The authors are sincere, but misinformed.
This book has some interesting points about practices in modernmedicine-advanced life support, organ transplants, care for theelderly-but to equate these practices with brutal pagan practices a la the New Age Movement is unrealistic and a disservice to health care providers. Organ transplantation is not "cannibalism". I'm sure the authors are sincere, but I wish they were better informed. At least, some interesting medical cases are discussed. END

Leaves the reader unsatisfied
Bates shares his son's basketball season through first hand insight. The team reaches the state tourney with great play by play coverage. He gives us insight into the players and community. However, Bates looses his focus in the waining seconds of the last game. Maybe he should have watched a tape to refresh his memory of what exactly happened. It's like he wrote the book during the game. I would have liked to know details...not just the result.

Not his best
This is a long way from Paul Theroux's best. You can see he already had the sharp, iconoclastic world view that makes so much of his later and better writing so good. But this is a nasty and unpleasant book, and doesn't do anything to reward you for getting through it. The characters are pretty much uniformly unsympathetic, bad stuff happens to a lot of people who may or may not deserve it. Waldo himself is terribly hard to identify with...not worth hunting for.

The Way of Christ

A weak effort with a narrow-minded flavor
"The Way of Christ," by Pope John Paul II, is a brief book in which the author contemplates the Christian path in the modern world. Unfortunately, most of the book is very bland and generalized; it reads like it could have been written by some anonymous bureaucrat working in an obscure Vatican office. The essential subject matter covered in this book has been covered before and in more depth by many other authors.

The book is further marred by a number of questionable declarations. The author decries "the massive presence in society of atheistic, agnostic, and even anti-Christian conceptions," but fails to give any concrete examples. And for that matter, I believe that many atheists and agnostics are very moral and tolerant people who should not be demonized in this way.

Unfortunately, that flavor of narrow-mindedness and intolerance surfaces in other parts of the book. The author asserts that "Only Jesus has kind and consoling words" and that there "is no solution for skepticism and despair except in faith in Christ." I imagine many of my Jewish, Hindu, and Buddhist sisters and brothers, many of whom respect and appreciate the ministry of Jesus, would disagree with such restrictive statements. The author of this book needs to read more interfaith literature.

The author also naively asserts that "Christianity is the religion of universal peace," and that all Christians become sisters and brothers. What then, I wonder, has been happening in Northern Ireland, where competing Christian groups have been slaughtering each other for centuries? I see it like this: Christianity is like any other religious or philosophical system; its precepts can be (and have been) used both to uplift and heal, or to justify the most horrific atrocities.

I have great respect for the great Christian prophets of the modern era: Thomas Merton, Martin Luther King Jr., John McNeill, and others. Unfortunately, this shallow little book pales in comparison to the work of such truly insightful Christian thinkers.

Well.. Almost Useless
This book was a big disappointment. It does gloss over alot of the key VPN ideas, but there is not much substance. I've learned more from reading various tidbits off the internet.

Also, before you even consider using PPTP you should read the CounterPane cryptanalysis paper on PPTP.

http://www.counterpane.com/pptpv2-paper.html PPTP on windows NT is just not secure!

For a total newbie, this book might give them an idea of what to look for on the internet, but besides that I don't see too much value in this book.

I wouldn't buy it again, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone that I liked.

A solid solutions-based book
Wow. Someone is unhappy that O'Reilly publishes NT books. Though most of the solutions covered in the book did not apply to my company, it definitely presented the options in a clear, concise manner. We are investigating using a VPN for our NT/UNIX network, and the chapters on PPTP and the PIX were excellent. The overview chapters were helpful, though there could be more on software solutions other than the few presented.

Perfect
This book solved a lot of problems for me. While much of the product coverage no longer applies, the theory and practice of the VPN, as well as the basic need for such a technology gave me the information I needed to convince my upper management to use VPN's better.

