A Book of One's Own : Developing Literacy Through Making Books
Published in Paperback by Heinemann (July, 1998)

Lots of show, little substance
I found this book to have lots of great ideas for folding paper and putting together some cute books. But what I found lacking in the book was any real substance regarding the content of the children's books. The emphasis was clearly on the appearance of the projects, and the author had little to nothing to offer as far as how the books affected the writing level of the children, except for quantity. Quality was overlooked. I found a later book by this author much more informative. This was Literacy and the Book Arts. I bought A Book of One's Own to fill in the gaps about making some of the children's books he referred to in his later book.

Hooked on Books! (book arts to develop literacy)
This book is the first of Paul Johnson's 2 books on developing writing skills in elementary school kids through book arts. The book is useful in two important ways. First, it contains a good number of easy to follow instructions for a wide range of relatively simple paper folding and paper engineering bookmaking strategies. Someone with little experience in book arts can easily make these books. For that practical aspect alone, this book is an excellent resource.

But the second reason is perhaps more important. Johnson makes persuasive arguements for integrating the act of writing with the making of books. The book structures provide creative points of departure that tap into visual and spatial modes of learning. Johnson gives sound reasons to employ such strategies in "publishing centers" found in many elementary classrooms. He gives many practical tips about what one can expect from various age-groups of kids and the degree of facilitation required by the adults in charge.

For a day to day reference and useful tool for unit and larger curriculum planning this is a gem. Johnson's second book, Literacy Through the Book Arts expands the theory dimension of A Book of One's Own. For teachers who truely want to pursue integrated curriculum strategies I highly recommend both of Johnson's books.

I have used Johnson's book to explore possibilities for both my kids' book-making projects (and facilitating projects in their elementary school classrooms) and those of my college students (I teach printmaking and book arts at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill)

Read Johnson's books and you'll be hooked!

A wonderful book about the advantages of a simple life
Boundary Waters: The Grace of the Wild is a true to life essay of being in a great wilderness area. I have recently been in the Boundary Waters. My experiences along with Gruchow's seem to coincide. This book is a must for any traveler to the Boundary Waters. For those that have not, it's a great way to leave the "rat race" of everyday life and discover an enchanting wilderness. Boundary Waters: The Grace of the Wild will help you to stop and discover what your true priorities really are. Gruchow will help you reach your full potential in every thing you do and find your personal meaning of life. Or for just an hour at a time. I recommend this book to whom ever can read! You will enjoy it. I know I did!

A mirror for the BWCWA
Whether you're an old voyager with a canoe paddle as worn as a river rock or someone who's just curious about the Boundary Waters of Minnesota, Gruchow's book will speak to you. The book is well-crafted, and each word must have been hand selected, but the stories still have the feel of a campfire yarn told softly over dying embers. Like the Boundary Waters, and nature itself, this book is at times profound, often educational, frequently beautiful, personally revealing, surprisingly hilarious, and always captivating. The Boundary Waters don't disappint, and neither does Gruchow.

educational, alarming, inspiring
When I first saw the title of this book I was a little skeptical. I am a marathon runner and I saw it and said 'who can write a whole book on the subject of breathing? It can't be that hard!' Then I read thru a little of it and learned so much of how our breathing effects our life. It's not going to be easy to implement the exercises but I'm excited about applying them and regaining some youthful appearance as well as more general stamina in my running and work life, as well as my spiritual and intellectual life. What this book says makes a lot of sense.

Bragg on Breathing
Bragg's simple breathing exercises will rejuvenate you physically, mentally and even spiritually. This book takes you from the reasons good breathing is necessary to good health through to super power breathing exercises.

Do not be confused by the low price on this book. Health Science prints in such large quantities, they can afford to keep their prices low. This is a very popular book. Sixteenth printing, now enlarged and revised.

Paul Bragg started the health food movement over eighty years ago. His Daughter, the Amazing Patricia Bragg, is accelerating their tradition of promoting the healthy lifestyle. She publishes a number of health-nutrition books and markets her own brand of apple cider vinegar, olive oil and aminos. See her picture on the bottles.

I have known Health Science and Patricia Bragg and have followed her healthy lifestyle program for over 20 years.

As the author of 113 books (including revisions and foreign-language editions) and over 500 magazine articles, I highly recommend Health Science books to anyone not tired of living. DanPoynter@ParaPublishing.com.

