OKU Arthroplasty-essential to the orthopaedic resident
It is well understood that the OKU series is an excellent resource for those training in orthopaedic surgery at any level. OKU Hip and Knee Reconstruction 2 upholds this tradition splendindly. In the usual thourough fasion, this essential text gives an excellent review of the most current literature covering all of the topics of joint reconstructive surgery. Furthermore, OKU continues the tradition of supplying the reader with a classic bibliography which is priceless and saves hours of medline searching through less relevant papers before finding a well developed study. Surgical indications and techniques are well described, and the most current controvesial topics covered. Every orhtopaedic resident in the United States should have this text.

critical praise
From Library Journal
In a small Missouri town along the Mississippi, Tom Gully, a barrel maker, orders his son Otis to kill (dam) the river. Otis sets out and falls in with a fanatic religious group that promises to help if he will go to New York and bring back ``Our Lady,'' who may or may not be a captive. Otis plans to pose as a photographer, and off he goes with camera to the big city. His adventures are wild, surrealistic, and often very funny. He participates in a bombing, a riot, and a fountain of youth scam. Eventually, Otis builds a boat of barrels to return to Missouri. The characters, sex, and coincidences are appropriately zany, and the writing is smooth. This offbeat first novel is not for everyone, but some readers will love it. For large popular collections.-- Robert H. Donahugh, formerly with Youngstown & Mahoning Cty. P.L., Ohio

From Publisher's Weekly - Publishers Weekly
This unusual and charming first novel is a tall tale, recounting the adventures of Otis Gully, a naive lad who vows to ``plug up'' the Mississippi River because it is ruining his father's rain-barrel business in Braggadocio, Mo. He falls in with the Holy Habitat, a bunch of religious fanatics who convince him that he needs their help to complete his mission and, in order to win it, must go to wicked New York and find their lost goddess. Within seconds of arriving in the big city, Gully's coat is stolen (the thief is subsequently murdered by villains seeking Otis) and, under the impression he's hailing a taxi, he stumbles into a vehicle owned by Ciro Bellafiga's Therapeutic Driving University--which leads to a weekend of wild sex with student-driver Mary. After that, things get really strange. Posing as a news cameraman, Otis nearly gets killed by a bomb accidentally detonated by the AntiNice cult. His distraught father, believing him dead, comes to New York and winds up sitting on a traffic island in a barrel full of dimes. All paths eventually lead to a woman named Hank, whose sneeze can restore lost youth to those hit by its spray. Impossible to summarize or explain, this first novel is Some Tale Indeed. (Apr.)

A Book that Should Be Required Reading in Every High School
We fail to appreciate the fact that men and women of great wealth and means voluntarily gave their, "Lives, Fortunes and Sacred Honor" in order to estabish a country for the benefit of free people. This nobel cause created the most powerful and wealthy nation on earth that was born under God and the rule of law. In our modern day as we compromise law for the rule of man, we must ask ourselves, isn't this what our forefathers gave their lives for; that we tear away from the rule of man, coruption and politics of the ruling classes so that the people in this country can be free. Free to speak, free to associate, free to keep the fruits of their labors? This book should be required reading in every high school in America as a balance to the radical agenda that is in pursuit of the utopian dream. It is truly an inspired work.

absolutely delightful
This delightful story about a little girl's adventure with her mom and dad picking raspberries and making jam is a "must have" for all elementary school libraries and homes with young children. Like many children's books, the illustrations are what makes this cute story come to life. My pre-schoolers who can't yet read love looking through page after page of colorful, creative illustrations. Please take the time to notice the painstaking details illustrator Paul Michalak has inserted on every page. This is talent you rarely find in children's books these days. Looking forward to more stories by the Marx-Michalak duo.

A Book of Memories
This book absolutely overflows with memories for anyone who has grown up attending the Iowa State Fair. The pictures that date back from the very first fair to the most recent years show just how the Iowa State Fair has become a pasttime for so many families and groups of people. It's a very heartwarming book for an Iowan to have in their home. Growing up, the Iowa State Fair was my family vacation destination each year, and continues to be. The pictures in the book and stories enrich my many memories and also have enlightened me of the history of the Iowa State Fair as it has grown over the years and turned into an absolute two-week hysteria for all visitors. This book is just wonderful.

Unplayable Lies
Of all the books I have read on golf this one stands out. Joseph T Shaw captures the obsessive dimension of golf brilliantly, relegating 'instruction' to a secondary position. The narrative takes us to Scotland, to windswept coastal links, a crusty old professional and, of course, a lovely young woman who can hit it a mile with barely a movement of her lithe body. The jokes are well done and the description of an infamous golf match in Musselburgh is brilliant. Amidst all the human drama reside several classic pieces of golf instruction, beautifully written and guaranteed to inspire. This is a book for the ages, an important historical record and a first rate piece of instruction on how to swing a golf club. If you are obsessed with golf, this book has been written for you.

Over the Rainbow: The Wizard of Oz As a Secular Myth of America (McGill Studies in the History of Religions)
Published in Hardcover by State Univ of New York Pr (January, 1992)
Author: Paul Nathanson
Amazon base price: $24.50

Still Ahead Of Its Time
Although OVER THE RAINBOW first appeared in print almost a decade ago, it continues to have no equal in the interdisciplinary study of religion, film, and popular culture. Nathanson's subtitle is THE WIZARD OF OZ AS A SECULAR MYTH OF AMERICA. He takes great care to define terms such as "secular" and "myth," as well as that elusive but crucial word "religion." Thus the reader is engaged in a stimulating conversation with theorists like Gregor Goethals, John Wiley Nelson, Clifford Geertz, Victor Turner, Robert Bellah, Roland Barthes, Elaide, John Dominic Crossan and many others around a familiar -- but via Nathanson, always surprising -- common text, the 1939 film THE WIZARD OF OZ.

While Nathanson himself is a great admirer of the film, the importance of this study goes far beyond that particular production; it sets a standard of scholarship that is unrivaled in the field.

I have used this book in undergraduate religion and popular culture courses at two colleges in the northeast and also at the University of Alabama. It has been exceedingly helpful in introducing students to the religious character that lurks just below the surface of secular American culture -- what some scholars have called the "implicit" religiosity of popular culture. The book has opened students' eyes to religion in places they least expected to find it (indeed, some students even expect to encounter the Devil in productions that emanate from Hollywood). But it has also introduced them to perennial religious themes and enduring problems in the study of religion, thereby demonstrating to them that the academic study of religion is not only fascinating, it is also fun.

I have not met a child yet who has not loved this book!
A hungry mosquito starts a food chain in a steamy swamp as each hungry animal both preys and is preyed upon. This is a very cute and funny book that can be used to introduce young students to the concept of food chains or swamps. The characters are funny and colorful. The facial expressions are priceless. This book is great for teaching letter sounds and beats, due to the repetition. It is great for Bag-a-Book lessons and Reader's Theatre. I have already worn out one copy from using it so much. Enjoy!
