thorough coverage of mammoths for young and old
This is a wondeful book on all things mammoth. With both a fact-filled and readable text and a wealth of excellent illustrations, it is a great resource for young and old. Though the main star of the book is the famous woolly mammoth, other mammoths are covered, such as the dwarf mammoths of Wrangel Island, the California Channel Islands, and of Malta and Sicily; the Columbian Mammoth; the Steppe Mammoth; and the ancestral mammoth, Mammuthus meridionalis.

All aspects of mammoths are covered, anything you could ever want to know about them (that is known to scientists I should say). Mammoth evolution is covered, with discussions and illustrations showing the relationship between the various types of mammoths as well as mastodons and elephants. The entire Proboscidean family tree is detailed, tracing back the evolution of the group to trunk-less Moerithierum over 40 million years ago. The history of mammoth discoveries in Siberia is discussed with many great illustrations, showing many of the famous finds such as the Beresovka Mammoth and baby mammoth Dima, both well preserved frozen mammoths. The mammoths (Columbian Mammoths) that were trapped in the infamous La Brea tar pits of modern Los Angeles are reviewed, with an illustration of a typical scene at the tar pits and discussion of paleontology there. All aspects of mammoth natural history are delved into; what they ate, what preyed upon them, how they aged, the nature of their hairy covering, what habitats they favored, along with detailed discussions of mammoth anatomy and physiology, even analysis of mammoth molars and how they chewed and electron microscope images of mammoth blood cells. Mammoths and human culture is well covered, with ample illustrations of cave paintings and carvings of mammoths, early man hunting and eating mammoths, mammoth bone tools, even mammoth bone huts! The final section of the book is devoted to mammoth extinction and the various causes, primarily climatic and human hunting. Also included are a useful glossary, an appendix discussing how what is known about mammoths came to light, several maps detailing mammoth finds around the world, and a bibliography.

Great popular science writing and lavishly illustrated, this all one could ever want on mammoths.

Wonderful book! Excellent information and great pictures!
I have studied Mammoths for a long time now and this book was the best source of information I have seen in a long time. It is soo good I built a web site dedicated to the book and it's authors. Check it out at http://www.angelfire.com/tn/mamoths/index.html

Excellent, informative, and fun.
This book captivated both me and my 12-year-old. It has a million years of mammoth history. The photos of fossil bones and frozen preserved mammoths are excellent. I had not realized mammoth fossils were so common, and that they existed throughout the U.S. If all you know about are the frozen wooly mammoths of Siberia, then you must read this book to get the whole story. The book clearly covers the different types of mammoths, including the dwarf mammoths that survived until only 4000 years ago! Now I want to know where I can find info on what's been learned since this book was published in 1994.

Entertaining to read, creative recipes to impress
An excellent cookbook that's fun to read, too! Chef Paul lets you peak inside his world, giving you insight to his creativity through the origins of some of his favorite recipes. The stories about some of his creations are really funny. The recipes are easy to follow, and the dishes are amazing. Great way to impress your dinner guests! There's even a Key West section including the best Key Lime Pie recipe I've ever tried. (The secret is in the sauce!) The spiral-bound top and cardboard bottom let the book stand up so the recipe is easy to follow as you cook. Excellent Key West souvenier--who wants another t-shirt?! Overall, a charming collection of stories, original pen-and-ink sketches by the restaurant owner, and inspiring recipes for delicious dishes that look impressive, yet are easy to prepare.

Excellent!
I have looked at different introductory theory books, and this one was by far the best - clear explanations, very good exercises, good layout.

Master Theory
WOW! VERY VERY VERY effective! I'm a Sophomore in High School, and I learned all of what I know in music theory in 6th grade, due to this series. Very awesome set of books, and is easy enough for a child to understand. I would recommend this to ALL music teachers, (chorus, band, piano, orchestra). It will help your students!! There are 6 books in the set.

Excellent book for teaching Music theory. Children & adult
I can recommend this to music educators public and private and even Homeschoolers. The lessons are straightforward and thorough. Highly recommend! I'm starting my almost 5 year old on it and he is picking it all up nicely.

Master Yunmen. That old windbag!
My teacher is a monk of the Yunmen Order, so naturally I was to get and read this book. Interesting guy really, probably the most influential Ch'an Master in my Ch'an practice but like I said before I am a little inclined.

Really folks, if you are looking for a good book on Zen, go get something by D.T. Suzuki, but if you want breakthrough your delusions, read Yunmen! He's an old windbag but he'll do the trick.

Amitofo.

Yunmen, that old windbag!
My teacher is a monk of the Yunmen order, so naturally I was inclined to buy this book. The first time I read it, I kind of just went through it. I have read it again and now, he's an old windbag! If you are interested in studying true Zen, get a book by Suzuki but if you want to know Ultimate Reality, study the teachings of Master Yunmen. Perhaps you'll learn a wee bit of something!