Good Review, but Needs a Few More Pieces of Information
In this Cliff's Notes booklet, the reviewer, Warren Paul of Columbia University, provides the following (in order): a brief biography of Aldous Huxley, a 6-page history of utopian/dystopian novels, 1-and-a-half pages containing the general plot, one or two lines describing each of the characters, a detailed description of each chapter (each with a few paragraphs of commentary), a critical analysis of the novel as a whole and of the characters, definitions of the terms (e.g., Malthusian Belt, Musical Bridge) used in Brave New World, a chapter-by-chapter summary of Brave New World Revisited, review questions for the student, and a "Selected Biblography." All in all, this Cliff Notes succeeds in providing the details the student of Aldous Huxley needs to do a book report on either of the two books for which it provides commentary. It also serves to stimulate interest in utopian and dystopian novels. The review would have been better if there had been more assessment of how Brave New World Revisited was received by the public compared with the reception of its predecessor, and of the very different treatment of the new world in the two texts (a novel in the first case, and an extended essay in the second). I also would have appreciated a list of all of Aldous Huxley's novels and other literary works in chronological order to help me put Brave New World and Brave New World Revisited in their proper perspective with regard to the author's literary career. Lastly, the Selected Bibliography consisted of only four texts, many of which were old when this Cliff Notes booklet was written. I would have expected at least 20.

A very usefull helper
This cliff notes helped understand this book.(I am a high school senior). And I would tell anyone who has read this book, if they need help to pick this book up.

Kwok and Chinese-Canadian Soccer
Breakaway is a very complete book, which talks about many different aspects of life. It makes one think about how easy a life we lead. There is enough description so that one is interested but not so much so that one is bored. This book by Paul Yee, intertwines many hard to understand scenarios that American kids of the 21st century cannot always relate to. For a Chinatown boy living in Vancouver during the Depression, life can be rough; Kwok and his family live on a farm where he works all the time. Although his father thinks soccer is a waste of time, it is the only thing Kwok seems to really enjoy and excel at. Yee puts Kwok through a life one could almost call torture. Because of his race, he isn't allowed on a soccer team and people think they can take advantage of him just because he has chines blood. Breakaway brings you into a different world, Kwok's world, where uncertainty is your neighbor and soccer is your life. Kwok has to be always watching out for himself, never really knowing what is going to happen next; for all he knows his mother might run away and never return again. For example Kwok is sitting calmly in the soccer clubs hangout and a bunch of racists throw a large trunk through the window. It really shows a different perspective on life. Another reason I would recommend this book is because it has to do with soccer. Soccer is a very important part of my life, and the Chinese play very sophisticated style of soccer. If you are interested in soccer and different techniques this book will show you how the Chinese soccer players think before, during and after the game. This book is a fun read because it has a whole new side of life to anything from sports to racism. If you are the kind of person who does not like insecurity in a book or does not like offensive actions toward other cultures, this book might not be for you. The tension between Kwok and his father is a good part because it adds a lot to the plot. The offensive action toward the Chinese just shows you how life was for the Chinese and most any other peoples that are not indigenous to Vancouver. Without all of these things the book would have no meaning and Kwok would have a pleasant and boring life, which nobody want to read about.

The Real Deal
The book Breakaway, by Paul Yee, is a exciting, breathtaking book. Yee includes many detailed descriptions of the characters and many visual images. This book takes place during the 1930's in Vancouver, Canada, and is about a Chinese-Canadian boy named Kwok-Ken, who is a talented soccer player. Kwok lives just outside of Chinatown on a farm with his sister Ying, his mother, and his father. This story is about his encounters with prejudice people and how he overcomes them. In one encounter he goes to get on his soccer team's bus and he is kicked off because he is Chinese. Can he overcome this encounter? Find out by reading this enticing book.
One reason I would recommend this book is that once you get into this book you can't stop reading. This is because in almost every chapter there is a cliff-hanger ending that makes you want to find out what happens and you read more. For instance another farmer wishes he had a son that would inherit the land and that maybe Kwok would take it but Kwok doesn't even want his own family's land. Kwok doesn't say that until the next chapter. So then you read on to find out what Kwok says. Another reason why I would recommend this book is that it really shows what the real world is like and what it is like to deal with prejudice. For instance Kwok was born in Canada but his ancestry comes from China so he looks Chinese. People judged him by his looks and not by who he really is. As the old metaphor goes "don't judge a book by its cover." This really hurts Kwok but can he get over the prejudice?
One reason why someone might disagree with my opinion of this book is that Yee describes blood and gore whenever there is a chance. For instance Kwok and a boy in his class get into a fight. Kwok gets punched and starts bleeding unstoppably. However, this is not a good enough reason not to read the book because there are very few parts that deal with gore. Once again I highly recommend this book because it really shows the real world.