What a giant piece of refuse
This individual must have paid a literate to write the book for him. I've read bathroom walls with better writing than this.

Tree killer !
Worst book I have ever seen. No wonder it's out of print. Must have grown up in Ann Arbor to have such a pitiful excuse of what one calls a book. Never have I seen such a waste of paper in all my life.

Really Funny
This a funny book of why everyone should hate Ohio State. It is true that some of the things are un true, but you can only really appreciate this book if you are into Big Ten football. I am a fan of the University of Michigan football. To really like this book you must be into Big Ten Football and already hate Ohio State.

Thomas Aquinas in 90 Minutes (Philosophers in 90 Minutes)

I decided to write this review...
... in order to stand and be counted but I must say that the other reviewers pretty much said it all. There is little analysis of the thought of Aquinas in this book. What's worse is that the book isn't a well reasoned critique on Aquinas' thought but rather a short burst of ranting and ravings, often resorting to cheap personal attacks.
I'm sure we're all just a little bit dumber after reading this book.

Of very little value
I agree with all the previous reviews. I had just finished G.K. Chesterton's book on Aquinas. Chesterton is a marvelous writer, but being a devout Catholic, he assumed the reader would know Aquinas' philosophy. I picked up this book to learn more. I didn't. Strathern constantly sacrificed his point for the sake of cruel witticisms. Other than a bit of history about Aquinas' life, I came away with the impression that Strathern: (a) considers Catholics beneath contempt: (b) believes the people of Medieval times have nothing to say to us (c) is so embittered toward Christianity that he can scarcely bear to credit it with any good. More than anything, this book irritated me because it never gives the basic points of Aquinas' philosophy. Even when granting Aquinas' intellect reluctant praise, Strathern doesn't elaborate on why Thomas was brilliant. I agree with the other reviewer who wondered if Strathern had even read Thomas Aquinas. If all the books in the series are this bad, I won't waste my time.

A different take
I disagree with the previous five raters for this item.

First of all, look at the goal of the book. It is meant to be a brief introduction, not a comprehensive survey. No one will be an Aquinas scholar after reading the book, but no one should expect to. It's a reasonable introduction to his life and times and I learned a few things from it. It's a good perspective.

Second of all, the author may not have much good to say about Catholicism, but very few authors and academicians these days have much good to say about any Western religion.

Third, his writing style is a bit snide at times, but the alternative is a dry style that few people will read.

My major criticism is that the book is a bit short on his actual philosophy and a bit too long on the times he lived in. I do think his Timeline on Philosophy and the life of Aquinas was very useful, and his brief description of the philosopher's last days was downright charming.

Perhaps a better brief source on Aquinas would be the section in Will and Ariel Durant's series on the Story of Civilization.

By way of background, I have an M.A. in Philosophy and a doctorate in antother field.

Don't buy it
This book stinks. It has poor and outdated information. It's like an outdated cliff notes for Grey's. There are many better books out there, save your money!

Keep looking, because your Grey depends on you !
This book was originally published in 1979, and contains much outdated material, particularily in the area of diet. This book could have had focused more on ilnesses of the African Grey parrot. It is outdated, but it contains extensive information on Grey basics. You would be well advised to purchase a more up-to-date book and I would suggest "African Gray Parrots" by Annette Wolter, because your Grey depends on you !

This book was a great help with raising my African Grey
This book may be outdated, but it contains extensive information. It was quite helpful with teaching my Grey the basics. The book could have had focused more on ilnesses of the species. Overall I enjoyed this book and would recomend it to a new African Grey owner.

Not helpful at all
I received this book as a free offer from McGraw-Hill a few years ago when I was new to networking. I learned very little from it. I am so glad I only paid for the shipping and handling. If you are new to the field and need a good study guide, don't buy this one!

A rip off
This book doesn't even deserve 1 star at all. What a waste of money and paper. The authors have no clue on what it is meant by "Study Guide"

useless!! Don't buy it!!!