"What is the sword of Yunmen?" "Its drawn!" "How about the who is using it?" The Master said: "Su-lu, su-lu!" (Case 82)

A fine overview of an ancient sage
As part of her effort to document Master Yunmen and his surviving teachings, Ms. App travelled to the site of his ancient monastery in China. She performed "first-hand" analysis of the teachings, many of which are literally etched in stone there. I found her introduction and background to the teachings to be more interesting than the teachings themselves. The teachings are what one expects from the writing of ancient Chan/Zen masters - they don't "make a lot of sense" when approached from our normal way of thinking about things.

Different author
The author to that book is Collins, Vincent Paul; not Vincent Paul, Collins. This man was a priest in my town and I knew him personally. The book is still being asked for by many people around here and is still being touted as very insightful and helpful for people who have low self-esteem.

Out of Print but Worth Finding!
This wonderful self-help guide I stumbled upon years ago and have read numerous times. My copy is highlighted, with pages falling out, but never the less... one of my all time favorites. It's easy to read style, with short sections of only a page or two are wonderful for when you are feeling a little down, troubled, frustrated or angry. It is at those times when reading something uplifting is most beneficial, but your concentration for "heavy" reading is almost non-existant. That is when this book is so ideal.

The book is divided into three parts, Part 1, "Me Vs. Myself", deals with how to live with yourself... how to be happy, how to not let things bug you, etc. It is wonderful... and has helped me out of many bad mind-sets. The book states that there are only three major obstacles to happy living... injurious feelings, overreaction to others and your confusion as to your place in the scheme of things. This section then goes on to explain in simple terms, how to overcome those obstacles.

Part 2, "Me Vs. You", is basically about not letting the actions of others bother you. Here we are reminded that it is not the person who has to put up with unreasonable behavior who has the problem, it's the person who is behaving unreasonably who actually has the problem.

Part 3, "Me, Myself and God", is about our relationship with God or a higher power, and reminds us that help is available instantly, at all hours of the day and night through him.

This book embodies the "Live and Let Live" philosophy of life. The author, Vincent P. Collins, has done a wonderful job of cutting right to the heart of injurious emotional issues and presents them in a way that even the most depressed individual cannot help but relate to and embrace. In today's stressful society, almost everyone suffers from some form of depression, frustration, anger, guilt or worry. With that in mind...this book should be required reading!

Best Useable Self Help Book I've Ever Read
This book provides the best outline I have ever read, short of the Sermon on the Mount and the book Aloholics Anonymous, to put life in perspective, first to Self, then to Others, and finally with God. I read this book at least once a year and have attended group sessions wherein we go through the book, topic by topic, sharing our experience, hope and strength, one by one. I think that this book should be published by someone. (bluejean2@juno.com or jeanballow@yahoo.com)

Great gift for the aficionado
This is a good bible for the Midwinter enthusiast. My in-laws have been collecting the Stonehenge Midwinter patterns for years without a reference guide. They'll be thrilled as I was with the chronological history of this company and the pottery they created. Great color photos.

Excellent Identification Guide!
This book is a wonderful reference volume for the lover of mid 20th Century design, and invaluable for the Midwinter enthusiast! The colour photos are exceptional and the patterns are also explicitly described in chronological order. If you even have a passing interest in 50's-60's design, this would be a wonderful addition to your reference library.

buy 2 copies - one for reference and one for keeps.
If you are crazy about Midwinter pottery and want to know pretty much all there is to know about it's production processes, the designers and their designs then this is the book for you. If you are interested in the designs of the 1950s and 60's it will also provide a valuable reference tool. There are plenty of colour pictures to help with identification of different patterns whilst out at boot sales in search of treasure (Becoming increasingly rare to find at reasonable prices now). Read the book but leave the china for me.

The Monster Within': Overcoming Eating Disorder
I was worried about a friend of mine whom I believe has an eating disorder so I checked out this book. Not only did it help me to better understand her problem but made me realize some of the problems I'm having and gave me the courage to get help. This is a wonderful book.

Cynthia is truly a beautiful woman of God.
I was honored to special order this awesome book. Most of all I was honored to meet and spend five days with Cynthia during one of her workshops in July 1998 which was held in the Diamond Bar. Cythnia gave me hope and willingness to believe in myself. With my Lord Savior Jesus Christ and special people like Cynthia I have been able to over come my eating disorder. I am not saying that there are not rough days, but I find inspiration in the book Monster Within. I would highly recommend this book to anyone with an eating disorder or the family member of a eating disorder sufferer. Thank you again Cynthia for this precious and well appreciated book.

