The Roots of Prosocial Behavior in Children
Published in Hardcover by Cambridge University Press (September, 1989)
Authors: Nancy Eisenberg and Paul Henry Mussen
Amazon base price: $44.95
Average review score:

Well documented research to consider in pro-child policies
Eisenberg and Mussen's book is a refreshing look at what can go right with child development. The research and the ideas give professionals (teachers, mental health, social change advocates) and parents clear ideas about how to approach developing and encouraging prosocial, caring, sharing and empathic children. If many people, including politicians, seriously looked at the literature it would be much clearer about how to train and restructure institutions, schools, childcare centers and address world issues, and possibly what kind of refugee camps and IDP camps to fund and support. The uses of this kind of book could be profound or just shelved and forgotten.

Susan Paul does romance!!!
"Take a pinch of south Georgia wealth, a dash of sparks and spice, and a handful of real life adventure, add a bit of sparks and spice, toss in some unexpected suspense, and a large helping of happy endings, and you have the recipe for a sexy, modern romance. After her divorce, Maggie McCandles' only desire is to find solace in her work. She isn't prepared to fall in love with Jackson Grimes, a handwsome, arrogant foreman whose job it is to oversee a joint businees venture. But he is not what he appears to be. Whe Maggie finds out that he is actually the intense and wealthy owner of Whispering Pines Plantation, the sparks fly. Their troubles have only just begun . . . You'll like ROSES IN DECEMBER. It's non-stop reading and Ms. Paul lights a fuse of sexual tension on the first page that burns at top speed to an explosive surprise ending."

The best guide to Malta
Having lived in Malta for about five months, I can vouch for the quality of this book. It definitely beats all the other guides out there.

The author had the advantage of writing about a small country, which might explain why this book is so good. Alas, smallness is often next to greatness, as anybody who knows anything about Malta will tell you. Situated smack dab in the middle of the Mediterranean, it has been a cultural crossroads for thousands of years, from the time of the Phoenecians right down to British colonial days (Malta became an independent country only in 1964 and the British influence is still strong). Its famous siege by the Turks in 1565 was only a part of its rich and exciting history. This book includes a thorough section on Maltese history and culture, plus a list of other books if you want to learn more.

As for the travel sections, it's replete with useful information, including details about admission costs, opening hours, bus routes, places to stay and eat, how to get there (not always easy), and where to go have fun in the sun. The maps are great, and it's also got a lot of useful information about Gozo and Comino, the beautiful neighboring islands 30 minutes by boat from Malta itself.

This book was written with budget travelers in mind, but anybody will find it useful. And don't be turned away by the title: the only thing "rough" about Malta is the bus network, which is absolutely prehistoric and will beat even the most hard-core travelers down to an ichthyous, jelly-like pulp. Watch out. --- Five stars.

Absolutely a "must have" book for every Elvis fan
This book is one of the most impressive Elvis books I have ever read. Over the years, like countless other Elvis fans, I have owned or read dozens of books about the King. So, by now, readers would think they have read most of what is known about him. Wrong. This book is loaded with stories and facts that I have not seen elsewhere. In fact, even Peter Guralnick's books (ie: "Last Train..". "Careless Love"), do not have some of the information that is contained in this book. For instance, I didn't know that Elvis and his father were going to testify in a FBI case involving them being scammed out of $950,000 (over the purchase of the Jetstar airplane Elvis bought). The author points out that this can be found in public FBI files. Yet no other book has every mentioned it. I could go on and on. There are highlighted pages devoted to Elvis concerning race, girls he was involved with, an untold story that occured when he was 16, etc. The chapters are broken up into segments: his life, his music, influences, people who influenced him, his essential albums, essential songs, etc. I strongly recommend this book. You will not be disappointed. It is among the top three books I have ever read on Elvis. Absolutely essential.

A True Hero!
Ex-cop Jake Cutter is just months away from his parole when he strikes a malicious prison guard. Now he's a man on the run in the middle of one of the worst forest fires in history. His only hope is to make it to Mexico because he knows he can't stand another six years in prison. But he doesn't count on meeting Regan Delaney in a lonely mountain cabin. And he can't just leave a defenseless woman in the middle of a forst fire. Somehow he has to get her to safety without jeopardizing his own freedom.

Regan Delaney just needed to regroup, get her personal life under control, after her husband left her for another woman. The last thing she expected to find in the lonely little cabin was a tall, exhausted firefighter but his presence soothed the panic that had been building inside her since she discovered that she'd been cut off from safety by the forest fire.

As they hike through the forest toward safety, these two characters begin a journey of trust and love. Neither of them have had easy lives and Jake's has been tougher than most. Ms. Riggs always writes powerful characters who have to surmount incredible odds before they can find love. A wonderful story!

Rubens

From a master art historian
Kerry Downes was one of my professors at Reading University and was one of the most highly regarded art historians in the world. Although most of his work was specific to British architecture (Hawksmoor, Vanbrugh, Wren) he had a deep affection for the work of Rubens. The result was this highly accessible and deeply scholarly book on the Flemish master. Solidly informative this book is an absolute must for any art historian, or anyone with an interest in Baroque art.

A Wonderful Introduction
I read this book for an upper-level college art history class and loved every page. I was actually sad that I finished the book! Few art history books combine the stunning visual images and masterful prose that this one does. A very interesting and informative book that will introduce you to one of the most under-appreciated artists - the genius Peter Paul Rubens.
