how to address it. I especially appreciate how the book doesn't waste time trying to place blame or point fingers. It just helps the parent get to work addressing the attitudes and behaviors that need correction.

Get This Book!
I have three little boys and I was concerned about some of their behaviors. Fighting, yelling, getting really mad at each other. This book answered so many questions for me it was great. He backs up everything he says with Bible verse and there are examples to help also. A lot of books hint at what could be the root of the problem but this guy lays it out in a way that is easy to understand and I have seen great improvement in my boys just in the first few days. It isn't just a book for children it is for anyone that needs to deal with an anger problem. I have felt a lot better after reading it. It heled me to see what actions I was taking that were upsetting the kids and giving them a bad example. It isn't a book that makes you feel you are a bad person. It just points out things that everybody does to some degree and just taking time to notice which things apply to you is a great help. I think everybody should get at least two of this book because it is the kind of book you want to give to a friend. If everybody read this book the world would be a better place to live in.

Best of the best
I wish I saw this novel on more Top 10 lists, but oh well. Nevertheless, I demand that you buy this book right now, and with the hefty discount Amazon is providing, you can't afford to pass this up! With a cover price of 30 beans, I can understand why some would balk initially at purchasing this, but now you have no excuse! Thirty percent off is the deal of the century for this book, and I paid full cover at my local shop! If you are a fan of modern fiction, fine graphical art, or just insane ideas, you owe it to yourself to pick this up at Amazon's great discount.

Set in the near future, the main question in Heavy Liquid is "what is Heavy Liquid?" I'm not going to tell you, but I will tell you that the characters in this story are all affected by this strange substance, part highly addictive drug, part... I don't want to spoil it, but suffice it to say that Pope's concepts are always first rate. As someone else mentioned, fans of PK Dick should take note of this work and read it.

The art is Paul's signature style, completely unmistakably his and no one else's. The lines themselves form beautiful abstract art, in addition to the concrete images they suggest, but his execution is so fluid that nothing is stale or static; these pages rip with dynamics.

All in all, among the very best graphic novels of all time, and considering that it is the work of one man, it qualifies as genius.

One of the best graphic novels I've ever read
Heavy Liquid takes place in a not so distant future, and the plot circles around a man only known as "S".He''s mission is to deliver a pack of the ultimate high: Heavy Liquid to a mysterious collector. Heavy Liquid has everything a good comic should have and some more, read it.

Awesome book!
Man, what a cool book. You got the futuristic sci-fi vibe perfectly mixed with this gritty, urban scene harboring an almost retro, beautifully illustrated chase story. Really cool stuff.
If you like old 60's flicks like Velvet Hustler, movies featuring the hip psuedo-anti-hero who's just tryin' to do his thing and not get caught/killed in the process, check this one out.