You are not alone, and help is out there for everyone
I am so thankful that Cynthia helped me out with my eating disorder. Not only did she support me in getting the help I needed. She took my kids into her home a complete stranger that I was, and gave them some precious memories which they talk about still occassionally. My kids have pictures of the McClures and there dog in their rooms. Cynthia gave me a chance that no one else would give me. She took me under her care and provided all tools that I needed to get into my issues and get on with my life. My family and I are now a real family. WE have learned to deal with the everyday struggles and allow God to take care of us thru our journey in life. Our kids are growing up to be fine young Christian kids and have stated many times the they thank Cynthia and David for giving their mom back to them. My husband and I have a marriage which centers around each other and God. This book opened a door for me to see that I was not alone and that all things are possible thru God and his children. This illness is a tough one to overcome alone. But with support like the McClures and her folks, and loving family members, "all things come together for those who LOVE The LORD". Rom. Thanks Cynthia, David McClure, Bob & Joy Roland for all you did for me. I am now a Chief Probation Officer in Ga. I have gotten my life together and continue to grow each day. I pray for Cynthia and her family and know that she is out helping others. Cassie A. Cole

Blood curdling stories that left you asking for more.
This book left you wanting to read more about Kentucky Ghosts. I always hear about the Bell Witch because she is only 30 miles away, but to hear true Kentucky Ghost stories just makes your skin crawl. I have even tried to locate the farm where the money is still buried. I believe there is a force out there, whether it be ghosts, goblins, or witches there is something out there. For those who do not believe in the supernatural just read this book and it will make you think twice.

Awesome Book!
I loved this book. This book contained stories that my Grandfather told me when I was a little girl. It was also cool that several of the stories took place in my home town of Hyden, Kentucky. I would recommend this book to anyone who lives in Kentucky or just likes ghost stories.

Bone chilling, and a good book.
When I first read this book I couldn;t believe that all of this had happend all in Kentucky. There was one story about a witches grave that intrested me so much that my boyfriend and I are looking for the exact cemetery that she was buried in, in Pulaski county Kentucky. I was a good book, and I think anyone who is interested in gohst stories and lives in Kentucky ought to buy this book! It was just so good.

Medieval Butterflies, Sea Shells, Plants = #41 Manuscripts
If you want to see colorful manuscipts that show a varity of medieval insects, plants, flowers, fruit, sea shells, initials, designs, and even a few animals, then this is the book for you. There are 41 full color manuscripts to choose from. At the end of the book, are discriptions of each manuscript, listing the medieval name for each. Example: The identifications of specimens proceed from top to bottom and from left to right. Common names have been provided whenever possible. In the case of the insect identifications, British English common names have been used, since most of the specimens represented do not exist in the United States. Where a different American common name is known, it has been included following the British Name, seperated by a slash. The names of higher taxonomic groups (families and orders) have been printed in roman type, while genus and spicies names appear in italics.Folio 1 Rotunda script in "trace letters"Vinca minor L,: Common periwinkleMalus domestica Borkh,:Common appleLacerta(?):LizardFolio 5 Antiqua scriptMatthiola incana (L.) A beautiful little book
"Nature Illuminated" is wonderful collection of illuminated manuscripts from the Getty's extensive holdings. Perusing these pages shows that the chasm between (representative) art and science is really not so great.

Good things come in small packages
For such a small book, this is crammed with new ideas for both calligraphy and drawing from Nature. You have to look close, and have an idea of how techniques can be applied, but this book will serve as an inspiration for my work for years to come!

superb, magnificent
this book could easily inspire a life of crime--how else to afford the gorgeous contemporary jewelry? or acquire the museum quality antique and archeological collections?

as a knitter, embroiderer and beader, i am always looking for inspiration for my pieces. i may stoop to outright plagarism when it comes to the works in this incredible book. though i will say that i can only dream of having the level of skill the pieces display. the craftmanship, the artistry, are humbling when one considers the tools the artists had--and the reservation conditions under which too much of the art was created.

the text is wonderfully informative, if you can force yourself to read it, instead of allowing yourself to be mesmerized by the photos.

follow the advice of the professional review--buy this book immediately.

An excellent book!
This is by far the very best book I have ever seen on the subject! It will no doubt take days to just look at the beautiful pictures. The author, Lois Sherr Dubin, has outdone her previous book, "The History Of Beads", which I also highly recommend. This book follows thousands of years of Native adornment, dividing the continent into sections such as the Arctic, the Plains, the Southwest, and more, and goes into the jewelry, symbolism, and purpose of these exquisite artworks in great detail. I had never seen most of the photographs in this book before, and the text is most informative as well. I simply cannot say enough good things about this book, and I'd give it ten stars if I could! The author has obviously put much thought, time, and careful research into this wonderful book!

A Visual Dictionary of Native American Regalia and Artifacts
I'm wearing out the copy of North American Indian Jewelry and Adornment by Lois Sherr Dubinat at the local book store as I save towards its purchase. It is the most conclusive, informative, visually stimulating referance resource on Native American Jewelry, Regalia, Artifacts and more, separated by regions and tribes. The photos and graphics are extremely detailed and the text is very well researched. Can hardly wait till its mine to study for hours at a time.