A New Way to Life
I read this book whilst travelling across Europe by train (23hrs). Reading the book prompted me to indulge in people watching as time went by, it was quite apparent that we are what we eat and no matter how much our current eating habits suit our life-style, they are not necessarily compatible with our bodies.

The message in the book to return our diet to a more balanced and less refined basis is well described in the title "Breaking the food chain". Obesity and poor diet through excess appear to be the scurge of the industrisized nations. The book simply sets out a framework to allow you to move to a healthier diet and change your taste for food for ever.

must read
I found this book fascinating. It was homespun and easy to read, but filled with scientific fact that supported the authors contentions. This book gave a simple practical way to have a healthy diet based on traditional foods. Mr. Chou explained why this type of diet is healthier both from a historic view and a modern view. So much of what is "traditional" turns out to be the best, because it has withstood the test of time. Mr. Chou in an interesting narrative style explains some of the modern scientific basis for this.

Breathturn (Sun & Moon Classics, 74)
Published in Paperback by Sun & Moon Press (July, 1995)
Authors: Paul Celan and Pierre Joris
Amazon base price: $12.95
Used price: $11.11
Average review score:

"Breath, that means direction and fate..."
Celan himself described the meaning of the word "breath" that way. And so, the title "Breathturn" indicates clearly what these poems are about: a change, a turning point in Celan's life. When he wrote them in between 1965 and 1967, his mental suffering was already so strong that he went to a psychiatry for half a year.

In spite of that, "Breathturn" might be the most convincing of all of Celan's poetry. At this point, he had completely given up the language of his early poetry that had made him famous - full of images, colours, dark metaphorics - and turned to the "grey language". It is very elusive, and I think I will have to read his later poems very, very often until I get a feeling for them because they are beyond all conventional poetry and can't be interpretated like they use to do it at school. The poems of "Breathturn" are rather short, few lines, few words in them. "Growing dumb" is a central word in this book. Celan did no more trust into language, and so he wanted to concentrate his thoughts and to tell things in a way they have never been told before or that have never been told before at all.

This excellent translation echoes the ice-pure German text.
Pierre Joris' translation of Paul Celan's _Breathturn_ captures the unique quality of this Jewish exile-poet's work more than any other attempt published to date. In this new English rendering, Celan's crystalline words float through the page with the same clarity and intense focus of mind as in the original texts. The blank page is always present as a timeless mirror reflecting the poet's soul--a mirror on which condenses the dark breath of speech, the alienated and alienating words to which the poet so desperately clings. These difficult, tense and multi-faceted poems are broken open here with a jewel-cutter's skilled grace. The expert translations hauntingly echo the parallel German, resonating so as to remind us that Celan's experience of the world belongs in every language. This scholarly translator has newly introduced a much-needed poet into the English language, and in so doing has enriched our experience of language, literature, and the exiled spirit.

A terrific guide to leading and managing others!
Most leadership books tell you how you should lead...without giving you the tools. This book is an exception. Meyer, Houze and Slechta tell you exactly what to do and when...without guesswork. Their concepts aren't theories...they've applied them in real-world situations and circumstances.

I suppose what impressed me most is the idea of a Servant's Heart - putting your team members and their well-being ahead of personal or organizational profit. If more American business leaders had a Servant's Heart, we wouldn't have to deal with apathy and indifference in the workplace. Bridging the Leadership Gap is an extraordinary book.

A great tool for college students ready begin a career.
As a college band director, we continually look for ways to improve the manner in which our student leaders approach their responsibilities. In looking for a guest speaker for our pre-season camp, this book was recommended as a great resource. We decided to purchase copies for all the student leaders. At the pre-season camp, we worked through some of the fundamental concepts in the beginning of the book and concluded with the five pillars of leadership. When our last session ended (10:00PM) some of the leaders said that they were going back to their rooms to work on goals for the remainder of the week. With guidance (a speaker) this is a great tool for college students ready to begin a career. After all, they are our future leaders and the tools gained from this book can make them more effective leaders and, for the companies in which they lead, can produce, as Mr.Meyer says, "a maximun multiplication of effort" from those that they lead. We highly recommed this book.

Good Technical view about electronic Commerce
The book is a really good view about secure servers and technology, but it lacks a business view about electronic commerce. In fact electronic commerce is more about business than technology but this book is a very good start. The discussion about electronic payment solutions is very good.

Brilliant Text Book covering Electronic Commerce !!!
I bought this particular book because I needed information on electronic commerce and indeed it did cover all relevant topics on electronic commerce and much much more
