Eye for detail
The Eye - Principles and Applications, was found to be an essential tool. Forrester aims (and succeeds) to inform in detail everything a first year university student needs to know about the eye. This is the beauty of the book: It doesn't skim over anything. When you're looking for a book to give more than a general overview, but don't need the complexity a post-graduate may, a book such as this is perfect. The only valid criticism may be that the included diagrams were erratic: some were perfectly presented, but others, whilst correct, were sometimes confusing, especially for students. Overall, a useful book for research and reference.

MORE GOOD WORK FROM ANNA FRANKLIN
This lovely little book is full of much information on fairy realms, fairy food, protection against fairies, fairy plants & animals, fairy loves & abductions, fairy days & festivals, and much more. It is written in the competant yet down-to-earth style that Ms. Franklin is known for. This is one of Capall Baans few books that doesn't contain a lot of typos, which is also a plus! But I think one of the most charming things about this book is the lovely illustrations; they're all in black & white, but they are still wonderful. Most are old Victorian prints & motifs that really lend even more magic to this already magical subject.

Like most books from this publisher, the price is a bit steep for a paperback. For this price, I would have liked to have seen some color plates. But, I don't mind paying a bit more for Anna Franklin's work. I recommend this book to faery/fairy lovers everywhere!

Understanding 'Credo ut Intelligam'
Paul Helm's work, Faith & Understanding, is a study of the 'faith-seeking-understanding' program. The book is broken into two parts. The first part begins by exploring various views of what faith is and how it has been thought to relate to reason; also, how should such a program relate to natural theology? Such views that are taken into consideration are Augustine, Anselm, one interpretation of Aquinas, and more contemporary thinkers as Norman Kretzmann, Dewey Hoitenga, and D.Z. Phillips.

The second part of the book is a five-case study of how the faith-seeking-understanding program has been put into action. The five cases regard Augustine's view of time, Anselm's ontological argument and his explanation of the atonement of Christ, Jonathan Edwards' response to the 'great objection' (regarding original sin), and lastly, Plantinga's explanation of the sensus divinitatis as it relates to externalism and rationality.

Overall, I think Helm has done a great job explaining the various views. He is fairly clear and detailed. The only reason that I did not give his book a five star rating is due to the number of grammatical errors in the book; there are far too many. Otherwise, I really liked this book and recommend it or understanding this rich Augustinian tradition.

Interesting overlooked work of SF
This is the fourth and central work of a series about the spiritual and technological rebirth of a future North America wrecked by nuclear war. Overtly the setting is straight after-the-bomb, but the construction of societies which each have their own strengths and weaknesses is nice, and the overall flow of the stories is well done.
This novel is the best of the series. Williams is a poor creator of setting and character, but the novel moves so gracefully through the plot that many readers will forgive him his failings. The title resonates over and over through events as symmatrical as the huge stone cities of the Pelbar, the one human society in central North America to have continued as an urban civilization.
As a literary engine, this is one of the finest fantastic stories I have ever read. Worth a try. If you like it, try the others.

Unexpectedly good read!
This is a great book! I actually have Professor Boyer for a history class and find him as facinating as the books he writes. It is always wonderful to see current affairs from the eyes of history. What a refreshingly great take on an over-analyzed subject.

Not Levine's best- but his average is better than most!
Paul Levine kicks butt. He's just plain a great author, and his characters and places stick in your mind.

This particular story isn't one of his best, but it's certainly a dang good read nonetheless. I strongly urge any fan of detective/lawyer/murder stories to run out and buy a couple of Levine's books, because not only will you enjoy the stories, and the hero, but you'll also find yourself laughing out loud from time to time.

And that's what books are supposed to do (in my opinion, anyway)- entertain you!

Families of Faith
Martinson provides some very interesting and insightful overviews of Buddhism and Hinduism (the Indic family, which focuses on self), Confucianism and Daoism (the Sinic family, which focuses on world), and Islam and Judaism (the Semitic family, which focuses on God). His emphasis is on the very distinctive goals and approaches of each of these groups. In the Christian approach to these religions both evangelism and dialogue are appropriate. No revelation of God is a substitute for God's saving act in Christ, but saving faith is possible as a response to lesser revelations of God

This book is interesting both for its insights into the other religions and for its exposition of a form of the "anonymous Christians" approach.

From 'Star Trek' to 'The Outer Limits' and 'One Step Beyond'
Though something of a relic and an antique from my days as a television-loving teenager, this book has proven indispensable to me. Originally written and published in 1977, to my knowledge it has never been revised, updated or reprinted. I have owned my copy of 'Fantastic Television' since 1983, purchasing it off the out-of-print bookshelf at a bookseller here in the Twin Cities. The copy I had read and referred to thousands of times as a teenager belonged to my brother who received it as a birthday gift. Coveting it fiercely I finally came across a copy years later and snagged it immediately. To be honest the book isn't really among the best of its type available and that is largely due to it's age. It does however hold a special interest to those of us who were hooked on science fiction or horror TV programming while coming of age during the 70's.

Included in the first part of the book is an introduction to and brief history of such long forgotten but classic shows like John Newland's 'One Step Beyond' and the Boris Karloff hosted 'Thriller', both rarely seen today; other more popularly known programs like 'Batman' and 'Superman', 'Star Trek' and 'The Invaders', 'The Twilight Zone' and 'The Outer Limits' can be found here as well. Cult TV classics like Patrick McGoohan's 'The Prisoner' and Darren McGavin's 'Kolchak: The Night Stalker' are also here. In all there are 16 separate television shows covered within which includes the classic Irwin Allen shows. Each episode of the series is listed with a short one or two sentence descriptive plot summary. The second part of the book has a paragraph length synopsis of many other shows which space did not allow the authors to list each episode of.

Does anyone remember either of the excellent TV movies 'Gargoyles' or 'The Questor Tapes'? They're Here! Because also included is a decent collection of classic sci-fi and horror oriented made-for-television movies with a very concise and compact description of each. A special section of the book deals with Saturday morning fantasy classics - both live action and animated, and a short section on British fantasy television including some real rarities.

Also containing many photographs and even some rare stills, the book is a real curio and definitely a collectible for any avid TV fan. There are bigger and better (and up-to-date) books available on the subject but don't overlook this gem. The authors genuinely love their subject and really awaken the fanatic in you; it is virtually impossible to put down once you pick it up.

A great introduction to business principles.
This book provides a great introduciton to the key elements of business. After reading it, my business vocabulary was greatly increased. I found this book a better read than "The Portable MBA." "Fast Forward," with less reading, seems to cover more (e.g., economic value added).

Fun times with Poetry
Last year one of my students' parents gave me this book. We were studying poetry then and she thought it would be a helpful tool for my classroom. WEll she could not have been more right. Each year when poetry time rolls around I grab this book and search for new and fun ways to write poetry. Try the I Made a Mistake poem. Your kids will love it. Mine do. I recommend this book to any teacher or lover of poetry.
